This Week in HD DVD: where's the hyphen edition

You've come to expect it from weeks previous, so we won't beat around the bush. There are no HD DVD releases this week, sorry guys. Writing these weekly updates is getting a little painful, but we'll just have to be strong and hope for a brighter future. You'll also notice that there is a little change in this week's update as it pertains to the correct way to write HD DVD. Yup, we've finally given into your complaints ... we removed the hyphen between HD and DVD. If the official site for HD DVD says no hyphen, then who are we to add it? From now on This Week in HD DVD will be hyphenless, guaranteed!
  • HD DVD Movie Releases: March 20th
  • No HD DVD releases this week.

1. Can you change it to "This Month in HD DVD" in stead? Or at least put the hypen back so we have something to comment about.

2. Dang, maybe I should have put a hypen in my "in stead".

3. Guys - I love my 360 as much as the next guy but Blu-ray has already won. The movies look just as good these days, the players are coming down in prices, and there is far more selection.

HD-DVD really is just one meeting at Universal away from dying completely...

4. And as a follow up to my last comment, this week Blu-ray releases are:

- Eragon
- Chicken Little
- Finding Neverland
- Big Fish
- Rocky Balboa

So, 2 day-and-dates and 3 library titles (Big Fish - woot).

5. Thos 2 format sucks. Either leave one of stop with that.

Saturday I went to a Sony Style Store and got extremelly underwhelmed by the whole 1080p thing by watching 50" and 60" 1080p top of the line Sony LCD HDTV's playing Blu-Ray.

Really don't understand what's the fuss about 1080p when those big top of the line displays can't show any major improvement over what my old 36" trinitron and DVD can give me at home right now.

Seriously... :S

6. Why do you have to apologize to the 360? I wonder how much crow MS would have to swallow to make a Blu Ray external drive.

However, that being said, I'm not too enthralled with either format. I just bought my HD-DVD player to play movies so i don't have to use my 360's drive.

7. This marks the last week before the HD DVD releases start piling up again. I haven't minded the wait, as I've spent the time off saving up for the titles that start pouring out starting next week, and by buying already-released HD DVDs that I just haven't picked up until now.

Can't WAIT until next week! "Children of Men" will be mine! :)

8. To those who say "Look at all of the BD releases, HD-DVD is dead," you're being very short sighted. BD has three exclusive studios - Sony, Fox, and Disney. While they all have some good movies, most of the ones being released now aren't that great (Casino Royale being a MAJOR exception to that statement). Notice that other companies, Paramount and Warner Brothers in particular, have not released any movies on either format in quite some time. Also, if you look at sales data for movies that are available on both formats, you'll notice that the sales are very similar -- which isn't good news for BD, considering they have a huge PS3 base to potentially draw from.

This battle isn't going to end anytime soon, and I suspect that Disney (and perhaps Fox) are more likely to follow WB and Paramount and start releasing for both formats (potentially with WBs dual format disk, although I think it's kinda dumb...). Why would they leave money on the table?

9. I think all studio's but Universal have given up on the format. It's still too early to say that HD-DVD has lost the next-gen format battle. However, Blu-Ray is releasing a lot more movies than HD-DVD and I am so glad I didn't buy the HD-DVD add-on now. Sony's studio power is really showing this time around. UMD failed only because it was on the PSP and that tiny little screen. Even UMD has a better selection of movies than HD-DVD.

10. MS can't make an external BR drive, if I'm not mistaken Sony invented it.

11. wow no hd dvds out this week i saw this coming

12. #8 your forgetting that just because movies arent "good" doesnt necessarily mean they dont sell. take for example Stomp the Yard...thats a mediocre movie but the box office shows sales in excess of 60 Million, a performance which will most likely translate to good sales on blu ray. and as far as quality titles go sony is also releasing plenty of top rated movies such as big fish, casino royale, etc.

when you look at sales, The Departed a movie that came out in both formats sold 7000 on blu ray compared to only 3000 on HDDVD.

personally i havent noticed a huge diffrence between these formats and DVD but the only movie i have supposedly is a bad transfer, ill be getting about 12 blu ray movies in the mail this week and i guess ill finally see what all the fuss is about

13. "when you look at sales, The Departed a movie that came out in both formats sold 7000 on blu ray compared to only 3000 on HDDVD."
I'm not sure where you got your numbers for, but assuming they're correct, that's even more reason that BD is flopping. Sony keeps touting their PS3 install base for BD -- so they have over a million players in people's homes, yet can only sell 7,000 movies? On the other hand, there's "only" about 200,000 HD-DVD players, and they manage to sell 3000? Shouldn't the BD version be outselling the HD-DVD version by more than 4,000 copies?

Sony likes to say that the format war is over, but it hasn't even begun.

As for not seeing the difference between DVD and HD-DVD (or BD), I think it depends on the screen size. I have a front projector setup, and I definitely notice the difference. Not sure if you'd see a difference on a 40" TV though. That's the major limiting factor for each format IMHO -- the majority of people can't take advantage of either of them. :(
