Halo Wars audio designers make birds you can't see

The Halo Wars RTS Chapter on Bungie.net has conducted an interview with Ensemble Studios' Kevin McMullan and JD Smith, the two people in charge of the audio in Halo Wars. Again -- as seems to be a trend with Halo Wars -- you won't find any breathtaking news in the interview, but it does serve as an interesting glimpse into the development process. McMullan and Smith discuss how complex the soundscape is in RTS games, which combine the sounds of combat, dialogue, UI effects, and music all at once. They also talk about the challenge presented by creating sound for a Halo RTS that has to stay true to the series and yet still create its own identity. Finally, and perhaps most interesting, is the discussion of creating ambient sound effects. In particular, Smith mentions creating birds that aren't graphically represented in the game, but instead are represented solely through moving, intelligent sounds. Fascinating stuff. Even more fascinating is Smith's source file he used to create one of the game's bird calls: his 3-year-old daughter. Hit the "read" links below to read the interviews and hear the sound files.

Halo Wars designer talks controls, DLC, and more

Australian site Gameplayer recently managed to snag a few minutes with Graeme Devine, lead designer on Halo Wars at Ensemble Studios. While there are no earth-shattering announcements to be pulled from the interview -- sorry kids, still no confirmation of playable Covenant or Flood -- there are still a few tasty bits to be gleaned. First of all, Devine reemphasizes that one of the main goals of Halo Wars is to prove that RTS games can work without a keyboard and mouse.

With this in mind, the team at Ensemble created simple controls, consolidating similar actions -- such as different types of unit selection to presses of a single button. For example, single press of the A button will select one unit, a double click will select all units on screen, and a triple click will select the entire army. Another addition, all levels have been designed so that they can be completed without rotating the camera. Sure, players can rotate the camera, but they don't have to.

Finally, Devine mentions that there may be a level editor included with Halo Wars and also details Ensemble's plans for downloadable content. At the moment, new units and maps are definitely in the works. Even more exciting, Ensemble is considering releasing extra campaigns as well. Hit the "read" link for the full interview.

Bungie update: funny screens, Halo lore explored

The latest Bungie weekly update may not be packed to the brim with exciting things like upcoming playlists or talk of yet more new maps, but there are definitely some tasty morsels for Halo fans out there. First and foremost is a collection of some of the funniest Halo 3 screenshots out there. We're particularly enamored of the one above. We have dubbed it "Cojones" for reasons that we don't care to elucidate. Secondly, the update enumerates a few of the more interesting statistics about Halo 3. Our favorite is the number of people who have completed the Legendary campaign with every skull turned on. How many people have done this? Two. We can't figure out if those two people are insanely good or insanely patient. Either way, they're insane. Finally, the update points gamers to Ascendant Justice, a blog that has posted a three part series exploring the story revealed in Halo 3's terminals. Fans of the series should definitely read it. Hit the "read" link to explore the entire update.

Video: Halo 3 meets The A-Team

Honestly, who doesn't like a good A-Team parody? That's right, no one, because everyone likes The A-Team (and Mr T, of course). We've seen a Gears of War A-Team parody before and, frankly, we're surprised it took this long for a Halo 3 version to come across our proverbial desk. Created by the folks at No Scope Comics, the video poses the Master Chief, the Arbiter, and the other two Elites from Halo 3's co-op campaign as the whole gang from The A-Team. It's a surprisingly accurate take on the original intro actually. Enjoy.

Rumor: Bungie's next game a third-person Halo prequel

Let the rumor-rang fly! In the June issue of EGM, rumor hound Quarterman claims industry rumblings are pointing at a Halo prequel as Bungie's first title since parting from Microsoft. According to the popular rumor page of the magazine, the rumored game is a third-person action/shooter hybrid that will chronicle the early battles between the ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Troopers) and Covenant.

The Master Chiefless adventure would hit the Xbox 360 in late 2009 and may or may not be related to the "Peter Jackson Halo Project" we've been hearing about forever. Quarterman closes off the Halo-future tidbit telling readers to expect a massive reveal around the time Gears of War 2 hits retail.

From the description it sounds a little like "sci-fi Ghost Recon," doesn't it? Well, not to add fuel to the fire but considering former Ghost Recon lead designer and Ubisoft creative director Christian Allen jumped ship to Bungie in August 2007, this one could have some juice to it.

Meet Flip-Yap, the LEGO grunt

If you've been reading Xbox 360 Fanboy for very long, you should know two things by now. One, we like us some Halo. 2, we like us some toys. Put the two together and you've got a head-exploding ball of happiness. it is with this in mind to you that we present a Halo grunt made of LEGOs. Created by legohaulic, the little guy really is the pinnacle of craftsmanship and functionality. His name, if you must know, is Flip-Yap. Hit the "read" link for many more images.

Now, if you'll excuse us, we need to wrap a firecracker in some gum* and see if we can't "stick" Flip-Yap here.

Ensemble talks Halo Wars multiplayer

Halo.fr recently sat down with Graeme Devine of Ensemble Studios regarding Halo Wars. Of particular interest in the (interestingly translated) interview is further talk about how long multiplayer games should last. While it was reported earlier this year that Ensemble expects a typical match to last from 15-30 minutes -- RTS fanatics know that this is pretty short for the genre -- Devine notes that games can feasibly range from 10 to 45 minutes with the average landing at around 20 minutes. Probably the other most noticeable tidbit was Devine's response regarding local multiplayer. When asked about whether or not local mutliplayer was an option, Devine responded, "You can play against the AI in skirmish mode. That's a large component of the game." Reading between the lines, it sounds like competitive local multiplayer is out, but cooperative multiplayer is in. There are a few other interesting subjects covered in the interview like the fact that Ensemble will be including Easter eggs in the game for Halo fans, and it's worth a read. Follow the "read" link and give it a once over.

Ooh look! Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack heatmaps

The fervor preceding the Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack continues to grow (they're coming out next week, remember) with HBO letting the world know that Bungie has posted the heatmaps for all three upcoming new maps. As no one has access to the maps just yet, the heatmaps remain clean, preparing for the onslaught of death data that will flood them come April 15. So, all we have are empty overhead views of the new maps. Not very exciting, is it? Ah, who are we kidding, we're going to be staring at these things all day. Hit the "read" link to do some staring of your very own.

Video: Sneak peak of the Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack

Bungie posted a brand new ViDoc showcasing the upcoming Legendary Map Pack. Shot in a style similar to Red vs Blue (hmmm, sounds familiar), the video has Bungie's own map designers showing off each new map from within Halo 3 itself (one of them even gets a phone call -- is that Torgo's theme music?). The tour begins with Ghost Town, moves on to Avalanche, and finishes with Blackout. In addition to showing the maps, the Bungie folks also take time to show off some of the new Forge objects and the really spiffy Forge filters (we particularly like the grainy old-school film filter). One very cool addition is items that are specific to the maps, like shield doors in Avalanche that are designed to fit perfectly inside the map's entrances. Blackout also features closed doors that can be inserted into the various open doors, thus creating new paths for gameplay. All in all, the new maps and features are potentially looking to add quite a bit to Halo 3. Check out the video and let your thoughts be known.

Downloadable Halo 2 HD cut scenes now complete

An update to last month's story about HBO and their friends whose mission was to make all of Halo 2's cut scenes available to the masses in beautiful high definition. Progress moved along at a slow yet steady pace, with each week bringing a new downloadable HD cut scene and at the same time, as each video was uploaded, a piece of our soul was fulfilled. Now, after a few weeks of hard work, we're proud to announce that all of Halo 2's thirty-five cut scenes are now available for download in HD over at HBO. Grab the complete HD series and clog HBO's bandwidth pipes. Mr. Louis Wu would love us.

Bungie WWU: Legendary Forge Filters, Items

When the Heroic map pack was being touted by Bungie, their biggest talking point was the Forge possibilities with the map Foundry. With the Legendary map pack Bungie has been rather quiet regarding any sort of new Forge features. Until now. This week Bungie went all out, revealing the specialized Forge items for each of the three Legendary maps. Avalanche has walls, corners, ramps and watchtowers. Blackout has ramps and doors to block off room interiors. And Ghost Town has ramps, bridges and scaffolding.

The real star of the show however, are Forge Filters (see above for a preview of a few). Forge Filters are: "forge objects that change the camera settings to create a variety of effects." Have you ever placed your camera in a very specific location to achieve a precise image effect? Say inside of an explosion or something? Now with Forge Filters, you can CHOOSE the image effect you want applied to you image. And from ANY camera position, even during gameplay!

Wow. Do want.

Rumor: New writer takes on Halo movie script

Word on the internets (news that was published yesterday and is promised not to be an April Fools' joke) is that a new writer has taken on the Halo movie screenplay in hopes of cutting production costs and getting the project back on track.

According to the Latino Review, screenwriter Stuart Beattie (who penned the script for the upcoming G.I. Joe movie) took it upon himself to write a screenplay for the Halo movie, without Microsoft's knowledge and in his spare time because he's a huge fan of the franchise. The screenplay is said to be called Halo: The Fall of Reach and is based on Eric Nylund's novel of the same name. And unlike the official movie script that Microsoft had written with Master Chief playing a supporting role, Beattie's focuses on Master Chief's life and past. A script that only introduces the Covenant midway through, which would help cut down on the use of CGI and production costs thus making it more attractive to studios. If this turns out to be the real deal, hopefully Microsoft will at least take a look at the screenplay, maybe shop it around and make this darn Halo movie thing a reality. A more Master Chief focused movie that stays true to the novels and games is more up our alley anyway.

Fanstuff: Custom Halo Skull

Continuing our procession of custom Halo 3 work (though this time with no late night mess-ups on our part) we have a piece of real world custom Halo art coming to us directly from the crew over at Destructoid. Poster free touch used a variety of materials and tools to produce a highly impressive version of the Grunt Birthday Party Skull from Halo's 2 and 3. Starting the process with a Halloween prop and creating a plaster mold from there, free touch then skillfully sanded, painted, molded, and carved to eventually produce the sculpture that you see here. Molded after the so called "Viva Pinata" skull, free touch's real world skull also has a large candle shape embedded into the forehead and an input plug at the base. As of right now it's a one of a kind piece, though free touch does note that he has kept the mold, likely in case he has the urge to complete the set. We hope he does.

Bungie shows off their favorite things

In celebration of the Halo 3 Heroic Map Pack becoming free, a new video has popped up on Xbox Live Marketplace. The video features some of Bungie's favorite creations set in the Heroic Map Packs included maps Foundry, Rat's Nest, and Standoff. It's a pretty short video, but there are definitely some cool bits in there. We particularly like the Forge built house, the Brute shot wielding monitor, and of course, what appears to be Optimus Prime. Enjoy.

Also, if you've got some sweet Halo 3 creations, don't forget to submit them for our Community Content feature. We just might feature your custom maps and gametypes.

Halo Wars will not be your traditional RTS

After getting some quick hands on time with Halo Wars, CVG informs us that Ensemble Studios' latest RTS child is delivering on their promises and will be bringing something new to the console RTS market.

According to CVG, Halo Wars strays from the traditional console RTS controls as seen in Battle for Middle Earth and C&C, instead using a much more simplistic "paint" selection control scheme. Definitely a good thing. Ensemble is even going out of their way to redefine the RTS formula and instead of focusing the gameplay on resource management, you'll have to focus on time management and unit management. Just like in the Halo universe, decisions will have to be made strategically as you'll have to decide when to shoot and when to take cover. Simply stated, Ensemble knows they and Halo Wars are under the magnifying glass and are making it their number one priority to deliver a solid RTS experience. Our fingers are crossed.
