X3F hands-on: Eternal Sonata

If you're crafty enough to find it, an Eternal Sonata demo is now available on Xbox Live Marketplace. We downloaded the demo yesterday and took it for a spin. First thing's first, the game is very pretty. While the geometry is actually very simple, the art style and the cel shaded characters are just jaw-dropping. The animation is well done and even the voice acting is decent (the demo features full English dialogue and menus). The big question is: how does it play? Read on to find out.

Eternal Sonata will be instantly familiar to Japanese RPG fans. Lots of bright colors, cute characters, and plenty of combat. The Eternal Sonata demo tasks you with fighting your way through a few monster-infested areas, exploring a town, and destroying a (relatively easy) boss. Town exploration, as you might expect, is almost exactly as it has been in every RPG since the NES era. Enter town, talk to people, enter people's homes, steal their healing items, rinse, repeat.

What most RPG fans want to know is how the combat works. We're happy to report that Eternal Sonata brings something fresh to turn-based combat. Rather than simply queuing up a set of actions and watching all of your characters do the dirty work, you actually take control of each member of your party. Once in control, you have a few options like using items, attacking, or unleashing a special move. What makes Eternal Sonata so interesting is that each character has a certain amount of time to move. Once you start moving, your time quickly ticks down (about 5 seconds or so). You job is to cram as much action into those five seconds as possible.

This real time element presents you with some new things to think about. Should you attack the giant enemy or go for the weaker enemy that isn't as far away? Since it will take less time to reach the weaker enemy, you'll have more time to attack once you reach it. The more attacks you chain together in one turn, the more your Echo meter builds up. As the meter gets higher, you can unleash more devastating versions of your magic attacks. So, you are presented with another choice, do you use magic attacks every turn, or do you chain combos together so that one character can unleash a particularly powerful spell? It's these touches that make combat really enjoyable and not a chore. Of course, you can avoid fights if you wish, as all enemies can be seen on the overworld map. They will follow you, though, so be sure not to be ambushed from behind, as it will give your enemies the first strike during the battle.

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our time with Eternal Sonata. RPG fans looking for some respite from the spate of shooters and action games available on the Xbox 360 should be very pleased with Namco Bandai's latest offering when it finally reaches the States. Here's hoping the storyline can live up to the gameplay.

1. It's ok and all, not buying it though....

2. Something else I thought was interesting that wasn't touched upon is that idea of light versus dark the game uses.

In battle, if your character is in the shade, his or her special attacks will be different than they are when they're in the light (sun or moon, doesn't seem to matter). I used this to my advantage pretty often.

This also affects enemies, although the biggest change was probably those little onion guys. In the sun they're tiny and weak, in the shade they're massive and quite a bit more powerful.

I was happy with it. Mostly typical RPG stuff (although well done), but the system is decidedly lacking in that.

3. If you downloaded this demo be sure to leave it idle at the start screen. When the music fades out you will be treated to a cutscene. There are 3 different cutscenes you can view if you leave the demo idle. The game is very beautiful, the voice acting in the cutscenes isn't that great though.

4. @ ANt

Wow, did you get up on the wrong side of bed today, or what?

Personally, I'm looking forward to this game. I may just have to get "crafty" and test drive this early myself.

5. If you go through the options, this seems to be able to support some sort of multiplayer...

6. FYI, If you manage to LVL Up twice prior to facing the boss, you can defeat it rather easily. I didn't see anywhere to spend gold though; unfortunate since I could have used a few more Peach Cookies.

7. I can only seem to be level 5 by the end of the demo. *pout*

*goes for another run-through, despite having killed everyone every time before*

8. Did anyone here play the demo on their fake Japanese account? I went back and played it on my regular account, and couldn't believe it was all in English. I wonder when the demo is getting a North American release.

And yeah, I'd say the demo was amazing, and I'm looking forward to it more than Blue Dragon now. My only problem was that when I was in the town the game kept kind of pausing for a brief second, but I'm sure that'll be patched up before the real release.

9. Where the heck do you find it in the marketplace? I would have thought I would have needed a "Japan" account but the last comment made me think otherwise.

10. I got the demo, and didn't like it. But I'm not at all a JRPG fan anyways.

I loved the art, the graphics, but the grotesque running animation of the main characther, with no transition animation from full speed to stop takes away all the magic.

Also the fixed camera and lots of invisible walls are unacceptable.

The gamepaly is pretty repetive: Walk arround, talk to the (very few) people arround that most of the time talks nonsense or gives humongous text tutorials about the battle system, get into battle, rinse and repeat over and over and over...

It felt like playing a 20 year old game with new (and purrty!) clothes.

The battle system is the other high point besides the art/graphics. Pretty good in mixing turn based and action, not as boring as the traditional "board" feeling of FFs.

Another good point is the music. Is soothing and inspiring at the same time. The battle music is SO much better than the majority of JRPG's battle music!

Overall I was very curious and open minded about this game and demo just threw a bucket of cold water on my enthusiasm.

Not that's anything broken with the demo. It's just that it is only one more (very well done and very beautiful) 20 year old JRPG.

One too many JRPG clichés for this old man here.

11. Ken- follow the instructions. You do have to go to the Japanese marketplace to download it, I was just surprised that it was in English for me, but that was when I played it on my regular account, not sure how it works if you play it on your Jap account.

And as for T Ghost
"Also the fixed camera and lots of invisible walls are unacceptable"

I don't see how. The fixed camera gives it a more cinematic feel, and this is a RPG, you dont really need to adjust the camera much, it's not an action game. And I'm fine with having to stick with the paths, being able to explore wherever gets a bit frustrating as it becomes tougher to find hidden items. Now it's less of a hassle, and there's still plenty of branching pathways at least.

"The gamepaly is pretty repetive: Walk arround, talk to the (very few) people arround that most of the time talks nonsense or gives humongous text tutorials about the battle system, get into battle, rinse and repeat over and over and over..."

I hate to break this to you, but you can say that about ANY game. oh man Halo is just shoot, reload, shoot reload. There's a lot more depth there than that. And the tutorials were pretty short, especially by RPG standards.

12. I have an NTSC-U (North American) XBOX360. I have a Japanese XBL Account. I'm seeing menus and dialogs in English.

How do I actually get them into Japanese? I tried setting Locale/Language to Japanese for my Console. Neither worked.

Help, the English dubbed voice is horrible.

13. This needs to sell well for people like squareenix to start making games for 360 and so other rpgers will take notice. Good rpg sale means good 360 sales.

14. I was level 6 by the time I reached the boss - the battle was rather easy, I didn't even have to heal anyone in my party. I revisited the same areas quite a few times engaging in battles to increase my level; luckily monsters re-spawn after you leave the screen.

I've definitely enjoyed the demo, although I wish it was a bit longer. Combat is refreshing, and the graphical style is incredibly beautiful. Definitely looking forward to this game - a must buy for me. I'm ready for another RPG, Enchanted Arms only lasted about 50 hours.

15. @12

I have an NTSC-J (Asian) XBOX360. I have a Japanese XBL Account. I'm seeing menus and dialogs in Japanese.

How do I actually get them into English? I tried setting Locale/Language to English for my Console. Neither worked.

Help, the Japanese original voice is incomprehensible.
