New Aliens: Colonial Marines Concept Art

Not a whole hell of a lot is known about the tactical squad based shooter, being brought to us courtesy of Gearbox and Sega. The licensed FPS, Aliens: Colonial Marines, was revealed in older issue of Game Informer, and then rather dropped off the radar until reappearing in UK's OXM. Colonial Marines is scheduled to hit this fall and sport four-player drop-in-drop-out online coop, and the new two pieces of concept art depict the heads of one of the aliens and one of the marines. They'll probably be used as some sort of promotional material for the game, so we're likely to see these images again.

Aliens: Colonial Marines details, screens hatch

The UK arms of the Official Xbox and PlayStation magazines dropped fresh details and screens on Gearbox's upcoming first-person shooter, Aliens: Colonial Marines. Set three years after the events in the 1986 sci-fi action classic Aliens, Colonial Marines sets the stage for a rescue group in search of the team sent to investigate a human colony on LV-426 that had broken off communication.

Details on the game have been scarce but GamesRadar detailed a few choice tidbits. The game will feature a mixture of claustrophobic indoor and outdoor environments where basic missions have been scrapped in favor of objective gameplay. The example given is something you can see in the image above. In certain predetermined areas of the game you will be forced to "Make a Stand" and survive an onslaught of enemy bugs.

The four-player co-op we previously reported has been confirmed as drop-in and drop-out with system link, split-screen and online support. Also confirmed is that the enemies will have acid blood which will both harm players if they get too close as well change the environment in subtle ways. Lastly, the game will feature quick-time events that OPM thinks will take some getting used to. Well at least most of it sounds awesome.

Aliens: Colonial Marines, FPS, coming in 2009

So it seems that the long-announced, but not-much-discussed Aliens game, brought to us by Gearbox and Sega, has finally been revealed. As strange as it is to see a revival of the Aliens IP, the brand still does command plenty of loyalty and the idea of bringing it to the most played genre around isn't that out there. The game is unveiled in this month's issue of Game Informer and is formally titled Aliens: Colonial Marines. The title is an obscure reference to a scene from the second movie in which Ripley meets United States Colonial Marines. Evidently the colonies will be the focus of the game, as no details have been released regarding the game's story or canonical connection to the films. We do however know that the game will be squad based is due out after the end of the year.

Borderlands on the 360 will require a HDD

Concluding a Games Convention demo of the 2008 release Borderlands (that Diablo meets Mad Max shooter), the president of Gearbox Randy Pitchford confirmed with 1UP that when the game releases, it will require a HDD if played on the Xbox 360. Pitchford is fully aware of Microsoft's opinion on HDD required games, but still sticks to his studios' development guns stating that Borderlands needs a caching HDD due to the unique nature of the game and all its randomly generated missions of randomness. Honestly, we're just curious to see how Microsoft will handle games and developers when talk of HDD required games begins to bubble up. Cue death stare!

Gearbox's Borderlands to be published by 2K

Borderlands
, the upcoming Mad Max-ish, Diablo-esque action game from Gearbox, has been picked up by publisher 2K Games (who are releasing a little game called BioShock next week, by the way). Known for their work on the Brothers In Arms series, Gearbox is crafting Borderlands as an action game with RPG elements and 4 player online co-op. In other words, it sounds like just the thing to cure what ails you (and a hell of a lot of fun to boot). President of 2K, Christoph Hartmann, notes that Borderlands will play host to "revolutionary new technology" that allows for the creation of "thousands of unique, randomly generated missions, weapons and situations." With such lofty promises in tow, Hartmann concludes that Borderlands "will raise the bar for next gen action games."

We'll have to wait and see though, as the game isn't scheduled to release until the end of 2008. For more info on Borderlands, keep an eye out for the September Game Informer, of which the contents will no doubt be scoured for the benefit of X3F readers everywhere.

Aliens FPS details emerge, play as a Marine

GameSpot recently got the chance to sit down with Randy Pitchford, founder of Gearbox, at the Ubidays 2007 event held last week in Paris. Among other topics, Pitchford revealed a few details regarding the upcoming Aliens FPS title being developed by Gearbox and published by SEGA. While he revealed no specific details about the gameplay, he did note that players would take on the role of a Colonial Marine, similar to the characters in the film. According to Pitchford, "Our game's about becoming a Colonial Marine, and looking at it from the Colonial Marines' perspective." We imagine that this is music to the ears of Aliens fans everywhere. Pitchford also revealed that Gearbox has a limited collaborative relationship with Obsidian, who is handling development of the Aliens RPG.

In other news, Gearbox is also in the beginning stages of developing a game based on Heat, the iconic 1995 crime film. Aliens and Heat, strange bedfellows indeed.

Hell's Highway: Bigger, longer and uncut

Here's a longer, larger version of that Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway trailer from a day ago. I still say there's nothing more touching in video game land than having a sqadmate pick shards of metal out of your bloody arm.

WWII games are a dime a dirty dozen, but I still love'em, especially if it's from Gearbox. Check out this three minute trailer for Brother's in Arms: Hell's Highway over at TeamXbox.
