UK electronics repair specialist Micromart is throwing in the towel in the war against the red ring of death. Micromart, who acts as a repair service for major retailers, announced that their company will no longer fix Xbox 360s that display the three ring of light error stating that its a problem that is both too common and too expensive to fix. "We were seeing about 30 a week before we pulled the plug on the service" said a Micromart rep and that the motherboard is the main cause of failure in the consoles. Micromart will still repair 360s that display other errors, but from now on will be directing customers to Microsoft if they experience three red light problems. The negative press the Xbox 360 has been receiving due to hardware failures keeps on surfacing. How long will it take until Microsoft cracks and either discusses the problem or acknowledges that they are looking into resolving the hardware failures? Only time will tell, but we have to agree that this is getting a little old by now.
[Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]

Here's what I did:
Exactly one year and a month after my launch console broke, I was informed that I would have to pay 140 dollars for its repair. I balked at this absurd fee and went straight to Target where I bought a brand new one. I put the broken one in the box and returned it to Target for a full refund.
Score: Me-1, Microsoft-0 (suck my balls MS, suck my balls)

I dont know if it was a major factor in the ultimate falure of the Sega cd but It had a general recall on all units sold.
This is a sensative issue I dont think Microsoft is sure how to proceed with. Sales wise they R where they wanna be, and they R adding nails to Sonys' coffin lid by the month.
Would a general recall of all 360's damage the succes of the 360? Or is it just that the cost of it would be too much of a loss? Maybe both, this is dangerous ground and reminds me of the movie Independance Day when they finally disabled the enemys shield but had no missles left to win. Some1 is gonna have to sacrifice something FTW!

to microsoft
you guys really need to come clean and start addressing the public about the 360 failure rate. I just had my second console died on me only after four months and everyday day i read diffrent posts about people's 360's giving out becuase of hardware failure. Now like everyone else i have to pay over a hundred buck just to get it fix. You would guess after paying 400 for a console it should last. Instead of people getting newly repair consoles they get a refurbished one which was propable broken. With all the money being spent on repairs i would have been better off getting a ps3.

@21:
Wow. Illigal, and unethical. And Microsoft loses? Nope. Target loses. And the next poor soul that buys that "New" 360.
I hope you used cash, because when they can't match the serial number on the box with the number on the machine, then look at the recipt for the sale and see your CC number, I believe they can come knock on your door.
Asshole.

Microsoft really needs to shape up here. I agree, this is getting very old.
They need to just come out and say. Stop spinning dodgy commentary and lazy statements on the issue.
Microsoft, you have a problem. Admit to it. And then take action. They should really put some sort of repair / compensation plan in place. And at the very least, go back and fix the broken design. A 30% failure rate is absurd.

My 360 just died on Tuesday evening. I guess that is what I get for thinking that people who's consoles break was because of misuse and improper ventalation.
I am still waiting on the box. I kinda thought mine was doing really well since it was a launch day console and all. I just hope that it is fixed for good when I get it back.

Look I love my 360 and have no regrets purchasing the premium at launch and an Elite in June. But seriously Microsoft needs to come clean on this. I have had my premium sent out twice now, once they replaced it with a new machine, recently they repaired it. While I feel their customer service is top notch, I think they should address this issue now before the PR spirals outta control.

rualanthony,
I think it's because nobody wants to go through all the trouble of contacting a lawyer, paying whatever fees to set a class action suit, etc. I'm sure whoever does will get their fifteen minutes of fame and be a hero to all of us (multiple) 360 owners.

The old switcheroo at target, huh? Walmart checks the serial numbers, and then that goes on the receipt. Then when you bring it back, they match them up... I've done it twice, so that option wouldn't work for me. Try buying one at Best Buy and getting the service plan, a lot of people are just walking in and exchanging them.

My 360 is currently in for repair due to the 3 red lights. It's been 15 working days, so I called Microsoft Support to find out what's going on. They have a voice message now announcing that repairs currently take about 25 working days (two additional weeks!!!) instead of 15 and that they're trying to get back down to 15 by the end of July. This is in Germany by the way.
I suspect something's going on there.. Maybe they're installing the new heatsinks?...

What are you all talking about? The failure rate is within industry standards. Move along. Nothing to see here. Please disperse.
