Aliens FPS details emerge, play as a Marine

GameSpot recently got the chance to sit down with Randy Pitchford, founder of Gearbox, at the Ubidays 2007 event held last week in Paris. Among other topics, Pitchford revealed a few details regarding the upcoming Aliens FPS title being developed by Gearbox and published by SEGA. While he revealed no specific details about the gameplay, he did note that players would take on the role of a Colonial Marine, similar to the characters in the film. According to Pitchford, "Our game's about becoming a Colonial Marine, and looking at it from the Colonial Marines' perspective." We imagine that this is music to the ears of Aliens fans everywhere. Pitchford also revealed that Gearbox has a limited collaborative relationship with Obsidian, who is handling development of the Aliens RPG.

In other news, Gearbox is also in the beginning stages of developing a game based on Heat, the iconic 1995 crime film. Aliens and Heat, strange bedfellows indeed.

See, now this shiz is cool. I'd love to be a space marine in the Aliens FPS.. but I'd also like to be a Predator...

If I get bored of that, I can go hold up a major metropolitan bank with DeNiro?? Get me a monkey and a van and I'M IN!

Gearbox is great. Thank you video game gods!!! I want this more then Halo 3..or any game for that matter. I have been begging for an FPS Aliens game on XBOX forever! (AvP Extinction was horrible) I love the Alien Trilogy on Sega Saturn and the AvP Pc shooters.
Aliens is def my favorite movie ever. Even today the special effects are incredible. James Cameron is the best.
As long as they give me my smartgun and a m41A pulse rifle it will rock. They can do so much with this game, they should let me give them suggestions. LOL. Don't let me down SEGA. I don't ask much from this site but I hope you guys can keep us updated every time you hear some news on this game.
I wonder if the story is gonna follow any of the comics or books. They should def get a good writer. Or just re-do Aliens with way more battles.

Yay. Another FPS where you play as a space marine.

But what's this? You say it's based on a movie liscense? AND it's being developed by a company that's cut it's teeth on semi-competent WWII shooters!? How could this possibly get any better?

Whats that? You say Sega's publishing it!? FREAKIN' AWESOME!

Seriously: I think I just heard a toilet flushing in anticipation.

Now I liked Band of Brothers: The Video Game and everything; but maybe it's time for Gearbox to hire someone with an original idea or two. How many movie IP's are they going to turn into derivative videogames before people start to catch on?

My bet is after this inevitable turd the answer will be "none".

I remember playing the first FPS of this genre on the PC. The nice thing about it was that you could play a Marine, Alien, or Predator. This was when Fox has the title. Too bad that this will not afford the same three-way playing environment. If one is forced into a Marine-only playing environment, then this will mimic games like Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six and other common FPS games. I wonder if they will support cooperative Live play.
