While EA has yet to release an official statement regarding the problem users have found success with two bandaid solutions -- which point to cache problems in the game. According to the EA Forum users clearing the cache of the Xbox 360 and disabling the auto-save feature in NHL 09 may help fix the problem but as gamers play more of the game the issue returns.
Let's hope we'll get a fix for the game soon. Actually, it's cool. We'll just play our 82 game seasons in one sitting. No, really.
Update: EA Sports actually responded to this issue late last night recommending the cache clear route as a possible solution. They have yet responded to the cries for a patch.

in my opinion, all sports games suck. They are good every once in a while, but adding slightly new features isn't enough to warrant a new release every year.

Second, I have been having this issue and their solution does not work. I have had to clear my cache with the yxxRBLBxx twice b4 every play through. and even then sometimes it does not work. How did this get throguh certification.

The cache clear combination is actually:
Y (in X360 Memory menu) then X,X,LB,RB,X,X

Good luck guys.
When Halo3 came out there was a similar issue that caused DREs on certain 360s but not others. Without going into too much detail... it was not the 360 itself, or bad Disks (which was my guess). There was a 400 page thread with something like 3K post on xbox.com forums of this Halo3 debacle that mysteriously disappeared one day. We were left out in the cold! A patch never came out. The only "fix" from M$ on this issue was clear the cache.
It worked for very few on that deleted thread. My Halo 3 issue went away after clearing the cache about 15X, once every boot. What I hated the most was the lack of transparency. We didn't know if they fixed the problem quietly or even if they were working on it.
Make noise and good luck.

I have no problems whatsoever and been playing like crazy (and it's on a refurb console after my first one died), but my best friend cannot play more than 10 minutes with his relatively brand new Elite...

Come on EA, this is the same thing as last year. Fix the game so we can enjoy it. (If this was madden it would have already been fixed)

Wow, yet another EA title with big problems. If it weren't for tiger(which has server problems all the time and is the only decent golf game on 360), I wouldn't play any of there glitchy server-problem based games.

So I'm almost positive there's been at least one huge problem with every EA Sports game this year.

What the hell is it with hockey and game destroying problems, the NHL 2k series had a problem like this twice! And it wasn't patched either time!
