Gamespy says good things about Crackdown

Crackdown seems to be the game everyone wants to figure out, leaving us to ask ourselves a bunch of questions. Can the game hold its own? Is the Halo 3 beta attached to it solely because it sucks so bad? Why is there no crack in Crackdown? We all got our hands on the demo and the truth is, we're thinking this game could be worth the $60 by itself. Now more good news comes from the Gamespy camp where they got to play a preview build of the game and it looks like they enjoy it. Gamespy says that the game isn't reinventing the wheel when it comes to sandbox games, but does things well enough to keep the experience fun, fresh and unique. Maybe it's leveling up of one's super powers or maybe it's just because we aren't forced to be thugs in the game. Whatever it may be, Gamespy goes out and says "this title is shaping up to be a solid purchase, Halo 3 beta invite or not" ... we really hope so. Read Gamespy's full preview after the jump.

[Thanks, Jonah]

1. That's GREAT news for the MS camp. Another top seller for their stable, and BTW the game kicks total A$$ and is a BLAST to play. Mind you I'm going on just the demo. The full game should be 100 times better!!

2. I just want to make it to the top of the giant skyscraper in the middle of town. :p

3. This game "doesn't reinvent the wheel," but it kicks Saints Row and GTA's butt up around their neck! The demo is FANTASTIC!

I can't wait to get this in my hands! I don't think I'm going to pre-order, though. I hope I'll be able to walk into Best Buy when they open and snag a copy w/ halo 3 invite.

Microsoft should have made a special edition ($70) that included the halo 3 key. What were they thinking!?! (Giving it away for free)

They must have a policy about charging for beta software.

4. "...maybe it's just because we aren't forced to be thugs in the game."

This is my major complaint with the GTA series. Maybe I'm a wuss, but I want to be a hero in video games. Not a prostitute-killing criminal.

Posted at 1:14PM on Feb 4th 2007 by Les

5. maybe its just me,
but i dont remember any missions where you specificly HAD to kill a prostitue over any of the 3 major games.

any yet, this is how so many people describe it.

look. If you kill prostitutes thats your own buisness, the game doesnt require it at any point in time that im aware of.

you cant blame sombody for giving you an option that you didnt have to take.

2 cents.

but back to crackdown.
the game blows.
it just happens to be the first open world game with co-op, so everybody ignores the fact that it blows.

when GTA and Saints row do Co-op on their next run, people might actually see that.

6. Who says you aren't a thug in Crackdown?

Posted at 1:35PM on Feb 4th 2007 by Jonah Falcon

7. actually, it's possible to get to the agency tower (the one in the middle of the lake, right?) in the demo. i think you need 4 star agility, though, and it takes a while, so the timer may start being your worst enemy. but it is possible, my roommate has done it several times.

Posted at 2:45PM on Feb 4th 2007 by oddworld

8. You really just need to be a level 3 in agility. Theres a whole near the garage in the keep you can go up though. It does take some pretty sweet jumps to pull off and you have to be really good at grabbing ledges to get going. Just level up to at least 3 stars in agility and try to make that last one near a checkpoint so you can just transport back to the checkpoint in the keep to save some time. It takes about 5 mins to get to the top of the tower once you're pretty good at it, though it took me about 20 the first time through.

9. I think I liked Crackdown better when it was called the Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.

10. "I think I liked Crackdown better when it was called the Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction."

Last time I can remember, could the Hulk drive cars or fire grenade launchers? Oh, that's right, that's a NO.

12. Crackdown = Best sandbox-game evar. D: My favorite thing, by far, is the vertical element. I've never had so much fun just going around scaling buildings.

14. Writing off Crackdown as just another GTA clone, just the first sandbox to have co-op, or just another thug game is really short changing the game on pre-concieved notions. Evaluate the game on the basis of its action...it's over the top and fun. For me, I hardly touched the vehicles. I could care less about driving around. I'll stick to the buildings.

It has an open mission structure. So does tons of other games. GTA takes place in a city. So does tons of other games. You can drive a car. So do tons of other games. You can shoot people...get where I am going with this?

I'm sorry, but for every person who sees a sandbox game and makes the jump to "GTA clone", I think that person is going to miss out on a lot of good games for the stupidest reason. I even heard someone call Oblivion a GTA clone. Remember Grand Theft Horse? How ignorant is that?!

15. Johnny, nice build up you fanboy. Seems you like the GTA and SR but you only seem to bring that up as a comparison to crackdown as to why it sucks. I loved this game before I tried the co-op.

ummm.. wait a second, can you hear that!? Nope guess not, I thought I heard someone say they love the game because of the co-op but really that is a RARE thing to hear compared to the list of other great things about the game, like upgrading your vehicles, characters, physics, etc. So if you think it's all about the co op ONLY, then let me tell you that you're wrong. So there is nothing for us to realize here except that you're retarded.

16. I'm no fanboy

I used GTA and SR as examples becuase the fact is this genre is the same and those two games are closest to it in relationship.

I dont think crackdown sucks cuzz its not like gta.

I think it sucks cuzz it doesnt do anything new, and it does all the standard things to a limited degree. dont go assuming everyone is a fan boy because they dont like somthing.

that kills me.
its the mid 90's all over again.

If you just didnt like somthing people called you a "Hater"

Im sorry that I dont get into Puff Daddies Lame rhyme schemes that draw on peoples left over sympathies for biggy smalls.

just like I'm sorry that I dont get into an xbox1 quality video game with no genre advancement aside from solid co-op.
