Our partners in crime at AutoblogGreen -- just like Autoblog, only with more miles per gallon and fewer emissions -- have discovered that Project Gotham Racing 4 is set to feature a very interesting racing challenge. Part of the game's invitational series of races, the challenge is called "Electric Vs Petrol Showdown" and allows players to "take the wheel of a two-seater, silent, electric sportscar (the Tesla Roadster) and face-off against a gas-guzzling, noisy, mean machine (the Ferrari Testarossa)." For those that don't know, the Tesla Roadster is reportedly a damned impressive piece of kit, boasting the ability to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in about 4 seconds. The environmentally friendly super car can also travel 200 miles on a single battery charge. The best part, thanks to PGR4, is that you won't have to spend $98,000 (base price, mind you) to try one out.

Uhhh..you do realize that electric cars are NOT good for the environment. Sure they have basically zero emissions themselves, they still need to get the electricity from somewhere. Now, I wonder where the electricity comes from...hmm...oh yeah, those gigantic pollution machines called power plants.

Those "gigantic pollution machines called power plants" are vastly more efficient than those puny pollution machines we call car engines. Also, consolidating the pollution at a few points (rather than million upon million of cars) makes dealing with it much easier, either through the use of more aggressive emission retention mechanisms or by migrating to more environmentally-friendly methods of production. Don't forget that having a single source of power for everything from lightbulbs to cars would allow for more investment into power-delivery infrastructure, and that even if we pollute about the same when using coal power plants (I see some momentum towards nuclear, but some people are still unreasonably afraid of meltdowns), we'll still be able to produce all our energy from domestic sources, something that cannot be said about oil.
The one thing I'm worried about is whether or not the Tesla will actually be able to match a gas-guzzler in top speed, it wouldnt really be a fair race if the Tesla tops out at 100-120ish MPH.

Mshimer, do you realize you are retarded? Because you obviously are, because if you knew anything about electricity, is that, in this day and age, a large amount of our electricity is made from either windmills or Hydro-dams.
In fact, the amount of electricity needed to power electric cars is such a drop in the bucket that they themselves aren't, and won't (Until they are widely adopted) have an impact on the electricity industry for some time, if ever.

mshimer5, this is the plan:
1) Get all cars on electric.
2) Get CO2-free power plants.
I've been thinking about the problem. Maybe use an enzyme to surround nuclear waste (still will take 10,000 years to degrade). Make a new solar panel? Wind or water power?
Humans are smart, we can get rid of CO2 without huge losses if we put our minds to it, and we have the best and brightest for that job.

I'll add the biggest problem (scientific and political):
India and China
Two billion people are getting electricity from what? Not the green-fuels we Americans are trying to standardize. They just burn whatever they can. Not to blame them, we can't. They are trying to catch up, and eventually we will probably have to lay the ban hammer on them, though.

Apparantly, I am retarded because someone "believes" our energy comes mostly from eco-friendly means...funny. Anyway, sure, one electric car isn't going to kill the earth, but that isn't the point. You have to compare it to the average fuel car. Power plants generate a lot of pollution, and with an electric car this is an enormous inefficiency. See, the car's engine itself is not very efficient, so there is some loss there. Then there are the power lines and all other forms of transsmission to get the electricity to the car, so there is some (actually quite a lot) loss there. Then there is the power plant itself...nothing really needed to be said about that. Sure, if we could truly adapt to an eco-friendly energy source, that would be great, but that is not feasible. Nuclear is our best shot, but the eco-people are still against that, and then there is people's unwarranted fear of Nuclear power (how many people in the US have died from Nuclear power plants? ZERO).
All I'm trying to say is you have to look at the whole picture instead of the end product. If you look at the car itself, it seems to be much better, but then you are forgetting about everything else. The only thing electric cars could do for us is alleviate our dependance of oil.
