Game Informer's March issue's review of the cross platform, 1080p native basketball game NBA Street: Homecourt makes a comparison in the graphics department between the two consoles. They clearly state that while the game looks stunning regardless, the Xbox 360 edges out the PS3. Similar results can be found for the PS3 review of F.E.A.R. in the very same issue. So, those are two games that go in Xbox 360's favor, but we'll have to see how things go as future cross-platform games release. In most cases, the games will probably be nearly identical, and it will be up purely to your personal preference, give or take $200. What upcoming multi-platform games are you curious about the comparisons for?
[Thanks, Jonah]

Personally i really dont care which copy has 5 frames per second better or 50 more polygons per char.
I really just buy whichever version i feel like buying at the store. Just like i did with PS2/Xbox/GC, i'll do the same with PS3/360/Wii.
There were some games that were "superior" on xbox that i bought for PS2 and vice versa, unless its a drastic difference, a minor issue like "this game looks SLIGHTLY better on this console" is of no consequence to me.

I am suprised F.E.A.R looks better on the 360, since the 360 version was released some much earlier!

The two games that I want to compare head to head in graphcis are Gears and Metal Gear 4 (when it comes out). You can't really compare mulit-platform because they are just ported. Comparing two exclusive titles that are console sellers is how it has to be done.

Josh, also worth noting is that you can't compare two different games if you want to figure out which console is superior. That doesn't make any sense.
Gears and MGS will have completely different styles and artists and designs, etc.
You have to use the same game on both systems to get an impression of which system is better.
Have you ever done a benchmark? Or read about one? Or anything? Using two different games would be stupid.
And in response to JJ, XBLive is enough to make me buy any multi-platform game on 360 instead of PS3/Wii, but the Achievements don't hurt either.

Because the 360 has twice the RAM, and is much easier to program for, despite the fact that the PS3 MIGHT be a more powerful console, the majority of the multi-platform games will continue to look better on the 360. Most likely, developers will develop for the 360 (because it is easier) and then figure out how to shoe-horn it onto the PS3. The exceptions to this rule might be the games developed for the PS3 first. I guess we'll just have to wait until VF5 for the 360 comes out later this year.

I own both ps3 and 360.
There are some things you can't control for, such as the skill or effort of the developers. It may be the case that they put more effort into the 360 version because it has a larger user base.
It may be that the only way to determine which console is more "powerful" or has "better graphics" would be to look at many games over a period of time. Or if there is a cross platform game that is 1080p on ps3 but only 720p on 360.
Or maybe the 360's shaders and 512 MB of unified memory are better than ps3. We'll know over time.

Shouldn't be any surprise, the GPU and architecture of it are simply better on the 360. Unless developers stop trying to push the system because of the easy development tools, there's no reason that the 360 should ever lag behind the ps3 in graphical quality.

These obvious perception stories are a waste of time. The bloom lighting on the PS3 blows the shit out of the overdone bloom lighting on the 360. What it comes down to is the perception of the end user. If you like a game to look like reality, you play on the PS3 if you want a game to look like overexposed bullshit, then you play it on a 360. Notice that there isn't light emanating from the inside of people's heads on the PS3 version of Oblivion while on the 360 it appears that people are filled with a light source. Same issue. nVidia doesn't comprehend bloom effects or implement them as well as ATI does.

Tim, the comparison I mentionaed isn't between consoles it's between graphical beauty between 2 games. Gears of War is said to have the best graphics of any console game ever made so you could definitely take that statement and match Gears and MGS4. When MGS4 comes out you can then match it with Gears to see if that title still goes to Gears.
As far as console comparisons go, I personally would never buy a PS3 simply because I absolutely hate the controller and it doesn't have rumble. Nothing against the PS3 itself but the controller and the rumble are important to me so without even comparing games on each system the Xbox 360 is a better choice for me.

why are you people talking about comparing gears to mgs4, two totally different games?
1. gears wont be out for PS3.
2. mgs4 will be out for xbox 360 so we can compare.
now if both games were multiplatform, and say mgs4 looked just as good on xbox 360, we could declare xbox 360 the clear winner; but you cant go and compare different games, released at different times on different consoles.
this homecourt comparison is the one and only way you can truly compare a game, regardless of you thinking its a port or not.

360 ftw!! lol
meh...homecourt isnt a good game anyways...too over-the-top...nba street 1 n 2 were good...when it got to 3 and the one after that...it was all about being 30 to 69 player-heights above the rim doing impossible things with the ball over players that could only jump half that height to come down and pull an impossible dunk, slamming your forearms against the rim, magically not breaking them and then hanging onto the rim at a speed which would either screw up ur fingers (dislocate them), dislocate or disloge ur elbows/shoulders or break the rim resulting in you slamming into the ground which would finish with you with broken bones. right...and im supposed to play this and enjoy it? i wonder how much this game'll sell...it'll probably end up like ridge racer. LOL

Tr4iN,
How do you compare first gen to second gen titles on the two systems? Granted they're being released at the same time. There were no first gen title on the 360 that look remotely close to something like Resistance on the PS3. EA has put a lot more work into their development on the 360 due to the fact that they've had product on it for over a year.
Look at Fight Night 3 on both platforms, the detail of the fighters on the PS3 blows away the same title on the 360. While the audience shots on the 360 are leaps and bounds ahead of the PS3 audience shots. Again, I will bring up the bloom issue, on the 360 it looks like an overexposed piece of film and the PS3 looks like how your eyes would see it in real life.
Trying to compare things currently is a waste of time. Look at Doom3 on the original XBox, it looked fantastic compared to many initial launch titles on the 360.
Point is, it's too early to compare these things.

PS3 GPU = Overclocked Gf7800
X360 GPU= Evolved X1900
Look for any review on the net and you'll see that clearly X1900 > Gf7800.
It's been said a million times but apparently not that many people pay attention: Anybody who thinks thet PS3 'benefited' hardware-wise by launching a year later than X360 is simply wrong. The PS3 hardware was finalized even before the 360 launched. The only reason PS3 launched later was because of the Blu-Ray drive. The Cell processor could theoretically crunch more numbers than the Xenon, but GPU-wise, the X360 clearly beats the RSX (PS3 GPU), no surprises then that it looks better, if only marginally...

Tr4iN,
GoW was released about a year after the 360 was launched and MGS4 will be about the same. If Gears of War has raised the bar for graphics in games then games with great graphics will be compared to GoW...in a general sense. Remember the GoW vs Resistance debate? Graphics were compared even though they are two different games.

A game would have to be much inferior on the 360 to convince me to buy it for my PS3. I just don't like the DualSixAxxxxis. Someone needs to explain to Sony that the placement of their analog sticks is destroying gamer wrists. After years of playing with the DualShock and having wrist problems, using either the GC controller or the 360 made them all go away.
Honestly, when they announced the bannana controller I was excited, because it was designed to fix the bad ergonomics of the DualShock.
Anyone know if there's a 3rd party 360-style wireless controller for the PS3.

Both the PS3 and 360 have 512 or Ram.
It is just that the 360 has Unified 512 meaning it can be split up, say 256 System 256 Video.
The PS3 has 256 System and 256 Video.
Just thought you should know.
