This Week in HD DVD: Re-issued edition

This week's HD DVD excitement is plentiful in shear numbers, but not so much in terms of "newness". You see, this week Warner studios decided to re-issue a bunch of their previous HD DVD releases which are already available on store shelves. No, there wasn't anything wrong with the previous versions and no they didn't add anything new to the HD DVDs, it's just that the previous versions were the more expensive combo-HD DVD. So, this week they decided to re-release those combo format HD DVDs and make them plain Jane HD DVDs, thus making them a tad bit cheaper. Exciting no? But don't fret new content HD DVD purchasers, because there is goodness in the form of Top Gun this week and who can honestly say that they don't like Top Gun? Full list of new (and re-issued) HD DVDs is lovingly listed below.
  • HD DVD Movie Releases: October 2nd
  • The Ant Bully (re-issue)
  • The Departed (re-issue)
  • Dreaming Nevada
  • The Fountain (re-issue)
  • Galapagos

  • Happy Feet (re-issue)
  • Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (re-issue)

1. Hey everyone,

My HD-DVD drive has stopped playing HD-DVDs. When you insert an HD-DVD into the drive, it reads the disc, the screen goes black, then the 360 dashboard pops back up again. Anyone else having this problem? This was the first time I've played and HD-DVD in about a month, and this is the first problem I've had with it. Any thoughts.

2. To continue with HD-DVD weirdness.. I popped in "Knocked Up" and it asked to write a cookie to my player. Anyone else get that?

4. @#1

Mike, I had the same problem a few weeks ago with Heroes Season 1 Disc 2. I canceled the cookie download and it broke something. What I ended up having to do was go into the 360 memory management and there should be a section for the HD DVD drive. You will need to delete ALL the files stored on the player, mainly because it doesn't tell you what file is what.

After the files are deleted, try it again. If it doesn't work after that, the drive is probably dead.

5. @4,
I had the exact same problem with the exact same disc. How odd.

6. I wonder if Top Gun would be worth a purchase... Hmmm.

7. Thank god. That's the first movement in the right direction for HD in a long time. Combo should have never existed, unless it could be sold at the lower price point.

8. My HD DVD drive (a month old now) does not play the third movie in the Matrix trilogy, about 50% success rate on the second movie, and the Movie 300 ALWAYS asks me about cookies every time I play it, regardless of how I answer the question. 300 has also refused to play on occasion.

When I say a disc won't play, here's what happens: The drive spins up, the screen goes black and normally the anti-piracy warning would appear next. Instead a white screen with a Xbox 360 logo screen and an info blade slides on screen from the on the right and simply says "Cannot play disc" X Ok.

I called MS and they said ship it to them and they would replace it at no cost. I would appreciate this site either investigating this and posting a story, or linking to a story that has reported this problem, thanks.
