Video: NBA Street Homecourt 360 Vs. PS3

Sure, storytelling is important to game development, but let's face it, many of us are graphics whores. The draw of a beautifully rendered game is undeniable. A graphically immersive game will cause many to overlook faults that would otherwise stand out (see Gears of War). As such, graphical ability is a strong bullet point for almost any console. Case in point, we found a comparison video of NBA Street Homecourt for the Xbox 360 and PS3. First thing's first, no matter what platform it's on, Homecourt is a nice looking game. Period. It looks great. That being said, we'd say the 360 version is actually a little sharper. If we had to put our finger on it, we'd say the 360 version looks just a little bit "glossier." Granted, we have no way of knowing what sort of setup GameTrailers used to make the video, but we'd have to give the slight edge to the 360 (as did Game Informer).

Hit the "read" link to watch the video (it's HD, so it'll take a while to buffer) and then come back and tell us what you think. Do graphics even matter? Given the feature disparity between the two consoles (rumble, Xbox Live, etc.) would you pick one over the other just because it looked better?

1. Admittedly, I am a graphics whore as well, but honestly, I could tell very little difference between the PS3 or X360, certainly not enough that couldn't be accounted for by a wide range of settings.

I'm also not a big sport game nut, but may just pick this one up as it looks gorgeous. Deciding factor for me as for which system to get it for, for this type of game, would be the achievement points only. Different games types, rumble plays a role, motion sensing, as does online multiplayer.

Regardless, very nice looking game.

2. Didn't we cover this already?

Some look better on 360, some look better on PS3. It depends on the Developer.
It isn't really an indication of which system is more powerful.

Basic Point Right Now is the two consoles are close graphically. In a Year lets do the Same comparison and see if the 360 is still holding up. I'm sure on Multi-platform Games they will continue to be Close, but we will have to wait and see.

3. LOLZ at teh PS3.

Posted at 7:51PM on Feb 20th 2007 by bigbrew

4. They both look amazing, I actually do NOT like the sharper trees at the start of the clip on the 360, I find those non-aliased edges distracting in games like Tiger Woods, etc., but it's likely there on the PS3 as well.

Which one would I buy, as a Wii, 360 and PS3 owner, and if this were my type of game? The one that I could play online with most of my friends, which would have me picking up the 360 version. The head start into the market, and the nice cost-to-performance of the 360 has made it the default console right now.

5. Sorry, I should clarify I mean 'Aliased Edges' on the 360 vesrion's trees being distracting. They are presented sharper than they would be at the distance they are supposed to be at.

This is certainly not exclusive to the 360, just something that I find distracting as the graphics of this games get more and more detailed, and more 'camera lens' techniques such as depth of field and focal length are used.

6. Slight? I think the 360 clearly blows away the PS3 and that's not the fanboy in my speaking either.

Take the video to 00:42 - 00:44 and look at the seating in the background. The 360 is much clearer. Also at 01:05 - 01:08, take a look at the fence in the background. The 360 shines with its AA.

Ok, that probably was the fanboy in my speaking.

7. "...Some look better on 360, some look better on PS3..."

Uh, which look better on the PS3?

Posted at 9:23PM on Feb 20th 2007 by NeoteriX

8. Unless there was a marked difference between the two (which, to my eye at least the difference is negligible) it always boils down to features; thanks to achievements/live that means I'll be buying the 360 version of most every multi-platform game I suppose...

@Scott, I don't think this article was meant to be yet another rehash of the which system is superior argument, rather a graphics vs features debate; at least that's how the last question seemed to frame it. Interesting use of caps by the way. ;)

9. Graphics are important when they look that similar it really doesn't matter. What does matter is games and online services. And I would take Halo, Gears, and Xbox Live, over Resistance, MGS4, and Playstation Online anyday.

Posted at 9:44PM on Feb 20th 2007 by Daniel

10. I have a PS3 as well, and so far, there's been absolutely no reason to buy a version of a game for it over the 360 version.

The 360 version will have achievements, better online support and features, use the better controller, rumble support, and actually have people to play with online, all of which renders the PS3 versions of these games essentially worthless in the big picture.

For a consumer that could only afford one of the two consoles, the 360 is still the better deal for gaming.

The PS3 comes in 1st and 2nd of the "top 5 gadgets not to buy" (per smartmoney.com) by first being a Blu-ray player and 2nd being itself. That's what I find the most hilarious. And then I smack myself in the head for having it.

11. @NeoteriX
Uhh... Oblivion (Not actually released yet).
There were others, I don't keep a list of which ones are better on 360 and which on PS3. But there are some both ways, you just need to read on non-biased sites. I'm not trying to Fanboy one way or the other just stating what I have read here and there.

@AoE
Yeah, I get the Strange use of CAPS from Programming. I Tend to Make my Variable Names as Such:
ReadFromBarcodeOnComm1
So it kind of became a habit that is very hard to break.

@Arno
Funny... Very Funny. But I thought right between 00:00 and 00:01 was the Best!

12. i have all 3 of these so called "next-gen" systems .. i comment on all 3 fanboy sites and ocassionally on joystiq. Call me a Video Game Fundamentalist Mormon if you will .. but facts are facts .. games beat hardware .. practice makes perfect .. Dual is more than Solo .. gimmicks are fads .. more is always better (less is more) .. there is living and there is luxury .. dont beat a dead horse trojan or otherwise.

13. oh one more thing .. Def Jam: Icon is going to suck on both systems ;)

Posted at 11:27PM on Feb 20th 2007 by WhackMushroom

14. @Scott
tell me if im wrong, but isn't a patch comming out for the 360 to make the graphics the same as the ps3, aside from the fact that, yea oblivion on the ps3 has less lag

Posted at 11:44PM on Feb 20th 2007 by Irwin

15. Looks the same to me. I'll be grabbing the PS3 version.

Posted at 12:01AM on Feb 21st 2007 by Stewie

16. You would have to be blind not to realize that the 360 version looks better after watching the comparison video. The 360 looks better period.

name 1 game that looks better on PS3 and
the XBOX 360 is a little sharper

18. I can't comment on this game but I was in BB yesterday picking up crack(down) (must...stop...playing...go...to...sleep) and I played a little Motorstorm. While it looked good, I don't think it looks a whole lot better than Test Drive Unlimited AND NOTHING like the E3 BS renders.

Posted at 7:12AM on Feb 21st 2007 by ElTiante

19. What? AGAIN? REALLY?

It's the same Game on both consoles. Though they may not be 100% graphically identical they are so close that it won't affect the game experiance either way. Though interesting to see how they differ it makes zero affect on the games and/or the game sales. It's like comapring a game on a 16bit console sega/nintendo and sega having a slightly different blue colour for the sky or something.

That being said... 360 FTW!!!! PS3 come down to an earth based price and maybe we can talk, until then go get more games.

Posted at 8:55AM on Feb 21st 2007 by Smokestorm

20. I remember just before E3'05 I was kind of like, "Well I'm a Sega Guy converted to a Xbox Guy." I was expecting to have the weakest console this time around. They hadn't announced the specs for the "Revolution" and we all knew the PS3 was going to be a big ass processing monster. I guess I can say that it's pretty sweet that we basically have a tie for 1st this time.

Xbox > PS2
Xbox > Wii
Xbox 360 = PS3
Pile of Shit on the ground > Wii
lol

In this video they are about the same or close enough. I bet neither band of fanboys could tell the difference w/out the labels for them to see which system was which.
