Vampire hunters find new Castlevania at TGS

According to Japanese website ITmedia (translation here), at TGS Konami is showing off a 10 second trailer for a brand new Castlevania title slated to hit current gen consoles (namely Xbox 360 and PS3). Gleaning what we can from the translation, the game deals with a betrayed family, a father, and a curse. Oh, and it apparently stars an effeminate man with a big, burning red sword. That, and he looks an awful lot like Alucard, Dracula's son and a recurring character in the series. Sounds like a cursed family to us.

And that's all we know. No gameplay details, no release date. Let's just hope it's good ... or evil, as the case may be.

GDC08: Bomberman & Pac-Man win big at XBLA Awards

Keeping to their word, Microsoft just announced at GDC the winners of the first annual Xbox Live Arcade Awards and man oh man did Bomberman Live and Pac-Man: Championship Edition win big.

Out of the ten award categories, six category winners were chosen by the Xbox Live community who voted online this past January. And after the votes were tallied, Bomberman Live ended up being the big winner taking home the coveted Best Overall Arcade Game of 2007 as well as Best Competitive Multiplayer Game. Pac-Man: CE also came out on top, nabbing Best Original Game, Best Family-Friendly Game and Xbox LIVE Arcade Staff Choice honors. So, between Bomberman and Pac-Man, they took home half of all the awards. Not too shabby. After the break, check out all of 2007's top XBLA Award winners for each of the ten categories. And be sure to begin preparation for 2008's XBLA Awards, we have a feeling that the competition is going to be fierce.

Next Castlevania could be 360 exclusive

Speaking to Game Informer, Castlevania creator Koji Igarashi took some time to discuss the next console version of the series. Of particular interest to our console of choice is that Igarashi states the Xbox 360 would make the "best platform" for the next console iteration of Castlevania. The reason, according to Igarashi, is that the U.S. market is the biggest market for the series and that the PS3 is doing as well in the U.S. What's interesting about the interview is that Igarashi makes it sound as though the Xbox 360 will be the only platform for the next Castlevania, more or less pinning the hopes of a PS3 version on the success of Metal Gear Solid 4.

When asked about whether the next console Castlevania would be 2D or 3D, Igarashi noted that he'd like to use an approach similar to the upcoming Dracula X Chronicles for PSP, which uses 3D models restricted to a 2D plane. Igarashi says that if the technique is accepted -- i.e. if Dracula X Chronicles sells well -- he'll consider doing the console version in a similar style. 2D Castlevania titles have typically fared better than the 3D outings, so here's hoping Dracula X Chronicles lives up to its pedigree. Either way, you can rest assured that we'll be playing the next version on Xbox 360.

Castlevania's XBLA future looking grim

At GDC earlier this year, we asked Castlevania creator Koji Igarashi if he would consider making an original Castlevania title for Xbox Live Arcade. He told us that he was interested, but didn't elaborate beyond that. We hope you haven't been keeping your hopes up, because Igarashi has more or less declared that an XBLA iteration isn't in the cards. When asked by 1UP if a new downloadable Castlevania title was in the works, Igarashi responded, "There are two reasons why I am reluctant to create a game for such channels: 1. The price is frankly too low for what we'd want to do, and 2. Most of the next gen players are expecting really high fidelity games, so I'm really not eager to go that route."

While an XBLA iteration seems doomed, Igarashi did note that preliminary planning for a new Castlevania title on consoles has begun. Unfortunately, there are no concrete details yet. We're just shooting from the hip here, but we'd bet good money it will feature vampires.

Dracula's castle crashes onto XBLA

Dracula's ethereal castle, Castlevania, has officially materialized on Xbox Live Arcade. Of course, we speak of the oft cited pinnacle of the Castlevania series, Symphony of the Night. The game will set you back 800 points and will cost you a few extra seconds than most XBLA games, thanks to its 90 MB size. There are also some other goodies available should you have any points left, including a 150 point theme and a 100 point picture pack. By the time you're done you might as well slap a Konami logo right onto your Xbox.

So, who's getting their Castlevania on?

Symphony of the Night whips XBLA next week

Wow. We never thought we'd say this, but Xbox Live Arcade is on a roll. Two weeks ago, we got Alien Hominid, last week was Worms, and TMNT dropped this week. That's three decent titles in a row. How in heaven could Microsoft keep this up? The answer is Symphony of the Night. Marked by many as the official game to whine about now that Worms is out, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night will arrive next Wednesday on Xbox Live Arcade. Most Castlevania fans agree that SOTN is the best in the series, so seeing it on Live Arcade is a real treat. The game provides many, many hours of action RPG gameplay and features either classic or "modernized" graphics and sound. Symphony of the Night will be available next Wednesday for 800 points.

Is Xbox Live Arcade finally coming into its own? Dare we dream?

GDC 07: Igarashi, "2D games will never die!"

Koji Igarashi, the producer of recent entries in the Castlevania series and assistant director of Symphony of the Night, gave a presentation on 2D games at GDC last week. Specifically, his presentation centered on the differences between developing 2D games and 3D games. Igarashi noted a few philosophical differences between 3D and 2D games, but also noted a few advantages that hadn't occurred to us. For instance, 2D games are easier to produce, faster to design, and faster to implement. Of course, all of this is generally cheaper than 3D production as well.

Absolutely Nothing coming to the XBLA this week [update 1]

Those funny dudes over at the Gamerscore Blog released a video announcing some really crappy news. They put together the video above to announce that Absolutely Nothing will be coming to the XBLA this week. And no, Absolutely Nothing is not a new arcade title you have yet to hear about. It literally means not a single arcade game is coming out tomorrow for your gaming pleasure. Alien Hominid, Castlevania, and Worms are all sitting in their Microsoft certification cages waiting to bust out for all the children to enjoy. So instead we get Absolutely Nothing. Oh well ... at least we get a creative video to announce the bad news. A nice consolation isn't it?

Update 1: Added Gamerscore Blog link love.

[Thanks, Ben H.]

Castlevania: SOTN possibly coming this month

Rumor has it that the March 2007 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly confirms the release of XBLA title Castlevania: Symphony of the Night sometime this month. Yup, Castlevania: SOTN within' the next few weeks. Though it is entirely possible that EGM confirmed the release date with Konami weeks ago, but since then could have been delayed. We don't see why the game couldn't be ready for a February release (we already know what the achievements will be), but you know how that infamous Microsoft certification process works. Cross your fingers and wish upon a star, but no matter we're still slapping a rumor tag on this one. Come on fanboys, can we get a Castlevania in February for the win?

[Thanks, Aaron W.]

Achievements for Worms, SOTN, and more!

X360A has come up with the achievements on 4 (count 'em 4) huge upcoming Live Arcade games. Achievements have been revealed for Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Alien Hominid HD, Catan, and yes, Worms. We can only assume Catan is the shortened title for Settlers of Catan. Catan's achievements are fairly basic, of the "get X many points" variety. The SOTN achievements have a spoiler in them, so read at your own risk. The Worms achievements are centered around online play and will more than likely be unlocked by regular play. The Alien Hominid HD achievements range from funny to difficult. Some of them are downright evil (beat the final boss without using a continue -- 30 pts). So evil that you have to pronounce it "E-ville."

Hopefully this is a sign of these games releasing soon. We'll certainly welcome the fresh blood. Then again, how the hell will we pay for them all?

Castlevania on XBLA, hot whipping action

Oh, we have waited for this day. We present to you the first video footage of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for Xbox Live Arcade. Fresh from CES, the video shows off the opening scene of the game, in which you play out the prologue (and determine the main character's beginning stats). Worth noting is the fact that the video contains both the original music and voice acting from the Playstation version. If Konami has managed to squeeze the game and all of its (amazing) audio into 50MB, we'll be very impressed. The footage is unfortunately very shaky, but we'll take what we can get. And just for the record, we were not the ones playing. Because we would totally kick Dracula's ass, and, you know, actually hit him.

Trusty Bell gets US name, Chopin missing

First the good news, Trusty Bell: Chopin's Dream, is coming to the US (and presumably Europe). Now the other news, it will be called Eternal Sonata in the US. We'd like to chime in and say that Namco is lucky Konami hasn't snagged that one for a future Catlevania release. Finally, there's potentially puzzling news:

"The story of Eternal Sonata begins as a famous composer, on his deathbed, drifts between this life and the next. In his reverie, a happenstance encounter of a young girl who accepts her terrible destiny and a young boy fighting to save her, changes the destiny of the world. Uncover the light that shines in each of us in this enduring tale of good and evil."

Did anybody see that? Look closer. That's right, Chopin's name is nowhere to be found. Could Namco be removing the Chopin influence from the English version, or is it simply left out of the press release? The linked article refers only to a "famous composer." Eternal Sonata's strongest aspect thus far is its intriguing story, and we can only hope that it doesn't get lost in translation.

Symphony of the Night on XBLA!

Fans of androgynous vampires rejoice, 1UP reports that Castlevania: Symphony of the Night -- widely regarded as the best in the series, and frequently listed in various "greatest games of all time" lists -- is coming to Xbox Live Arcade. It is, unfortunately, the Playstation version which does not include the Saturn's bonus area. Still, this is incredible news for Castlevania fans and gamers everywhere -- enough to wash away the taste of the awful 3D Castlevanias perhaps? Oh, and Konami is planning quite a few more classics as well (Time Pilot, anyone?). Hit the read link for the whole story.
