Star Trek: Legacy goes the wrong way

Reviews for Star Trek: Legacy are all over the map. They range from 40 to 91 on Metacritic and the game averages 67% on Game Rankings. Bad reviews focus on difficult controls and repetitive gameplay, while good reviews mention the epic battles and storyline. Naturally, Star Trek fans will probably find the most to like about this title. Or will they? Two new trailers for the game have appeared on Marketplace, and we were unimpressed. It's not that the game doesn't look decent, it's just that it really doesn't seem to fit the Trek universe. We put the game in our rental queue just to make sure, but it seems like basing a Star Trek game entirely on space combat isn't really a good idea. By and large, people watch Star Trek for the stories and characters, not epic space battles. Sure, Star Trek has its share of battles, but it's not Star Wars. Most of the fun Trek games we remember (PC and 16-bit era) involved controlling the characters themselves, essentially enacting new episodes of the show. These missions were often punctuated by space battles, but battle was never the sole purpose of the game.

Have any of you played Legacy yet? Is it good, or should we regret putting it in our queue?

1. I was really really excited about this game because the concept behind it was so awesome...

5 minutes into the game I found myself swearing at the screen and throwing down the controller....

that game is SOOOOO bad. The controls are impossible and the cutscenes are horrible, I want to see the people talking when they are talking, not just shots of the ships.

2. I LOVE Legacy. We have a massive thread devoted to the game over at 360Arcadians -- http://forums.360arcadians.net/viewtopic.php?t=743

Personally the game is definately the YMWV sort. For anyone that enjoys Star Trek though, it's a chance to geek out with fellow nerds via Live.

The modelling of the ships is pretty faithful to the game, and there is something really thrilling about decloaking a WarBird behind a Galaxy class Starship and opening up with full disruptors.

Legacy gets a big thumbs up from me, it's definately a great console translation of the franchise.

Personally I watched Star Trek specifically for the fleet battles (DS9 yeah baby!), while I love Star Wars as well, I think that Star Trek gives a different feeling more akin to naval combat. There is something very stately about Star Trek space battles, and Legacy emulates that stately feeling to a T.

3. Heh, I'm right in the middle between the first two comments. I'm a big Trek fan so I was really excited for this release. Then the PC version came out first with its significant bugs and control issues and got me a little concerned about my upcoming foray into 360 space battles. Well, sight-unseen I still picked it up and have played it some.

I don't want to get too long-winded about it, so let me just say that certain parts of it are certainly a disappointment: the controls are a bit frustrating at times, the scale of the maps (and the objects in the maps) are pretty silly, the graphics (while mostly gorgeous) are buggy at times and show the rushed quality of the game.

There's a lot to like too, but the 70-75% range seems fair for the current product. I'm desperately hoping that Mad Doc will come back from their holiday vacation ready to patch this game through the roof and make it the Trek action game it was intended to be.

Summary: Keep the game in the queue and give it a shot.

4. I thought it was a grat game. Most of the unfavorable reviews seam to talk about the PC version not the 360 which is what the game was designed for.

It has some issues, like the huge multiplayer bandwidth requirements and not being able to select past missions but other than that its a great game

5. I've been playing Legacy MP a few nights a week and it's one of the most fun games I've played so far.

I'm a member of the forum #2 posted about, and we've set up all sorts of games and duked it out throughout the eras. The game's far from perfect, and being a fan certainly helps, but it's alot of fun, and that's really what matters the most.

The single player campaign is ok. I've seen far better, for sure. Multiplayer is where it's at, no doubt.

7. I love legacy, it a mix between combat, tactics and just blowing crap up. Im playing it right now, and i will keep playing it. If im completly honest, the game is a little trying the 1st time u play it, but dont give up on it, and there will be points during the campaign where you will be annoyed with your fleet of ships, but overall its a great game 8/10 for me

8. Once you get past the steep learning curve for controlling multiple ships, some terrible missions(Revelations), are not turned off by the limited(i.e. not fun) "Enterprise" era ships and Scott Bakula's wooden voice overs in the first few missions; it levels off into a poor rendition of the 10 year old PC game, Homeworld.

Still worth a rental for any Trek fan. The story is quite good, though it's presentation is similar to Gears of War(meaning there is none). Watch the comic style cut scenes in the extras first so it makes more sense.

As one reviewer stated: it's best played on easy with a guide nearby.

9. Played for about an hour... awful controls.

10. The best Trek game ever was in an arcade, where you sat in Kirk's chair and used the controls (spinner, mostly) to battle vector-graphics ships and TRY to kill the little Nomad blip.

Sure, 3D is nice, but the fun needs to be there too...

11. I like the controls and the game. If you click on the guy you want attack and let the ship auto pilot during the fight it will allow you to focus on other controls. Also being able to manage your money and buy ships and sell them is great because I always try to do the missions with the minimum number and save up for a nice strong ship.

12. seems like Star Trek would be a good candidate for a "Knights of the Old Republic" style game.

13. I've always dreamed of a Trek game where you were the Captain of a starship, have space battles, travel and explore the galaxy, make away missions to planets, and explore your own ship deck to deck.

Imagine the freakin' possibilities!! RTS for the ship navigation, battles, and resource collection, FPS for the exploration and humaniod battles.

14. @12,
I'm not sure if an RPG set 3000 years before the Star Trek timeline would really sell off the shelves. But then again, an RPG set during the conquest of Alexander the Great could be interesting.

;-) Couldn't resist. Good idea, btw.

15. I like the game. It just annoys me that every now and then it crashes my xbox.

16. I've enjoyed the game up to a point and now I'll wait for a patch that will hopefully fix the mulitplayer lobby problems and the VERY annoying save-game issues. In single player, you can't save until a whole chapter is done and a whole chapter can take hours. With a two year old son, I never have over an hour in one sitting. It's shelved until they develop a fix. I wrote up a small posting on my blog that explains what I feel are the pros and cons of the game.

17. I am a fan only of DS9, but otherwise am not a particularly huge fan of Star Trek. I did get it anyway, because A) screw the enterprise, screw the galaxy and sovereign class, screw the voyager, it's ALL about the defiant, and B) I needed a good space ship sim.

and I would like to be the one to point out that this game is NOT what was promised to us. there was a lot of talk of upgrading ships as you go along, weighing the option of buying a brand new spanking state-of-the-art ship vs just upgrading old ones.

well... it's not in there.

and the controls just.don't.work.

In addition to that, the game does not give you the info and documentation you need. I am not a huge trekkie, and so therefore, I am not going to know right off the bat where every weapons hardpoint is on every ship. I need the game to tell me, either in the manual, or in the in game ship database.

I'm gonna give the game a second shot, but at this point... it's just a bust.

I am gonna keep giving the game

18. The only real problem I had with the controls was moving your individual ships was tough. Like if i needed a ship to move a turret while i controlled the other ships, it would just stop in its tracks .
Other than that everything else is just personal preference. Saying the game should've had away missions and played more like the show , maybe should've read the box. This is the first real Trek game to actually let you fight ship to ship. You can even target specific weapons systems , adjust power distribution and command the goddamned Defiant!

19. I think the game is great. The battles are epic. The controla are good, not great. The story line is great. I dont understand what people are complaining about. I think the game is fun. Especially the online space battles. I like the game, I like Star Trek, and I'm not even a Star Trek fanboy!
