Well, hopefully it's not as hard to implement HDMI as it is to make a keyboard/mouse work correctly.I do have HDMI envy. I'm not sure why though. I know that I probably won't be able to tell the difference, but I can't help it. I would love to cut another digital-to-analog conversion out of the current circuit. I've been considering selling my current 360 on ebay to help fund the purchase of an elite. It has the extra HD space, HDMI, and it matches all of my components. But my original 360 I got at launch has not had a problem yet, so maybe I'll wait until it does.

It is impossible not to be pessimistic.
1: There is no way this can be HDCP compliant.
2: This cannot be a digital connection. The 360 can do 1080p via component and VGA, this is not needed since its still not going to be digital.
3: Why do we want use HDMI to only transfer video, when it can transfer audio as well?
Lame excuse for a cable here. Don't hold out hope for this cause its not going to do a bit of difference for 99% of people.

It won't work with HD DVD output, you need a true HDCP-compliant HDMI port to get past the DRM built into every HD DVD sold. This is why your component cables, which are perfectly capable of outputing a 1080p signal, don't. In regards to the 360, I don't see the advantage of outputing in 1080p without an Elite. A few games support it, but is there really a difference in the level of detail in those games between 720p/1080i and 1080p? Probably not. Well that's unless 1080p Virtual Tennis really pushes your buttons...

Meh
I purchased an Elite for this very reason...to try and see what all the fuss coming from the PS3 fanboy camp was all about, you that we didn't have "true 1080p w/o HDMI".
Well, nor surpising at all, the stuff from the ps3 fanboy camp was hooey. I can tell NO difference on my 1080p set from my elite hooked up via HDMI or my other 360 hooked via component.
The 120 gb hdd isn't any biggie...already upgraded all the other 360's in the house with those, so the only advantage I have found with the Elite was the color...matches my AV setup better then white, and the fact that it's one small cable for Audio and Video rather then 5.

What about doing VGA cable -> VGA/DVI adapter and a DVI -> HDMI adapter? I know it would still be analog, but it would get you your HDMI and it MIGHT output 1080p resolutions since it thinks its the VGA cable.

@6, this should work, but again this is analog.

Not sure what this does exactly, but if it's a component+audio to hdmi converter AND it costs way less than the $250 gefen one, then it would be interesting, assuming they don't limit the input end to just the xbox360 connector.

Your an idiot, they don't make vga to dvi adapters. They only make dvi to vga adapters. And THOSE only work on computers (or any device I suppose) that has a DVI-I output
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface
They DO, however, make analog to digital converters that convert vga to dvi and cost over 200 DOLLARS, but I'm SURE that's not what you were talking about. And even if you COULD do that I'm pretty sure plugging a DVI to HDMI adapter in there wouldn't work.

Well I have a VGA to DVI adapter. And it is that way round and not the other way. It is the same as you can't get USB to USB just USB to MiniUSB. But if you know where to look you can.
So I support the proposition that your sir are indeed the idiot

They should put a HDMI port on the HD DVD drive. Problem solved.

Has anyone confirmed that the socket on the xbox is indeed analogue only?
Seeing as pretty much every video card on the market has digital out, that can double as analogue out via an adapter, it's fairly reasonable to assume that this adapter is doing the same thing.
In fact we know that at least SOME of the adapter is capable of Digital because some of us use it for their optical out.
I don't think it's much of a stretch that MS is milking the Elite for the moment, but we'll see a full digital pipline in the near future.

This can work but won't work as well as a regular HDMI connection because of the analog/digital issues.
"It won't work with HD DVD output, you need a true HDCP-compliant HDMI port to get past the DRM built into every HD DVD sold. This is why your component cables, which are perfectly capable of outputing a 1080p signal, don't."
Wrong. HDCP is controlled by the ICT flag, and the ICT flag is disabled on all HDDVD discs (for now). The reason you can't get 1080p over component is because _YOUR_TV_ doesn't support it. There are sets that accept 1080p over component.
There are solutions out there including AC receivers and assorted equipment that will take analog component inputs and upconvert it to an HDMI output. Those receivers are pricey for now (maybe 600 or so) but some have been in the $400 neighborhood. These won't be HDCP compliant "enough" for ICT protected media but nothing uses ICT.
The $200 question (estimated price of this cable) is whether this device would allow me to upscale DVDs, which is disallowed over component but not HDMI or VGA. I'd be skeptical but not enough to say "impossible".

Okay #10 and #11. Why don't you send me the link to your VGA OUTPUT to DVI INPUT adapter NOT CONVERTER and I will shut up. Otherwise, why don't you lay out some FACTS before you just call people idiots, idiot.
BTW, a CONVERTER is an actual box or device that takes in an analog signal and converts it to digital similar to what #8 posted. And JUST LIKE #8 it costs TRIPLE FIGURES. VERY MUCH DIFFERENT than those cheap little adapters that you buy in stores. God I wish people online would get some f*in sense before they post.

This is not some magic Xbox 360 HDMI converter cable merely a retractable HDMI cable with HDMI on both ends it is a white, Xbox 360 HDMI cable - the item is white it is for the Elite console only - you can find the original information for this on http://www.teamxtender.com/. Look at the concept picture and then at any retractable cable you have, it is the same sort of thing. I guess when websites that should know better say what they think it is it is easy to believe them, but in this case they are wrong.

#15, chill man.. it exists. It even comes included in this 360 vga cable kit, a vga to dvi adapter, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't include it in this kit if it was useless! http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10087761&catid=
My question is however, can this adapter allow upconverting with the HD DVD player? I know component won't upconvert, but VGA will, but what about VGA-DVI.. would it still allow the upconverting to take place? And would it allow it all the way up to 1080p (in theory)?
I ask because I just bought a Sharp Aquos and want to use the HD DVD player with my white XBOX360, but also would love it if it would upconvert my old DVD's, as this TV does not have a VGA port, but does have the HDMI's and DVI's and the components of course.

Martin is RIGHT. A DVI connector is capable of carrying Digital AND analog signals. All a VGA to DVI adapter does is light up the analog pins on a DVI connector. This is so you can connect an analog signal from a VGA port to a device that has a DVI input port that supports analog input in addition to digital. Ever seen a DVI cable? Look at it closely - one part is just regular pins - this is the digital side. The other part has what looks like a plus sign with pins in each of the four corners. Thats the analog side. The cable can carry both if needed but can't make digital out of analog. If you then connect the HDMI->DVI cable to a DVI cable with only analog signals, it connects only to the digital pins - so there will be no connection. Martin is the only dude here that knows what he's talking about. I do this IT crap for a living - I'm telling you there is no way to connect a digital signal to an analog port. Next time listen to people that know what they're talking about.
