Joystiq talks to Itagaki about Ninja Gaiden II
Sitting down with Team Ninja head (and snappy dresser) Tomonobu Itagaki, Joystiq (along with some people who aren't from Joystiq) got to dig up some info regarding Ninja Gaiden II. For example, gamers looking for something a little easier than the first game are in luck. While the Ninja Dog mode found in Ninja Gaiden Black essentially went out of its way to make fun of lesser players for choosing an easier difficulty, Ninja Gaiden II's Path of the Acolyte mode will do no such thing. Not that we had to worry about that. No, that fact is much more important for certain Joystiq bloggers (who shall remain nameless). Head over to Joystiq for the full interview.
Spring Showcase no shows: Halo Wars and Alan Wake

It's kind of hard to believe that an event designed around letting journalists try their collective hand at all the latest games isn't the right venue for these games (or any game, really). We suppose it's fair to say that Alan Wake -- a survival horror game -- might require more intimacy to appreciate, but Halo Wars? Perhaps Microsoft thought journos wouldn't be able to grasp the controls in the 30-45 minutes of playtime they were allowed.
Whatever the reason behind the decision to leave out two of Microsoft Games Studios' biggest titles from the Spring Showcase, we hope we'll see something soon. And we really hope that their absence doesn't portend any delays.
CliffyB: No party system in GOW2 would be "a pretty big f*ckup"
Joystiq managed to grab a second of Cliff Bleszinski's time at Microsoft's Spring Showcase yesterday (seems like everyone did). Naturally, the discussion centered around Epic's bigger, badder, more badass sequel to Gears of War, which they have wisely dubbed Gears of War 2. Lots of things are discussed in the interview, ranging from merchandising to how Gears of War pacing will work with hundreds of enemies on screen. The biggest tidbit in the interview, however, centers around the game's online functionality. When asked whether or not Gears of War 2 will feature a party system, Cliffy responded, "I think that if we were not to have a feature like that, it would probably be a pretty big fuckup."
Yeah, that should be enough to pique your interest. Head over to Joystiq for the full interview.

New Banjo 3 details: co-op and online play

Oh, and in case you'd rather not futz with the do-it-yourself vehicle creation (you old fuddy-duddy, you), the fact sheet assures gamers that many pre-built vehicles are available. The fact sheet also refers to the vehicle creation as user created content. Could this mean that players will be able to trade their vehicle designs? Guess we'll have to wait and see.
Fable 2 arrives Holiday 2008, new media
Spring Showcase news just keeps pouring out, and now we've got some brand new shots from Fable 2 and (finally) a scheduled release for Holiday 2008. Granted, it's not too specific, but at least we've narrowed it down to somewhere between October and December. Included in our new gallery below are screenshots, character renders, concept art, and the official (and awesome) Fable 2 box art. We particularly like the image of the evil heroine seen above. We're not sure if all evil characters will receive the pale, vampiric look or if our evil hero simply spends too much time indoors. Either way, she looks badass, and frankly we don't think we'd have the courage to ask. Check out the gallery below.

Halo Wars audio designers make birds you can't see
The Halo Wars RTS Chapter on Bungie.net has conducted an interview with Ensemble Studios' Kevin McMullan and JD Smith, the two people in charge of the audio in Halo Wars. Again -- as seems to be a trend with Halo Wars -- you won't find any breathtaking news in the interview, but it does serve as an interesting glimpse into the development process. McMullan and Smith discuss how complex the soundscape is in RTS games, which combine the sounds of combat, dialogue, UI effects, and music all at once. They also talk about the challenge presented by creating sound for a Halo RTS that has to stay true to the series and yet still create its own identity. Finally, and perhaps most interesting, is the discussion of creating ambient sound effects. In particular, Smith mentions creating birds that aren't graphically represented in the game, but instead are represented solely through moving, intelligent sounds. Fascinating stuff. Even more fascinating is Smith's source file he used to create one of the game's bird calls: his 3-year-old daughter. Hit the "read" links below to read the interviews and hear the sound files.

Halo Wars designer talks controls, DLC, and more
Australian site Gameplayer recently managed to snag a few minutes with Graeme Devine, lead designer on Halo Wars at Ensemble Studios. While there are no earth-shattering announcements to be pulled from the interview -- sorry kids, still no confirmation of playable Covenant or Flood -- there are still a few tasty bits to be gleaned. First of all, Devine reemphasizes that one of the main goals of Halo Wars is to prove that RTS games can work without a keyboard and mouse.
With this in mind, the team at Ensemble created simple controls, consolidating similar actions -- such as different types of unit selection to presses of a single button. For example, single press of the A button will select one unit, a double click will select all units on screen, and a triple click will select the entire army. Another addition, all levels have been designed so that they can be completed without rotating the camera. Sure, players can rotate the camera, but they don't have to.
Finally, Devine mentions that there may be a level editor included with Halo Wars and also details Ensemble's plans for downloadable content. At the moment, new units and maps are definitely in the works. Even more exciting, Ensemble is considering releasing extra campaigns as well. Hit the "read" link for the full interview.

Wits and Wagers trivializes XBLA
A new Xbox Live Arcade release is upon us, brothers and sisters. This vile temptation goes by the name of Wits and Wagers and it tempts our youth to succumb to the terrible sin of gambling. True, the abomination may be disguised as a simple trivia game, but close inspection reveals that the only way to win is to bet on the winning answer. Truly it is an evil game, and one that you should spurn as you would spurn a rabid dog.
But seriously, folks, Wits and Wagers is a trivia game and it's available now for 800 Microsoft points. Oh, and Scene-It owners take note: it features support for the Big Button controller. It also make rather ... interesting use of the Vision camera. Go grab the trial version and see what you think.

Halo Wars April update talks strategy, music
The monthly Halo Wars update for April is up. Unfortunately, there isn't much news concerning gameplay (sorry folks, no playable Covenant or Flood yet), but that won't stop us from detailing what was there. What little info there was regarding gameplay centered around the cancellation of Ensemble's internal tournament. The tournament is still coming, but the team decided to wait for a few more things to be implemented in the game. Said things are referred to as "really cool stuff" and should complete "the game's full arsenal," so the team thought it would be best to wait. Other tweaks are also being made to air vehicles which are apparently a little too effective for hit-and-runs. Oh, and Scorpion tanks, while resource-intensive and slow to build, are proving quite popular among the Ensemble staff (imagine that). The update also details a rather effective counter to an opponent that favors building Scorpions (hint: go Marines!).
The rest of the update focuses on the game's music. Essentially, Music and Sound Director Stephen "Big Al" Rippy is currently walking a tightrope between making sure the game's music holds true to the Halo universe while still being able to expand upon the work already established by Bungie's Marty O'Donnell (who likes Rippy's work, incidentally). For what it's worth, Rippy says all of the music for Halo Wars is now in the can (assuming there are no more significant changes). Let's hope that means we can get a closer look at the full game soon.

Looky! It's a Ninja Gaiden II Xbox 360

The ever watchful folks over at 360Sync recently spotted a new Ninja Gaiden II standee at their local GameStop. At first glance it appears to be nothing more than your typical standee, but look closer and you can see glory. Yes, that is a Ninja Gaiden II Xbox 360 (and it appears to be an Elite at that). GameStop will apparently be giving these consoles away -- how many we don't know -- sometime in the near future. Unfortunately, the URL listed on the standee currently leads to a dead page. Here's hoping it goes live soon, because we have got to get our hands on that sweet console. Just look at it ... sitting there in all its majesty. That thing could probably slay a hundred demons before breakfast.
Ninja Gaiden II website offers neat extras, new video
We're not sure how long it's been live, but there is a newly revamped (Game of the Year 2008) Ninja Gaiden II website up on Xbox.com. The website actually offers some very cool extras to fans of the series and, in a refreshing twist, the site offers some actual new information about the game for those who know where to look. Firstly, the website allows users to build their own custom desktop wallpaper using the games various weapons as a backdrop (see our creation above). The cool part -- and this is where the new info come in -- is that you can check out a brief video snippet of each weapon to help you decide which ones to pick. The videos show off weapons that have so far remained under wraps, most notably the kusari-gama (which has an awesome essence attack, the projectile weapons, and a new Ninpo called "Art of the Piercing Void." Another bit of new info: Ryu can now charge his projectile attacks as well as his melee attacks. We have to admit it's pretty cool to watch him hurl multiple incendiary shuriken into a hapless foe.
The website also offers a somewhat bizarre minigame in which players send attacks to other opponents. The strange part is that players have to wait for others to respond. It's sort of like playing chess over the phone, except instead of moving pieces on a board, your killing this with a sword. At any rate, it's a neat site, and all the fanboys slavering over Ninja Gaiden II (that should be all of you) should definitely check it out.

Peter Jackson's Halo project now hiring
MTV's Multiplayer speculated and has now confirmed that Microsoft is currently hiring new team members for Peter Jackson's mysterious Halo-related project. The speculation arose when Microsoft posted several new job listings looking for people to "help develop a new experience in the Halo universe" alongside an "external luminary." So, Halo and a luminary. Sounds like Peter's project to us.While at first it seemed strange that Microsoft would only now be hiring for the project, Microsoft followed up with MTV to clear things up. The company told MTV, "Microsoft Game Studios has been hard at work collaborating with Peter Jackson and Bungie on the development of [a Peter Jackson-helmed Halo project]. At this time, it's necessary to grow the internal team to keep pace with development. Bungie will continue to remain involved in multiple aspects of the Halo Universe with MGS." So, it turns out that the project's development team is merely expanding -- as opposed to just now being formed -- which would indicate the project has become more expansive as well.
Let's hope we can hear some news about the actual game sometime soon. Seriously, we're starving for info.

Halo Wars alpha spotted on Xbox Live

We've been receiving reports for the last few days that a Halo Wars alpha is floating around on Xbox Live. Now, thanks to 360Sync, we have picture proof of its existence. For whatever reason, the alpha has the title "Sway," though it's clearly the Halo Wars alpha according to the status message underneath. What does this mean to the common gamer? Well, not much really. Keeping in mind that an alpha test can precede a final product by many, many months -- the Halo 3 beta came out four months before the final release -- this doesn't mean we're that much closer to seeing Halo Wars hit the shelves. Still, who knows, maybe a public beta is in the works for Halo Wars. At the very least we should have a demo to look forward to.
In the meantime, we'll just have to be jealous of those lucky alpha testers.
