Dash update to quiet loud 360 DVD drive?

German website Cynamite is reporting that Microsoft has released a dashboard update to developers that will quiet the loud Xbox 360 DVD drive. This update will supposedly prevent the DVD drive from spinning at full RPM unnecessarily and will manage the drive's spin speed much better. In general, the update would tell the DVD drive not to spin so fast when it isn't needed, which would in turn make it less noisy. Cynamite is also reporting that the dashboard update should be coming to Xbox Live soon for the rest of us to download. Even though we know your answer we have to ask, would you welcome an update that would ultimately quiet down your 360's DVD drive?

HD-DVD vs DVD: Let's compare Xbox 360 style

Since we're all about supporting HD-DVD here at Fanboy Towers, we've stumbled upon an article that compares the prettiness of HD-DVD to that of DVD. Games Central put up a few comparison shots of the movies King Kong and Batman Begins, focusing on the image quality of HD-DVD and DVD. The actual pictures on their site aren't of the greatest quality, but you can still tell a difference in many shots. Just look at the image above that was taken from the movie King Kong. The HD-DVD side looks much more vivid and pretty, where as the DVD side is more "blah". As we said, the images from the website aren't the greatest, but be rest assured that HD-DVD will look very pretty up close in your living room.

HD-DVD drive will be the cheapest

Speaking to Larry Hryb (AKA Major Nelson) in his recent pod blogcast, Microsoft's Albert Penello assured listeners that the upcoming HD-DVD add-on for the 360 would be the "cheapest HD-DVD player you can buy without a doubt, when it comes out." Now, with current players going for $400 or more, this means the anticipated add-on could cost over $300. Still, most speculate a price of around $200. The reason Microsoft can afford to make it so cheap less expensive than the $500-1000 competition is that the 360 itself will be handling the brunt of the work. Just to squeeze in a little offhanded Sony bashing, Penello reiterated that the 360 is about "choice." Quoth he,

"We're not betting our whole console on an unproven media format ... Look, the thing about it is they are betting the company on Blu-ray, and they are making the consumers pay for their bet."

So, now the million dollar question, would you buy the HD-DVD add-on for 200 bucks?

How the HD-DVD drive works with the 360 UI

The folks over at Gamerscore Blog have posted a few pics explaining how the upcoming 360 HD-DVD drive will interact with UI we've all come to know and love. Pretty simple really. The "Open Tray" button at the bottom of the screen will do double duty for both drives. See, simple. Also, if you missed it, Major Nelson talks about the HD-DVD drive in his latest pod blogcast. For those of you wondering if the HD-DVD drive supports HDMI, it's looking like the answer is no. However, if the pod blogcast is to be believed, it doesn't matter.

All you videophiles out there, give it a listen and tell us what you think.

Format war might be over before it starts

It looks like a company called Ricoh may bring an end to the bitter rivalry between HD-DVD and Blu-ray. The company has reportedly developed a component that reads and writes to both HD-DVD and Blu-ray formats. Not only that, it reads and writes to CD and DVD as well.

Gathering what I could from the description of the device,  I'm fairly certain the component operates using what I like to call "magic." Ricoh plans to display the component at the upcoming Optoelectronics Exhibition in Japan later this week.

If you've been planning on picking up the HD-DVD drive for the 360 (or a certain other console) you might want to see how this technology pans out.

Scratch support: Suck disc

There's anarchy in the UK. Well, at least when it comes scratched PDZ discs:

I just got off the phone from the UK XB360 support team - as you know when the 360 launched and it was scratching discs, microsoft was replacing copies , at least of perfect dark zero - my 360 managed to scratch my copy of pd0, and its now unplayable, without my interfering with the console - having called up the UK 360 support team, they told me that they've done "research" into it, and the only way this happens is by someone "moving" the console during gameplay, so they refused to replace it- firstly thats not exact kosher seeing as its all too easy to move the 360, and secondly, its patently not true because mine seems to have managed to destroy a disc without the slightest interference.

Somebody ought to figure out just how much movement it takes to ruin a $60 DVD. You know who that someone should be? Microsoft Support.

How many other people have run into this problem and what was your experience with MS? Does not moving the console during gameplay  mean we'll never see a 360 on Pimp My Ride?

[Thanks Theo]

Fanboy Poll: What brand is your 360's DVD drive?

Llamma has posted some images of the two different DVD drives being offered in the Xbox 360: on the left is the newer, and quieter, Samsung drive (model #TS-H943), easily identified by its unique drive-tray and ninja-like stealth. On the right is the Hitachi (model #GDR-3120L), easily identified by the notches on its drive tray, and the ear-splitting noise it produces when it really gets going.

Are the drives being replaced across the product line, or will they continue to use the Hitachi drive as well? And what about you, dear reader, what's in your 360?

What DVD drive is in your 360?
Enjoying the smooth sounds of Samsung.
What? I can't hear you! I think it's a Hitachi.
I don't have a 360, jerks!
