Xbox 360 sees 260% boost in UK sales

ChartTrack, courtesy of MCV, has revealed that the Xbox 360 received a 260% increase in UK sales two weeks ago. The sales spike is attributed to the UK introduction of the Xbox 360 Elite and price cuts given to every tier of the Xbox 360 product line. Almost as impressive, sales of the system during the following week only dropped by 20%. Unfortunately, ChartTrack hasn't released any concrete sales numbers for the Xbox 360, but we're willing to bet that a 260% increase represents quite a few consoles. Microsoft expects another sales boost when the Master Chief makes his farewell performance later this month.

MS mistakenly ships 20K American 360s to the UK?

While not the most reliable of sources, an employee of Game, one of the UK's major gaming retailers, claims that Microsoft has shipped 10-20,000 American Premium Xbox 360s to the UK by mistake. The problem became apparent when the employee, known only as King Antonius, received a returned Xbox 360. It turns out that the returned unit was an American console, and thus had an incompatible power cord for the UK. A quick check of the remaining Premium 360 stock revealed that all the Premium consoles at King Antonius' store were American. Apparently this is a widespread issue.

While we can't verify the authenticity of the claims, we'd suggest that our UK readers check the contents of their Xbox 360 box before leaving the store.

UK to get Halo 3 Xbox 360 for 279 GBP

Following the announcement of this week's European Xbox 360 price cut, Microsoft has just announced that the army green colored Halo 3 Xbox 360 will be available in the UK and retail for 279 GBP. The Halo 3 console will be available September 26th (Europe's Halo 3 release date) and will include all the same features / goodies as the Halo 3 console in the US including the spiffy paint job, play and charge pack, 20GB HDD and HDMI input. The console's 279 GBP price tag will be a tad more expensive than this Friday's newly price dropped and comparable Premium 360 which will retail for 249 GBP. So, an extra 30 GBP to upgrade to the Halo 3 Xbox 360 and its adorable gamer pictures or sticking with the cheaper Premium ... decisions, decisions.

UK deal: wireless adapter for £25

We received a nice deal for all of our UK readers today. Great Universal is apparently having a promotion where any £45 purchase receives a £20 discount. As fate would have it, the Xbox 360 wireless adapter happens to cost exactly £45. The offer comes via Hot UK Deals, which also provided us with our most recent UK deal, so we imagine the offer is legit. All that is required is a £45 purchase and the application of a discount code (D9) at checkout. Of course, there is a small caveat: it may take as long as 7 weeks to ship. Still, the savings are fairly substantial if you have the patience.

If any UK readers give this a try, let us know how it went.

360 rocking in the UK

This week's sales numbers are in for the UK, and the 360 is still topping the charts. The 360 currently has games in four of the top five spots. In order, they are: Lego Star Wars II (#1), Dead Rising (#2), Saints Row (#3), and Test Drive Unlimited (#5). Granted, LSWII is a multiplatform title, but you can bet Microsoft is nothing but pleased with these numbers. Any of our UK readers rocking one of these great 360 games?

UK Dead Rising fans chop til they drop

Capcom is luring UK gamers to the chopping mall with a Dead Rising web-game called "Chop Til You Drop." Mince 100 zombies for the chance to win one of 5 t-shirts or, better yet, 200 for a shot at a Sony HDTV. Unfortunately, the rest of the world isn't eligible to win, although you can still waste an hour of office time mindlessly hurling tiny meat cleavers at the living dead. Capcom should throw a quick promo title on XBLA and take this mini-madness global.

HD-DVD bundles, pricing rumored

Big buzz from "retail sources" concerning the Xbox 360 External HD-DVD Drive in Europe. From GamesIndustry.biz:

Retail sources have indicated to GamesIndustry.biz that Microsoft is currently planning to price the standalone HD-DVD drive at GBP 199 (293 Euro) [$370] and to package it with two HD-DVD movies. The sources also suggested that Microsoft will bundle the Premium console and next-generation movie player together for under GBP 400 (589 Euro) [$746] – and that the price could even be as low as GBP 375 (552 Euros) [$700].

For some reason these unofficial numbers have desperate Sony fanboys in a bold mood. I'm not sure why. The bundle prices mentioned both undercut the premium PS3 in Europe (Subtracting the usual 25% price hike paid by our cousins across the pond, this would indicate the stand-alone drive will sell for less than $300 in the US, including two movies. Personally I predict $200-$250). And of course, the millions of people who either don't have a TV capable of taking advantage of HD-DVD or don't feel like shelling out for an "unproven" format still have a choice with MS. So even if these "high" prices hold, the 360 is still in good position to do battle with the PS3 in Europe this Christmas. Oh yeah, I forgot -- the PS3 is skipping Christmas in Europe. Guess it won't be much of a battle after all.

If you need a refresher course on why HD-DVD is better than Blu-Ray anyway (cough...VC1 codec...cough), see here.

Hell's Highway demo available in UK?

Reader Ciaran reports that the demo for Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway is available in the UK. Can anyone else confirm? And if so, how is it?

By the way, UK gamers can also download something called the "The Cuban Brothers Game With Fame Trailer." That's cool, but I'm not sure about the "fame" part. The only Cuban brothers I know are Fidel and Raul.

MS drops price of Core System in UK

Microsoft has repeatedly said that they won't be cutting the price of the 360, but then, reader Lorul2 never thought he'd have "three kids and dead end job." Things change, and they obviously have in the UK where GamesIndustry.biz confirms the Xbox 360 Core System is now selling for the official price of £199 off of £209. That's converts to a drop of about $19. No word on a similar price cut for other SKUs or markets. Will this invigorate interest in the lowly core system?

[Thanks Lorul2]

MSFT promises more HD-DVD info at E3

In an interview with Germany's Spiegel Online, Microsoft's executive in charge of the European market for the company's Xbox gaming consoles, Chris Lewis, talks about the Xbox 360, HD-DVD and, of course, Blu-ray.

When asked about the anticipated HD-DVD player add-on, Lewis says, "We'll say a little bit more about it at E3. It will give people access to HD DVD." When asked about the console's omission of HDMI, and its possible inclusion in whatever form the add-on takes, he said, "All I can say to you is -- there are interesting developments in the pipeline. We will make sure that the HD-DVD-peripheral device will meet all the requirements for consumers to enjoy high-definition DVD playback."

What does he think if Sony's competing Blu-ray format? "Blu-ray right now reminds us of another technology from Sony: Betamax." Oh schnap! Sony does have a long list of failed proprietary formats, not the least of which is the currently floundering UMD format used in the PSP. Will consumers pony up for HD movie capabilities in their console, or is it really all about choice?
