Update: Looks like Microsoft's Shane Kim has officially quashed this rumor. Details here.On Monday, Take-Two announced that it was delaying its annual meeting as a result of major shareholders requesting that CEO Paul Eibeler step down. The company delayed the meeting in order to come up with alternative solutions, with the most likely alternative being to sell the company. A trustworthy source from Rockstar Vancouver has told WorthPlaying that Microsoft may have already put in a bid to purchase the company (or at least expressed interest in doing so). With Take-Two in tow, Microsoft would own Grand Theft Auto, one of the most successful franchises in the industry. While this is a rumor of the highest order, the possibility is certainly intriguing.
Feel free to scream your jubilation, lamentation, or incredulity in the comments below.

Imagine this happened in like september, and a month before GTA 4 comes out Microsoft announces its pulled the plug on the ps3 version. People would riot everywhere (or buy a 360). It would be great.

But your forgetting the downside of buying Take Two! JACK THOMPSON! He would then have his sights on Microsoft.

Thats pretty intense if its true. The idea that Microsoft would own all of Take Two's current and past IP's is crazy. Sheesh if Microsoft keeps up the pace of collecting exclusives Sony might as well quit now...or at least fast track God of War III for the PS3. They'll need the selling power.

The guy is really a gnat to these companies. A pesk, but hardly a major threat. Certainly if he actually got somewhere with a case he'd be more of an issue, but I don't think that's even a factor.
A friend told me about this and it's certainly possible given the supposed stock shake-up that's coming up. Shareholders in the company would probably be happy about it for monetary reasons.
It'd be a big deal if it happens, particularly given the company's general reliance on Playstation 2/PSP hardware for GTA titles even now. Even the Wii would be affected with Manhunt 2.

Oh, I dont think this is a bad thing if microsoft buys Take 2, I would love it.

won't happen anytime soon. Why? Among a number of complications...2 words - Electronic Arts. As long as EA wants to be in the sports title business, MS can't alienate EA. And that is the power of the Madden franchise.
I guess one possible scenario is that MS buys Rockstar without the 2K Sports arm.

Since I have a 360 and a PS3, It doesn't matter much to me. Although, I would rather use the 360 controller over the SUXASSES controller!

OMG, imagine the chaos if they did this. Then, sometime in fall, announce that the PS3 version has been canceled. They would probably make that announcement around when Halo 3 is released.

@6 EA doesn't seem to mind that Sony releases its own sports games (MLB the show or NBA 07).
This could actually help them because they'd be the only multi-platform provider of traditional sports games.

I'd be happier if the sale went to Microsoft rather than to the likes of Electronic Arts.

MS probably has 10,000 lawyers on retainer just looking for something to do. They would drown JT. Take Two paying lawyers probably impacts them a lot more than it would MS.
I have a PS3 and 360. So, I'll be playing GTA4 no matter what. 360 is my system of choice (achievements baby). So, I hope it is at least on the 360. I wouldn't turn my back on playing it on the PS3 if that ws my only choice.

i would probably die laughing if microsoft pulled the plug on everything but the 360 version...and then it would be a 360 exclusive. can you say system seller?

I think that MS is putting in a bid just because think about how shitty it would be for them if Sony bought Take Two. Think about that one...

I'd love to see this happen just for the Jack Thompson factor. Microsoft's legal team would squish him like the ant that he is...

pulling the plug on the ps3 version would be expected.
what would be even better is if they didnt pull the plug.
that would be genious.
it makes sonys ps3 fanboys like micorsoft a little more and at the same time every purchase of a ps3 copy brings in cash for micosoft.
its like rubbing it in sonys face without hurting the consumer.

@9 That is because Sony has enough market dominance to tell EA they are going to do whatever they want. MS, not so much. That may change over time but the installed base for each console is a stong determinant of negotiating leverage.
I predict there will be a tipping point where MS is not as dependent on EA and Madden but can you imagine the success of the 360 if they didn't have EA? Or if Sony got a bunch of EA exclusives on the PS3 and/or Wii? Like EA or not they own some powerful IP.

If MS bought TTWO then they would take all of the 2k licenses with them, and they would likely stop publishing games on the other consoles.
The problem with that is that it would seriously damage the revenues and hence the worth of TTWO as a publisher.

I'd be really surprised if Rockstar wasn't somehow spun off as part of this.
Buying them out would be EXTREMELY expensive, and they might well be resistant to it (Shane Kim has made comments on resistant personnel previously). However, other parts of the company might have even more value but come at an easier to swallow price.

Virtua Fanboy- Sony couldnt afford t.two. It's a steal at under 2 billion, but they couldnt do it. MS could do it easily, that is a smallish chunk of their cash they have laying around.
