The guys over at Gamerscore Blog expressed their discontent with the failure rate of Xbox 360s and the customer service for getting consoles repaired. As such, they are changing the warranty policy worldwide to 3 years after the consoles purchase when dealing with the 3 red rings of light hardware failure on Xbox 360s. Anyone who's payed for any repairs up to this point will be reimbursed in full. This means that anyone who bought their console at launch will be covered until November 22nd 2008. On top of the press release, Peter Moore himself posted an open letter to the community on the policy change, which is included after the break, as well as a FAQ on how it's being rolled out.

Another way to win a Simpsons 360
Previously, we mentioned that you could win a yellow Simpsons themed Xbox 360 by participating in the Cloning Clyde Play and Win contest. Fine and dandy except for those of us who don't have or want to purchase Cloning Clyde to enter. Well, Microsoft has those of you covered by giving away another Simpsons 360 AND a trip to the movie premiere in LA to one lucky entrant who sends them an email. That's right, all you have to do is send shoot an email off to [email protected] with the subject "Simpsons Movie Premiere" by July 14th and you are entered. Very simple. Again, one lucky winner will receive the coveted yellow Simpsons Xbox 360 and a trip to LA for The Simpsons Movie premiere. Good luck everyone!
Micromart won't repair three red light 360s
UK electronics repair specialist Micromart is throwing in the towel in the war against the red ring of death. Micromart, who acts as a repair service for major retailers, announced that their company will no longer fix Xbox 360s that display the three ring of light error stating that its a problem that is both too common and too expensive to fix. "We were seeing about 30 a week before we pulled the plug on the service" said a Micromart rep and that the motherboard is the main cause of failure in the consoles. Micromart will still repair 360s that display other errors, but from now on will be directing customers to Microsoft if they experience three red light problems. The negative press the Xbox 360 has been receiving due to hardware failures keeps on surfacing. How long will it take until Microsoft cracks and either discusses the problem or acknowledges that they are looking into resolving the hardware failures? Only time will tell, but we have to agree that this is getting a little old by now.

HD DVD peripheral outselling standalone boxes
Apparently, the HD DVD drive add-on for the Xbox 360 has been selling like hot cakes. The HD DVD Group announced back in April that it sold over 100,000 standalone players in the U.S. in its first year of being on the market. These numbers did not include HD DVD PC drives or the Xbox 360's peripheral. More recently, however an MS representative stated that the HD DVD add-on has sold over 155,000 units in the U.S., over 50% more sales than the standalone sets. Perhaps the $200 price tag, or less, has really helped push units. Do you have an HD DVD drive for your 360?
It's the CPU key that prevents 360 modding
The Xbox 360 modding community's excitement levels are reaching an all-time high as they are one key away from making their modding dreams come true. The ultimate goal of 360 modders is to get the console to revert back to the vulnerable kernel that was found, but quickly patched by Microsoft. And it sounds like Microsoft blocked the ability to revert back to that kernel by blowing an eFuse on the CPU. Modders have now found out that they can bypass this whole eFuse thing and revert back to the vulnerable kernel if the CPU key is known. But guess what. The CPU key is only attainable through blown eFuse data, so it's a catch twenty-two and no progress has been made on attaining the CPU key through other methods. So, as of now, their attempts have been unsuccessful. If we were Microsoft we'd be working on another way to block the modding community's advances, because it may only be a few weeks before they find out how to get the CPU key, revert back to the vulnerable kernel, and mod, mod, mod until the sun goes down.
Wake me up when the PS3 has games ...
Previously, we've posted about Sarcastic Gamer's various work, because we find it A: very well done and B: very entertaining. And his latest song parody doesn't let us down. Sarcastic Gamer's "No Frickin' Games!" is a musical parody of Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends" that talks about the Playstation 3 having ... well, no frickin' games. And, as you know, we're not all about PS3 bashing here at X3F, but this song is too funny-good-times not to share with you guys. Heck, we've laughed at our 360 too with the "Ring of Fire" parody, because it's also greatness on a bun. So, give the song a download, have a good laugh, and thank the lord that we don't have to deal with a lack of games on our 360.

Xbox 360's failure rate at 30%?
The Xbox 360's biggest source of negative press revolves around one glaring issue ... its perceived failure rate. And the media keeps churning out the bitterness. After writing an article on the Xbox 360's potential problems, tech site Smarthouse started receiving emails from customers who've had bricked 360 experiences. And after receiving more than 100 horror story emails and getting info from an Aussie EB Games manager, they're estimating that the Xbox 360's failure rate is somewhere around 30%. Though, this magical 30% failure rate number is coming from one EB Games manager, which Smarthouse feels can be justified since they've received numerous broken 360 emails. So, take such mathematical analysis for what it's worth.
We can't emphasize enough that the hardware failure issue is one of the only problems that has tainted the 360's image. Yet our friends over in Redmond refuse to address the problem specifically. Our experiences at X3F have been mixed as I'm on my third 360 and both David and Richard are still cooking along on their original consoles. What about you, how many 360s have you gone through?
Tiltboard gets priced and it's spendy
Talismoon's little Tiltboard project is finally blooming as they just announced that the Tiltboard will available for purchase next week. But be warned, it's expensive ... very expensive. This board, which allows tilt control on your 360, will retail for $39.99 (ouch!) not including a controller or soldering iron. Though, we have to admit it does have more features than we initially expected including adjustments for sensitivity, zero degree setting and an option to invert the Y axis. If tilting is important to you and your bank account/mod skills can handle it, then we must say that the Tiltboard looks to be your NPD: Xbox 360's May sales are good enough
Gather around kids, it's NPD numbers time! May's NPD hardware/software sales just hit the news wire and aren't anything overly Earth shattering. The Xbox 360 did just fine in May, moving 155,000 units with four of the top ten selling games being 360 titles. So, things are going pretty good. Why not great? Because Nintendo is still grinning ear to ear as they unloaded an amazing 338,000 Wiis and are gaining ground on the 360's marketshare. But things aren't all that bad, because the PS3 is under performing selling only 81,000 units with no games listed on the top ten sales chart. The numbers speak for themselves and should make it pretty obvious where Microsoft needs to focus their evil. It's on Mario ... it's on.
360 price cut not coming anytime soon
The other day we reported on rumors that internally Microsoft was taking an Xbox 360 price drop seriously. Well, the Gamerscore Blog crew was quick to squash our hopes of a cheaper 360 by getting an official response from the guy who made the comment, David Hufford. In response to Bloomberg's article, Hufford says that "the comment, which is accurately reported, unfortunately has now been taken way out of context and being reported as if I am signaling a price drop. I was not, I am not". David says that his comment was made two months ago in regards to discussing NPD sales numbers and chatting generally about hardware pricing. So, he wasn't commenting on Microsoft's specific 360 pricing strategy and therefore no price cut ... sorry guys.
