Oblivion PS3 vs. Xbox 360 comparison
Ahh, video console comparisons. As flamebait goes, it doesn't get much better than video console comparisons. Wary as we are of this, we can't help but post GameTrailers' recent video comparison of the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Oblivion. Granted, Bethesda has had a substantial amount of time to improve the PS3 version, but there are some undeniable differences. In particular, at about 1:30, you'll witness some nasty pop-up on the 360 version. We're only speculating here, but that may be the result of all PS3's containing a hard drive; Bethesda didn't have to account for a Core version as on 360. There are some other subtle differences, you can see a few more wrinkles on the King's face in the PS3 version and some of the weapon textures look sharper. Other textures look better on the 360, though, most notably the textures of the cobblestones on the city streets.
Now, Bethesda has made it known that many of the graphical additions made to the PS3 version will be made available for the 360 version as well. Hopefully, we'll see another comparison after that comes to pass.
To the topic at hand, though, can you declare a clear winner in this video? Hit the "read" link to compare them in HD.

After what, damn near a year, I'd hope it'd look a little bit better.

The 360 seems to have better lighting and anti-aliasing in the dungeon areas... and as anybody who has played this game will tell you, the dungeons are where all the fun and atmosphere in Oblivion lives.

I think that the Xbox 360 look a lot better than the ps3 one.
The color of the grass on ps3 looks like it has been washed out too much (maybe due to brightness or whatever) and also the face of the emperor looks like shit on the ps3

Actually I was going to say the opposite, bbxboy.
I think the PS3 version looks slightly better only due to better lighting. I really hate not being able to have *some* sort of sight in dungeons, I'm forever using my Khajiit's 'Night-Eye' ability.
Of course, you can simply increase the brightness and it'll be slightly even, as long as you don't go too far as to wash it out.

The Ps3 versions seems to have better draw distance, but I give my nod to the 360 for better lighting and detail.
As always, the contrast is horrible in both versions.

I think that possibly Xbox360 is tuned to provide a full spectrum luminance, whereas PS3 is tuned to approximate the normal NTSC luminance spectrum that has like 10 shades of grey that all are intended be black (in other words, a high pedestal level, and you should be turning down your brigthness to compensate for that).
On a computer, you're going to see a brightness difference, but on TVs properly set up for each console, they SHOULD look the same.
I noticed the pop up in that spot. If you watch a bit later, you can see that the PS3 version pops up a tree next to the church.
What's surprising to me is that I don't notice any difference in distant draw. I thought Bethesda said that they had made improvements to the way that the shaders worked that were going to provide better coverage on hills etc in the distance.

I think the 360 update hits today, so lame timnig for gametrailers, they could have waiting a few hours and done a better comparison.

For the price difference of the consoles and the amount of extra development time they had with the game, I would say the difference is not good enough. There's little things like the pop up and finer bump mapping detail. I would guess some of that is post-360-release optimizations to the code and not something that the PS3 can do better.
Plus, does it run at only 720p on the PS3? If so, then people with 1080i-only TVs will be seeing this at 480p anyway.

Surprisingly, the 360 seems to produce more vibrant colors than the PS3 does in general. At least from my experience. Even the PSP seems to be more colorful than the PS3. It's not quite Genesis vs SNES color difference, but I have noticed it.
I'd blame it on HDMI...but I've tried component as well. Besides, digital is supposed to be "better", right? My 1080p TV doesn't seem to care.

The PS3 version looks near to high-end PC versions, the XBOX 360 one falls a little behind.

I think that the PS3 looks more detailed, with seems to have a higher resolution? That's what it looks like anyway.
However, in some areas, this actually works AGAINST the PS3. The emperor's face was horrid, the 360 one looked so much better.
I'm no PS3 bashing fanboy, but i would hope more from a year's improvements. The only thing that would make me want to play the PS3 version more is the lack of pop-up, and i didn't see any loading screens, whereas i did on the 360 one. It would be interesting to see a full video of a ride past a city of something to see if the PS3 gets those annoying "Loading Area" messages.
I am still reserving judgement on the PS3 until i can play one myself, and to be honest, i don't want to until they drop the price and i won't feel guilty if i do buy one...

In the video, apart from that structure popping up on the 360 version (which has never happened me) they are pretty much identical (and you can see the cobblestones look a lot worse on the PS3. And on the PS3 if you notice, there is some pop-up in the background which isn't noticeable on the 360 version.
Also, the old man at the start actually looks older in the PS3 version.
Also, the fact that graphical improvements will be coming to the 360 shows that even still, the PS3 yet to show anything truly significant that's better than the 360.

XBOX 360 version looks alot better in my opinion. Alot more color, better lighting, and overall sharper textures. IMO they didn't do much at all to the PS3 version.

Really, considering how long ago the 360 version came out and how much time has been spent on this port, I kind of would HOPE it would look better.

Seems the PS3 has a better draw distance, but the 360 has better textures. Overall, I'd say the 360 wins that battle easily.

I'd agree with ShaolinDolemite: if it didn't look at least a little better after a year, I'd say there's something seriously wrong with the PS3. Most notable is the sheild and weapon detail... I think the temple pop-up example is a programming/caching glitch they've fixed, not necessarily superior horsepower.
Has there been an official explanation as to why there's dramatically different contrast (dark vs. light areas) between the two systems? It works for some games, but here I actually like seeing the detail in the dungeons on the PS3...most games, PS3 looks washed out.
Bring on the 360 update - I'm just starting to get into this game (finally)...

Is it me or does it seem that the brightness on the PS3 is set alot higher than the 360 version? This does not look like an accurate comparison.
