WRUP: let's count edition

Boys and girls, today's edition of What Are You Playing is brought to you by the number 4. Can you count to 4? Sure, I knew you could. What special things can we learn about the number 4 today. Let's see. 4, as in the number of players allowed in Halo 3's online co-op. 4, as in the number of cases of beer and/or Red Bull and/or tacos you will need to fuel your upcoming Halo 3 binge. 4, as in the minimum number of days you'll need to call in "sick" in order to maximize your enjoyment of Halo 3. 4, as in the number of days left until the release of Halo 3. See, learning can be fun.

Unfortunately, 4 is also the number of days that most of us won't be playing Halo 3. In other words, everyone but a select few (both sanctioned and unsanctioned by MS) will have to find something else to play over the weekend. So, what will you be playing this weekend, neighbor?

WRUP: mopping up edition

Well folks, here we are writing up the first WRUP of September 2007. In a mere eighteen days, Halo 3 will be gracing our Xbox 360 disc trays, where it will likely stay for the foreseeable future. That means we have just shy of three weeks to finish up all those other Xbox 360 games that are sitting on the shelf. Time to wrap up Oblivion, time to run through BioShock a second time (those little sisters don't stand a chance this time), and time to put all those Xbox Live Arcade games to bed. What games do you have to finish before September 25th? Regardless, as always, we must ask: what will you be playing this weekend?

WRUP: take your pick edition

With so many games coming out this week, and a handful of demos too, 360 gamers have a lot from which to choose. The choice for us is still the same honestly, as we just can't get enough BioShock (though we may slip in a little Puzzle Fighter, time permitting). With great summer releases few and far between, it's been fairly easy to guess what everyone should be playing every week, but this week's deluge of titles (golf, racing, action, rpg, etc.) presents a challenge. As such, we're just going to come right out and ask: what will you be playing this weekend?

WRUP: family time edition

We spend a lot of time here at X3F reporting on games that require hours of isolation from loved ones. We more or less direct our readership to dedicate their precious hours to solitary gaming endeavors. Sure, you might be connected to Xbox Live with other gamers, but what about the flesh-and-blood splicers people right behind you, begging for the tiniest morsel of your Adam attention? It is for those people that we write this week's WRUP. So, please, make an effort to spend some time with your Big Daddy and Little Sister* this weekend. We know they would appreciate it.

We ask you to look deep inside yourself as we ask, what will you be playing this weekend?

WRUP: calm before the storm edition

Everyone relaxed? Good. As you sit there (relaxing, remember) staring at your fat wallet, you should probably be aware of the storm that's approaching. Starting next week with BioShock (unless you win it from us of course), the torrent of Xbox 360 releases begins. BioShock, Blue Dragon, Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, TimeShift, and of course, Halo 3. That is just a tiny sample of the games that are headed our way in the coming weeks and months (let's not even get started on the Rock Band bundle). Sure, maybe you're rich and you can afford them all, but answer us this: how the hell could you even play them all? There just isn't enough time. So, again, get nice and relaxed. Enjoy staring at that fat wallet. This may well be your last chance.

Oh, and, as always, what will you be playing this weekend?

WRUP: total destruction edition

If you haven't played the Stranglehold demo by now, we'd be bold enough to venture that you've missed out. By all accounts here at X3F, the game is a blast (quite literally). Filled with liberal amounts of death and destruction, it's pretty much an action gamer's dream. As our own Dustin Burg put it, if this level of destruction (nearly everything can be physically obliterated) were in Gears of War 2, he could die a happy man. Of course, he'd probably like to live long enough to play it first. If it's not Stranglehold (or even if it is), we have to ask, as usual, what are you playing this weekend?

WRUP: so sad and lonely edition

Despite the fact we had accepted that it would happen eventually, the loss of a console has taken its toll. We're angry and confused. We've been short with our friends and family. The other day, we stooped to playing Gamecube to dull the pain. It didn't work. We miss all of our dear online friends. The 360 community rug has been viciously been pulled out from under us. Honestly, we're not sure what to do next. But don't worry about us, for it is you that's important. Besides, two out of three X3F bloggers still have working consoles, and two out of three ain't bad. So, as always we must ask, what will you be playing this weekend?

WRUP: perspective edition

Perhaps you've taken the time to download and play the Dynasty Warriors: Gundam demo that appeared on Xbox Live Marketplace yesterday. Perhaps you haven't. We're going to go out on a limb here and suggest that you take the time to do so. Not because it's a good game necessarily. No, not for that. Instead, we suggest you give it a go for a little perspective. DW: Gundam serves as an interesting example of current generation gaming. It's big, flashy, and there are lots of characters on the screen, but it's still the same game you've played 18 times already.

Now that you've had a chance to let that soak in, take a deep breath and tell us: what will you be playing this weekend?

WRUP: play Bomberman already edition

After a one week hiatus -- induced by the delirium of E3 -- What Are You Playing is back. We couldn't imagine a better "welcome home" present than Bomberman Live on Xbox Live Arcade. If you haven't tried out Hudson's new multiplayer title -- a return to the series' roots -- you owe it to yourself to do so. It really is a blast (pun hilariously intended). Hell, even our own Gears of War-aholic, Dustin Burg, has picked it up. Give it a go and see what all of the retro gamers have been raving about. We think you'll be glad you did.

That's not to say that's all we'll be playing this weekend though, so we must ask (as always), what are you playing this weekend?

WRUP: road to E3 edition

This is it folks, the last Friday before the first kinder, gentler E3. For most, gaming plans will go unchanged. For a select few, a weekend full of travel means that portable gaming time is nigh. Still others will ditch games entirely, opting instead to obsessively watch trailers of games they want to see at E3. And yet others will madly play the prequels to upcoming E3 darlings, desperately willing them to magically blossom into the next iteration (no matter how hard we try, we can't get Halo 2 to morph into Halo 3). Yes, the weekend before E3 is something like Christmas Eve for gamers, and indications are high that we have been very nice this year.

So, how will you whet your appetite for E3 this weekend?

WRUP: turn out the lights edition

Despite this week's torrent of new releases, one game stands out from the pack. We are of course talking about the latest from Starbreeze, The Darkness. Yes, the verdict is in, and the critics are taking a shine to the gruesome first person shooter. We're also getting the thumbs up from our resident Achievement Whore, which is usually a good sign. That's not to say there aren't other great options this weekend either (Overlord comes to mind). Yes, it seems that Microsoft's year-long wallet-draining conspiracy is still in full force. We shudder at the thought of the upcoming holiday gaming season (which seems to be starting in August for crying out loud).

Will you be delving into The Darkness this weekend, or do you have other plans?

WRUP: lazy summer edition

Well, kiddies, it's officially summer now. It's time to look forward to heat, picnics, Hollywood schlock, and days by the pool. Of course, for gamers, there's no better way to beat the heat than to stay inside and play some games, right? Here's the best part, with the right video games you can simulate the Great Outdoors. For instance, have you ever wondered what all those bugs in the grass are doing all day? If Band of Bugs is a realistic indication (and we have no reason to think it isn't), they are constantly at war. See, video games can be a useful educational tool. So, what will you be learning playing this weekend?

(Seriously though, why not go outdoors for old-fashioned analog entertainment?)

WRUP: retro crap and Gears of War edition

It's time once again for us to ask our readers what they will be playing this weekend. Taking a cue from some of our Fancast listeners, we thought it would be fun to share our weekend playlists as well.

WRUP: bye bye beta edition

360 fanboys, this is it. It's time to stock up on tacos, pizza, chips, soda, and whatever else you'll need to keep yourself glued to your Xbox 360. Yes, the end of the Halo 3 beta is nigh (this Sunday to be specific). The weeks have just flown by, haven't they? We've spent many hours owning n00bs and watching n00bs employ HAXX and CHEETZ to score kills on us. We've sampled new weapons (lolololololol) and tried out fancy new equipment. Many of us have even made it into unauthorized custom games. Whatever you like to do in the beta, this is your last shot. Will you go out in a blaze of ownage, or will you be owned yourself?

Oh, and in case Halo isn't your thing, what will you be playing this weekend?

WRUP: magical combat on wheels edition

What's this? An edition of WRUP that's not about the Halo 3 beta? Wha? That's right folks, there are actually some noteworthy new games out this week that may just pull you away from the beta. On one hand we have the simulation-heavy driving of Forza Motorsport 2, and on the other we have the unique magical combat of Shadowrun. We know for a fact that one of our writers has officially forsaken the Halo 3 beta for the team dynamics of Shadowrun. Will you do the same, or do you have even bolder plans for the weekend? The question, as always, is: what will you be playing this weekend?
