Two Worlds date confirmed, MMOG confusion

Having uncovered the UK release date (May 9th) for Two Worlds, we would not be satisfied until we had a US release date in hand. Having contacted the game's developer, Reality Pump, we can now confirm a worldwide release date of May 9th. Two Worlds, for those that don't know, aspires to be a multiplayer, open ended RPG in the style of Oblivion. With any luck, it could bring solitary, single player Oblivionites together.

In other news, there seems to be some confusion regarding the recent announcement that Two Worlds has gone massively multiplayer. According to IGN and 1UP, only the PC version will be an MMO and the 360 version will remain restricted to 8 players. Other sources, however, maintain that both versions will make the MMO jump. Meanwhile, the official Two Worlds website makes no distinction between the two versions. Finally, the official press release makes no note of platform exclusivity either. Whatever the 360 version's fate, we're still excited for some multiplayer RPG action.

Check out the press release and make your own judgments after the break.

"SouthPeak. Games, a leading independent videogame publisher, is thrilled to announce that Two Worlds, its massive, open-ended role-playing game to be released this spring for the PC and Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, is having its online component greatly expanded. Whereas formerly Two Worlds was to allow up to eight players to adventure together online, the game will now support thousands of players online at one time.

'Reality Pump was in the fortunate position of being both ahead of schedule and given some extra development time, so they could truly bring out the full potential of Two Worlds," said Katie Morgan, Executive Vice President of SouthPeak Games. "In our opinion, the best things in life are those that are shared with friends, and the more friends the better!'

Online players of Two Worlds will now be able to join parties that are competing against others to solve quests, battle other players in the arena to gain glory, form armies to storm enemy cities, arrange and compete in horse races, or simply socialize in a medieval pub. Like the single-player experience, the massively multiplayer online component of Two Worlds will offer an opportunity for the players to affect and change the lands they live in."

1. It's amazing that an MMO can be developed this quickly. I'm not really into Oblivion type RPGs but the MMO aspect is really attractive.

2. after reading through the material on their site, this isn't your traditional MMO...it seems like the towns are more like virtual lobbies where you go to find up to 8 ppl to go on quests with...they also have an arena which allows level restricted 1v1 combat...and a few other things, but its far from your traditional MMO where everyone sees everyone all the time...its seems to me more like you only see the other people playing while inside the towns, or when you're grouped up and on a quest, you'll see your groupmates. Its a nice twist that melds the best of both worlds between a small multiplayer aspect, and the typical MMO...but tries to bring something different to the table.

3. At #2,
The way you are describing it makes it sounds like guild wars, which is fine by me. It's a simple answer to lag and players killing you/stealing your loot.

4. This sounds great! I always wanted someone to go with me when I go into caves or dangerous places. I never played MMO's because I'm not much into computer games. But, I really hope they don't charge for playing like Phanasty Star Online. I'm already playing for the game and the Live service. However, I understand if they do charge everbody needs to get paid. If all goes as planned with this game it will be a another great time-waster the X360 has acquired.

5. At #3, its definitly sounding alot like Guild Wars, so for those of you who are upset about this game possibly becoming an MMO it would be very good in this style as you can trade and chat amongst anyone in the same pplace as you without being brutally attacked and killed when trying to quest/explore.

6. i also forgot to mention that i really hope if this is MMO that chat isnt being heard from every single person in the same town as you. Possibly a different set of chats for General/Trade/Group/Guild(clan)/etc., much like guild wars as i mentioned above this before

7. MMO or Single Player game, this will be a great game for the summer drought. And I'd like to add that both "Xbox 360" and :online component greatly expanded" are in the same sentence, which would suggest the 360 version is an MMO. If the game is an MMO, I pray it is free (I already paid $50 to Microsoft).

8. will buy if its free to play online.

9. PvP is what makes a MMO worth playing. Without PvP (player vs player) in unrestricted combat, you just have a glorified single player RPG. Besides the "social" aspect of questing with other players theres no point to even going online. There better off restricting it to 8, or adding a PvP system. Maybe keep "pvp free" zones in capitol cities or something. But to have restricted 1v1, lvl bases arena combat is pointless.
