(Page 1)2. Wow, this means that the 4 people who don't have a hard can't play this game.

3. Good. I hope this sets a precedent so that future games can require it making them better. About time to say goodbye to the core system...

5. Pretty much #2! I don't really see how this is advantage PS3 when the only people without hard drives on their 360 are 5 and 6 year olds who received their consoles as gifts from their parents who didn't know the difference. And somehow I don't think 5 and 6 year olds will be playing Borderlands...

7. Andy,
So you're saying the xbox was better then the PS2 due to that HDD advantage, right?

8. I don't see what the problem is as long as it's marked on the package so people with a HDD don't buy the game when it's required.
From the article "...the game procedurally generates everything..." I'm guessing that they need the HDD as a cache to decompress the models on to it so they don't have to keep generating the models every time they need it.

9. i think that M$ should drop the requirement that games cannot require a hard drive.
people without hard drives are really lowering the bar for the rest of us

10. As long as the post a big icon saying 'Hard Drive REQUIRED', sounds fine to me.

11. Didn't FFXI on the Xbox360 require a hard drive? It did for the PS2 so if FFXI somehow magically didn't require a hard drive on the Xbox360 that would be news to me.

12. This is a no brainer really. Current games won't need the hardrive but when it does become an issue the 20 gig drive will be affordable that those 5-10% of 360 owners will upgrade or just be assed out. Some people complain about the core users being screwed but it was their choice to buy a 360 without a hardrive. I am sure in those 5-10% many could care less about going on xbox live and just wanted to play their favorite game like gears or a guitar here etc without spending the extra cash. Again this will be a non issue in terms of slowing the 360 down in the future. Basically if a developer can get away with just a disk then they will try their best effort to make it fit and if not then it will be multiple disk or downloadable content but bottomline is games will continue to be made for the 360 thanks to its install base. Not every game will need a hardrive especially games for the casual people which Microsoft is trying to capture more off.

13. A premium console is still WAY cheaper than a PS3! Everybody has the hard drive, except for kids. They can't buy consoles, so who gives a crap?

14. @7
I actually had an Xbox before I got my PS3. So yes it was better, I enjoyed my Xbox alot but after Bully didn't make its way to Xbox I needed a brand switch.

My point being the lack of an HDD didn't exactly hinder the PS2's sales. I also owned xboxes and PS2's last gen, personally, liked the xbox better, and personally like having an HDD as standard, however, I really don't see it being some form of achilles heal as most PS3 fanboys ("HDD's aren't needed" from the PS2 days") would like it to be.

18. Well really-- What's MS going to do? If the game is good and will sell, then what would they gain by telling the developer to go back to the drawing board and not release it?
I think if developers just ignored the non-HDD requirement and made a bunch of awesome games that require the HDD, the suits at MS would have to just let them go because it would be suicide to forbid any good releases for the console for such flimsy reasons.
WE the users want HDD exclusive games. The developers want them, too. MS would be smart to give up the battle and let us have them, because the core users will UPGRADE if they want to play those kinds of games, and it's ultimately GOOD for the console and for MS.

19. Well as the rumours of the Core becoming the Arcade with a free memory card, we may find M$ change the rules for HDDs at that point.
Personally I hope so.

20. wow Elliot J way to turn your back on 20% of all 360 owners what ever happened to affordable next gen gaming(wii doesnt count) what about all the so called casual gamers who might not need all 20 gigs but a 256mb memory card.
