Speaking to N'Gai Croal about the upcoming Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, SEGA of America president, Simon Jeffrey intimated that Sonic will soon be disappearing from the public eye for a while. Jeffrey notes that "we're not going to be bringing another [Sonic] game out on the other platforms for quite some time, because we feel that it is time to reinvent Sonic, to make Sonic contemporary again." While the recent Nintendo iterations of Sonic (Sonic Rush on DS and Sonic and the Secret Rings on Wii) have received decent reviews, his most recent outing on PS3 and 360 suffered from serious problems. Before that, the Sonic universe was subjected to the God-awful combination of hedgehogs and guns in Shadow the Hedgehog. To put it bluntly, the Sonic series has been faltering. Of course, that doesn't mean it hasn't been selling well, as Jeffrey points out.Frankly, this can't be viewed as anything but a good thing. The quality of Sonic games has been slipping over the last few years and a "reset" sounds like exactly what Sonic needs. What would you like to see SEGA do with the next Sonic. We have only two words. No. Sidekicks.

All they have to do is take out bottomless pits and make the levels straight, remember Crash Bandicoot? It's really that simple.

Yeah, I agree. I've been arguing this for a while. Secret Rings does this to an extent, but there's a lot about it that just doesn't work all that well... the missions, for one.
I don't really care about bottomless pits very much considering how many spiked pits there were in the old games.

I think the mission system of Secret Rings was fine, but there were too many missions, not enough seperate worlds
instead of 7 worlds with 10 missions each, try 20 worlds with 3 missions each
Game would've felt much smoother
Personally (and i'll sound like a glutton for punishment), if i had a 360, i'd get Sonic 06, because (aside from those god-awful stories), i enjoy the 3D game mechanics, so i'm cool with whatever they do

"Sidekicks" enrich the universe. Nobody whines about Luigi.. or Wario... or Yoshi or Toad or Peach. The difference is that you don't play as them.
Also significant is that when you do, they don't play like shit.
It's getting pretty tiresome to hear people whine that haven't played the Sonics since the Megadrive ones and assume the settings and themes and characters haven't moved on since.

No dude Shadow the Hedgehog sucks and I can sum it up in one statement.
Shadow rides in vehicles, Sonic is all about being the fastest thing alive and moving faster than any car or tank or anything could take you. Shadow design is also terrible hes a black version of Sonic and people are all tripping over him.
People don't like the other characters because the games they star in are terrible.
Kill off everyone but Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Robotnic.

2D gameplay, 3D graphics.
Take inspiration from Viewtiful Joe (flat world that rotated around corners, zoomed in and out, etc.) and the upcoming Paper Mario and build on that. Sonic could easily become the preeminent neo-2D franchise without sacrificing graphical quality.

They need to just pick off were Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast left off. Without the side kicks except for Tails. Tails is badass. Anyway that would do it for me. Sonic for 360 would've been good if they would've taken out the gay story and given them more time for the camera, collision, ect...
Sonic doesn't need a fucking story that's that in depth. Ya know, you kick the bad guys ass at the end of each level, the end!

the last semi decent Sonic was Adventure for the Dreamcast. i was expecting something along those lines for the 360 release but was very dissapointed. The Dreamcast version did have an RPG feel about it, but also some great set pieces and very fast scenes and levels. And great mini games, i would love to see that again

@4 - I don't mind the mission idea in and of itself, but the goals were largely pretty lame.
You know, both Sonic Adventure games had a great opening level. In both cases, I felt each one captured the old games so well, albeit in slightly different ways. I wish they could just keep those ideas going throughout the rest of the game.

Good riddance. As a game journalist who had to review Shadow (and who fortunately didn't have to review the new Sonic on the 360), it's safe to say this series is way past its freshness date. My fellow critic at the site I write for was going to write up the new one for the Wii, but he said it was so awful he wasn't going to waste his or anyone else's time with it. IMHO, Sonic's definitely a series that should have taken an extended break a long time ago.

Just do a sequel to Sonic 3D from the Sega CD and that'd be interesting.
Think about it: Sonic running around bombed out, post-apocalyptic ruins of say, San Francisco...Tokyo, wherein he becomes 'Nuke Sonic' and radiates the (evil?) survivors..Hell, for that matter, a feudal Japan while we're runnin' through time again!
I don't know if I'm bieng serious, actually. I DO agree Sonic doesn't need or benefit from sidebar characters like Slappy the Hamster, Rufus the Cancerous Potato, Lydia the PR representative..
Another idea might be to have a 'sandbox' type game where the whole world is open from the get-go..you just have to zoom there..up and down buildings, smash through the streets, what-have-you.
Hey...maybe Sonic could be there as a sort of infiltrator into Eggman (Dr. Robotnik)'s main headquarters or something. Just blue-skying here folks..

#8 you hit the nail on the head. It is a 2D game always will be. They need to use all the hardwares power to make the graphics kick ass in a 2D world. Think of all the power they could use if they didn't use it to render 3D worlds.
I would like to see more old games rebuilt from the ground up using the full processing power on graphics, rather than using all that power on 3D environments.
If you think Gears Of War had good graphics imagine what they could do in a 2D world.
When Mortal Kombat came out, it had the best graphics ever in a game, because of all the advancements made and digitization. But right after that, games went to 3D, and its like everything started from scratch again. They should go back to the way games used to be made. It would be amazing.
