If there's one complaint people have about the Halo 3 beta it would have to be that the graphics aren't what some had hoped to see. Nobody is saying that the graphics are horrible, people are just saying that they aren't Gears of War quality or a gigantic leap over what Halo 2 has to offer. But if you really think about it, how much have Halo 3's graphics improved over its older bro? Gamespot dusted off their copy of Halo 2 on a mission to find out. They took a few screenshots from both Halo 2 and the Halo 3 beta and showcased them in complete image rollover fun. And, from what we see, the differences are quite noticeable. The textures and reflective surfaces in Halo 3 are far superior to Halo 2, even the geometry is beefed up. But that's expected on a next gen game. It all comes down to what your expectations are and if you feel the visuals took a big enough leap. What do you think about the comparison?

Of course the game doesn't look like Gears of War, the Halo graphic style is a simplistic look. That and Halo 3 supports twice as many players as Gears so the graphics have to be a bit less impressive if they want gameplay to stay smooth.

Frankie says the Graphics will be the last thing worked on, so by the time the game drops (sep 25th) it WILL look 10X better!

I think hopefully that page will shut people up about the graphics not being that much better. They instead need to just realize that Halo 2's graphics were possibly ahead of its time.
On a side note: comparison shots done by rollovers is the best

Halo is about game play not graphics. GW has great graphics and all that’s stuff but, the gameplay, kind of sucks. I mean very slow game play compare to Halo. So I think you can’t have GW graphics running high fps like halo does. I don’t care that much about graphics. I prefer a fast game play like halo instead of a huge, big and slow elephant lik GW

I for one could care less if the graphics get any better than what they are now. I played Beta quite a bit today and had an absolute blast. I never saw the Spartan Laser until today so when I was in a Ghost getting ready to mow someone over when this little red beam came from the dude's gun. I thought that it was just some laser sight on one of the new guns until his gun let out a hellacious blast of red fury upon my Ghost and that was the end of me. I ended up finishing that match on top but that was an awesome kill!

I have played the beta quite a bit, I am just having a blast and glad I am getting the chance to play the beta. I will wait for the final product to justify a comparison between H2 and H3.

I'll be happy if they can at least make it look as good as the Halo 3 teaser they showed at the end of Microsoft's E3 Keynote address last year. That was "supposedly" running in real-time using the new Halo engine. Microsoft has way too much riding on this title for it fall short of people's expectations. Although that Unreal3 engine it tough to beat.

I am more disappointed that they did not innovate much in the gameplay department. The graphics could be better, but that is secondary. The gameplay is essentially the same as Halo 2. I was hoping for more. A run would be nice, maybe a cover system, or something that hasn't been done yet. To me, it's only an incrimental step.

Snowbound already looks great. High Ground needs a little work. But this is only the Beta.
The single player campaign will look even better.

Alright, heres the deal. Just because Halo is your favorite game, many of you are having issues with the fact that its not your favorite looking game anymore. Heck its not even a 2nd or 3rd grafficly pleasing favorite. Even if they polish up the game before release the game will still look 2 or 3 years older than GOW. Don't agree? Get on the phone and call some 3rd party companies and C how many of them R flocking to Bungie trying to buy the Halo 3 Engine to develope games on...........Heh.

As long as it plays like a tighter version of H2, I don't give a shit what it looks like. If I can get used to the graphics in Twilight Princess, after being spoiled by the likes of Gears and Lost Planet, I'm sure I'll be fine with Halo 3.

My $0.02. The graphics (rendering) are terrific: tons of texture detail, more polys, soft shadows. So 'technically' it's gorgeous. What's disappointing is that the visual style is exactly the same as it was 6 years ago. We still have the same over-saturated color palette (Covenant gear = awful metallic purple) with a few minor tweaks. The LOOK simply hasn't made the jump to next gen (yet).
Gears got it right by using subtle dabs of color against realistic stone, metal and deep atmoshperics. The "Starry Night" commercial had the sense to tone the saturation down and add damage for realism. H3B as it stands simply looks dated and childish, even with the terrific rendering engine. Here's hoping the final is closer to the teaser trailer at least.
Think of it this way: the closer the graphics get to cinema quality, so too does the design need to mature and become more realistic. Would an intelligent alien race really drench every piece of gear with bright purple paint?! I don't think so.
The same way the X-men films dropped Wolverine's bright yellow spandex, Halo needs to dump the comic book color scheme...
Kudos to Bungie for sorting out the stellar framerate though - I haven't had a touch of slowdown yet. Amazing.

For once I'm actually GOOD at a Halo game! Bungie, don't change the weapons or the damage AT ALL.... except the missile speed, perhaps.
The graphics are GREAT for a beta! I only hope they evolve in the next few months a little. I'd like more dust, snow blowing, atmospheric niceties like that.

I play on a 27" sdtv, a really crappy 27" sdtv and to me the difference is still dramatic. The beta is far beyond anything I have seen in halo 2!

A:It's A Beta, not the final product
B:It has a different style from Gears, it was never meant to be compared.
C:It has a great frame rate and smoothness that would be sacrificed if the graphics were to look as good as say Gears of War
D:It's a multi-player beta, graphics are typically turned down in multi-player portions of games because of the load. Single player WILL look better I promise.
E:The water actually looks amazing thus far, and should only come in second to BIOSHOCK, where it is all about water. Here there is an obvious difference in graphics. DERP!
F: You all who continue to freak out and/or bash this beta because it is not what YOU want. Example:Above poster wanting a cover system...That would ruin halo completely, master chief does not hide behind things, he runs into battle. Derp!
Peace, and good post Dustin.
