This week in HD-DVD: do I know you? edition

It's Monday, time for the second week of "This Week in HD-DVD" and we've got some (how shall I say this) not so big blockbuster movies releasing. We guess it's that time of year when HD-DVD releases are sporadic as in years previous. And yes, that was a joke so no need to email us about how HD-DVDs were not available years ago ... we know friends. The only movies that really make us cheer this week would be the films Hulk and World Trade Center, but maybe you've been eagerly anticipating the release of Manilow Live! We don't judge here, but we must say that Manilow does have great hair as he has definitely perfected that "poofy look". Anyway, below are the HD-DVDs releasing this week ... enjoy.
  • HD-DVD Movie Releases: December 12th
  • Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire: Live at the Greek Theatre
  • Field of Dreams
  • Heart: Alive in Seattle
  • Hulk
  • Manilow Live!
  • World Trade Center

1. Field of Dreams is the only one worth a crap on that list, if they want this HD-DVD thing to take off they need to get better movies out on them IMO anyway.

2. Yeah, he does look like a 'poof' doesn't he.

3. Has anybody picked up the HD-DVD player for the 360? I saw one and was sort of curious about getting it, but I'm really not sure if it's worth it. Is the picture quality that much better over DVD? Is the 360 player comparable to other players on the market?

I've heard one tidbit the piqued my interest on HD-DVD over Blu ray, and that's the fact that they're going to begin manufacturing combo HD and DVD discs that have both layers playable. Essentially you won't have to purchase separate copies of the same movie to get the DVD and HD version. If this is true and becomes widely adopted, I'd be more tempted to buy the HD-DVD add on to the 360.

4. Wizard Poop: (...interesting name)

I bought the HD-DVD player and I have nothing but good things to say about it. First off, the difference in picture quality is crystal clear (obviuosly only if you have an HDTV). IMO, if you have watched HD cable channels, the quality is even better than that. The difference between DVD and HD-DVD is great, especially when switching between the two formats like I have been doing lately since I only own two HD movies.

I would also stress that the sound is much much much better with HD-DVD over surround sound than DVD. The sound quality difference is just as crisp as the picture, especially in the rear speakers.

For me, the HD-DVD 360 add on replaced my Upscaling HDMI DVD player, and I can happily say the 360 HDDVD add on does a much better job at upscalling than the Samsung DVD player did. And now I don't have an annoying DVD player sitting out in the open as the 360 player is small and fits in my media cabinet.

Basically, if you have the HDTV and like the selection of movies available, or will be available, then get the add on, it's relativly cheap and the quality is outstanding.

Nautical Wheeler:

I completly agree that we need to see some better movies coming out. It's actually surprsing that there aren't. IMO other than King King, we have really yet to see a movie that wil lpush the format. If they would just hurry up and get Lord of the Rings out on HD-DVD, we would see HD-DVD sets flying off the shelf. I've been really wanting to watch LOTR again, but I'm waiting to watch all the movies on HD-DVD. Even Harry Potter would help. I want a good reason why these are taking so flippin long!

5. I have a HDDVD for X360 as well. It's a great deal. heh, well I was able to get $55 off at circuit city about a month ago so I got it for $145 which includes the $20 movie I hadn't seen.

I think the best think to do is by the HDDVD and then rent movies through netflix. They have almost all the movies that are out on HDDVD.

For purchasing I dont see much I want all though I'm a fan of Firefly so Serenity in HD might be keeper

6. It's a double-edged sword. The movies will come when there are more HD-DVD players in the homes. If more players are sold, this should convince those studios on the Blu-Ray side to also come over to HD-DVD. Since I will not be buying a Blu-Ray player, if they want my money, HD-DVD is where it's at. And name one studio that isn't interested in money :P
