For those The politics of this announcement are interesting, as the next iteration of Guitar Hero will be developed by Neversoft instead of Harmonix. Harmonix, meanwhile, is working with MTV and Electronic arts on Rock Band. If Harmonix owns the rights to the Guitar Hero controller, it could mean Neversoft will have to develop a completely new one for Guitar Hero III. Throw in RedOctane's (and thus Activision's) legal battle with The Ant Commandos and it gets even more confusing.
Granted, GHIII is still a ways off, but we don't relish the idea of dishing out gargantuan sums of money every time a new music game hits.
Here's hoping the X-plorer will be compatible across the board.

Question is -- will Rock Band's reportedly wireless controller work with GH2/3, if RedOctane doesn't release one of their own...?

I wouldn't be surprised if the companies are playing nice on a standard for guitar controllers. I suspect that with Harmonix having co-designed the controller, and Activision/Red Octane taking over rights to the game, an agreement was reached for this sort of thing. The GH series will continue with its own fan base, while this Rock Band concept will be a whole separate deal. Besides, while a game could block out a certain controller (like GHII blocking out unofficial guitars), I don't think anyone could legally keep a game from SUPPORTING a current controller. So Harmonix could easily add in support for the GHII controller just to be helpful to their fans and there's nothing Activision could do about it if it did bother them. And since their subsidiary is the one manufacturing those controllers, they make money either way.

You posted this exactly an hour after you said you wouldn't post any GHII info in at least an hour.
