Rumor: Next Xbox to improve 360 games

Here's an interesting Xbox 720 (you know, the next Xbox console) rumor. According to Xbox Evolved and their "sources", Microsoft is planning on implementing "forward compatibility" into their next console creation. Saying that the next Xbox will improve upon current 360 titles, increasing frame rate, draw distance, graphics, textures, etc. Interesting rumor, but we can't help point out that Xbox Evolved's use of the term "forward compatibility" doesn't really make sense.

If the Xbox 720 were to play Xbox 360 games and improve the the overall experience, that's simply called backwards compatibility. Just like the Xbox 360 plays (some) original Xbox games. So, we're not entirely sure what Xbox Evolved's rumor news is really about, because we sort of expected the Xbox 720 to play and improve the overall experience of 360 games. That is unless they're talking about future Xbox 360 games adding code to make them forward compatible with the 720. Actual code on the disc that the 720 will use to improve the features, look and experience. That's what we'd call a forward compatible Xbox 360 game.

DICE planning Mirror's Edge as a trilogy

Talking with AusGamers, Mirror's Edge senior producer Owen O'Brien acknowledged EA and DICE's plans to continue the Mirror's Edge franchise and shows interest in developing a level editor for future sequels.

"The story we're telling at the moment is kind of a trilogy, a three-story arc," said O'Brien, "there's a lot of scope to take the story in different directions, or maybe tell someone else's story." Though, O'Brien makes it very clear that Mirror's Edge, this first installment, will solely focus on Faith and her "experiences in the world." Good times.

All said, we don't know if talking trilogy is worthy of excitement or praise, not just yet. We have a demo to try out next month and the game's retail release to play through. Then, if all goes well, we say bring on more messenger bag running sequels.

Gears of War 2 Flashback map comparison pics

With Microsoft's official confirmation that Gears of War multiplayer maps Gridlock, Canals, Mansion, Subway, and Tyro Station would be remade for Gears 2, comes new comparison shots. The comparison photos (galleried below) show what each map looked like in the original Gears and the prettified version that'll be a part of the free Flashback Map Pack DLC for Gears 2. Let us be the first to say an icy Canals makes a chilled tear run down our cheek. It's lovely.

So, take a gander at the Gears vs. Gears 2 map comparison photos as well as the newly released multiplayer screens. Long live Tyro Station.

Mercenaries 2 'Total Payback' update is M.I.A.

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames fanboys who were excited to get their hands on the new Total Payback title update will, sadly, be dissapointed. Pandemic Studios has yet to release the new update, which was supposed to release on October 13th. The Mercenaries 2 forums are abuzz with angry gamers, so much so that forum moderators have been deleting threads that make mention of the Total Paypack update being delayed. We aren't sure what Pandemic's reason is for the delay or when it'll finally be released, but we've contacted them for comment and will update when we hear back.

[Thanks, Chris]

Rock Band 2 AC/DC achievements add 250GS

Achievements for the Walmart exclusive expansion Rock Band 2: AC/DC Live have made their way onto the internet and we now know that the game is being treated as an all out expansion as far as achievements go.

AC/DC Live will only add twelve new achievements (viewable after the jump) worth 250 Gamerscore, which is the maximum Gamerscore a game expansion can offer. Interesting is the fact that the achievements do not all pertain to the AC/DC Live songs, as some actually refer to purchasable DLC. So, Rock Band 2 owners will be receiving a few more achievement challenges without an AC/DC Live purchase.

Bungie talks Recon, Forge, achievements and confirms new weapon

Recently, we asked you -our loyal X3F readers - to submit questions for our interview with Bungie's own Brian "Sketch" Jarrard. And boy did you come through! After sifting through hundreds then choosing a few questions, we digitally sat down with Jarrard to clarify questions about Halo 3: Recon, discuss the Mythic Map Pack and chat about other Bungie related topics. Let's just say we learned a lot!

In the interview, Jarrard confirmed that Halo 3: Recon will feature at least one new weapon and a brand new soundtrack, also confirming that the blue / red Covenant outline featured in the Recon trailer is "true to the spirit of the actual game." We also discuss what Recon's Forge won't be and why Bungie chose not to go the route that Far Cry 2 did. As if that wasn't enough exclusive info, we discuss Recon matchmaking, Vidmaster achievements, the Mythic Map Pack maps and even pie. We even snuck in some Humpday Challenge smack talk. Make the jump to read the complete interview.

Last Chance: Win Dead Space prizes

If you weren't already aware thanks to the nifty banner posted on the right, we're celebrating the release of Dead Space all week long by giving fanboys (and fangirls) the chance to win a copy of Dead Space and other goodies. You should also be aware that entry into the first giveaway ENDS TONIGHT at 11:00PM eastern. So, we highly advise you enter the giveaway by posting a comment on the official entry blog. Tomorrow will bring even more Dead Space prizes, so be sure to come back for a chance to win.

Crazy Mouse also headed to XBLA this week

Chinese developer Ultizen just announced that their arcade title Crazy Mouse will be releasing to the Xbox Live Arcade on Wednesday, October 15th. And it'll be the first mainland China game to release to the XBLA.

For 400 Microsoft points, Crazy Mouse purchasers will get to experience 30+ levels of mouse scurrying, four player online multiplayer and all the cheese you can consume in one sitting. Not really, but one could speculate that an unlimited cheese eating buffet offer would help the game sell. As long as there's bleu cheese, we're in.

Gears 2 surpasses original's pre-orders, launch plans revealed

Today, Microsoft announced that Gears of War 2 has surpassed the original Gears' pre-order numbers and also informed us that it's "poised to become the must-have video game this holiday season." Can't argue that.

Also as part of the press release, we're informed of all their Gears 2 launch plans and offers including a gold Lancer unlock with the limited edition, gold Hammerburst unlock given out at all 20,000 midnight launches, gameplay tips from the Epic team and a special Game with Fame weekend. Not just that, but Microsoft also confirmed that they'll be releasing a Flashback Map Pack (featuring five remade Gears maps) on launch day, which will be a free download with redemption code found in new copies of Gears 2. Bring on November 7th!

Castle Crashers patch ready to enter MS cert

The long overdue, much anticipated and highly demanded patch for The Behemoth's Castle Crashers is done. You know, the patch that's supposed to fix the game's online issues. Like we said, it's done, just don't rejoice yet. See, it still has to travel on over to Microsoft certification where (GASP!) it could be rejected for some reason. And we don't have to tell you what a rejection from Microsoft will do to the patch's potential release. We shudder to think. Keep those fingers crossed for a patch release in a month's time, that is, if you still care.

Silent Hill: Homecoming Euro release now in '09

Even though the latest Silent Hill installment has already released to North American retailers, Europeans will have to wait until February 2009 to get their hands on Konami's Silent Hill: Homecoming.

For reasons unknown (though localization seems to be the culprit), Homecoming has been delayed for release in Europe, pushed back from late October to sometime in February of next year. But don't be too sad Silent Hill'ers, because there's a certain game releasing this week and it should satisfy your horror needs until next year. Promise.

Video: Gears of War 2 is art and is gorgeous

Continuing Epic's series of Gears of War 2 subject by subject analysis featurettes, we bring you the latest where Cliff and crew chat about Gears 2 as art and where their inspiration comes from.

You can watch the latest video (currently exclusive to Yahoo!) embedded after the break and take in Gears 2's gorgeous vistas, hear the inspiration behind the architecture, learn what the design focus was and get a sense for the new graphical enhancement the sequel has over the original. Most notably, at around 1:50 minute mark, you'll witness one the most visually stunning underground caves that your eyes have ever come across. Jiggly wiggly plants, jaw dropping water, fog ... oh yeah ... we're in love.

NXE storage solution: Free 512MB memory card or cheap 20GB HDD

Last week, Microsoft informed us that they'd be offering a "storage solution" to Xbox 360 Arcade and Core owners who didn't have 128MBs of storage to install the New Xbox Experience. We now have those storage solution specifics.

Microsoft just launched a new Xbox Storage Upgrade website where Arcade and Core owners can request their storage solution. All you have to do is enter your console's serial number and ID, then the system will check to make sure your console isn't an Elite or Pro. Some are reporting that the system knows if you have a HDD connected and will deny your storage upgrade, so be careful. Once your console is verified to be lacking 128MBs of storage, you'll be given a special offer based on which console you own. The storage solution offers are:
  • Xbox 360 Acade owners: Refurbished 20GB HDD + 3 months of Xbox Live for $30.
  • Xbox 360 Core owners: 512MB memory card for free OR refurbished 20GB HDD for $20
[Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]
