No custom game types in Shadowrun

In an interview with GameSpot, FASA's Bill Fulton revealed that Shadowrun will not support custom game types for multiplayer. In other words, players will only be able to play the three specific game types that ship with Shadowrun when it launches this June. Fulton told GameSpot that FASA decided not to have custom game types because it caused player confusion. In his words: "we don't support playing public multiplayer games with custom modes. It often just leads to awkward situations where you join a game playing something weird that you don't want to play." We're not really sure we follow Fulton's reasoning, as custom games are typically limited to friends only. At any rate, Fulton goes on to say that there is nothing that prevents players from agreeing to certain "house rules," but Shadowrun contains no hard code to support them.

So, if you want to play nothing but snipers and katanas, you'll have to rely on the honor system. Does this development affect your anticipation of Shadowrun?

1. What anticipation of Shadowrun? This is quickly becoming one of the most over publicized yet undesired games since Dead or Alive Xtreme 2.

2. I for one am looking forward to this game. It will be nice to play my pc counterparts. I don't see this as the game that will dethrone Gears of War but I do feel it will open doors to more console vs pc games in the future.

3. It's not like Gears of War has any grand custom game settings and from what I hear, people seem to play that a little bit.

4. I agree completely with Comment #1. I've never anticipated Shadowrun, and I don't anticipate that I'll be anticipating it in the near future.

5. Really, that's you guys. It's anticipated enough by other people that it's worth talking about.

6. im a beta tester and trust me,
you have alot to be looking forward too.

7. I'm also a beta tester.....These game has alot going for it... it offer a lot of interesting things. I think once people get a chance to try it for themselves and see what us beta testers have been experimenting with, they would have a better opinion about the game. As for the beta testing goes... So far so good... It's really fun... Something different for a change...

8. -this game is going to open doors for gamers and give online multiplayer a breath of fresh air.

-i think custom matches are overrated anyway.

-whenever i go on gears of war, hosts (in most cases) leave the rules on default settings anyway.

9. I'm a beta tester too, it's an ok game. It's just a manic shooter with some RPG elements. Nothing too over the top here......rent it first.....

10. i wouldnt mind using the "honor system", everyone ive played with on cod2 didnt seem to cause any trouble when i wanted to play a certain weapon only game. and heck im still waiting for shadowrun, gonna be first in line!

Posted at 7:28PM on Mar 16th 2007 by Miguel

11. No single player, just multiplayer. Ok.

Just multiplayer but you can customize anything? The game is probably gonna be fun but honestly, what does it have that's gonna give it some replay value. What if I wanna play it a year from now and nobody else is?

I hope that this is a $49 (or less?) title. If not maybe they'll have it for rent somewhere.

12. I hate it when I come into a game where a bunch of 13 year olds are using the "honor system" for some stupid game type. Maybe they'll to an update later on.

Posted at 7:37PM on Mar 16th 2007 by Virtua Fanboy

13. After the wild afternoon I had playing the beta, this game doesn't need em.

Posted at 7:44PM on Mar 16th 2007 by thw

14. The article is mistaken. There are no custom games in PUBLIC matches. If you read the original interview, they say private matches with friends will in fact be customizable.

15. Anyone who's played a round of Michael Meyers on Rainbow Six 3 knows how fun the honour system can be.

Posted at 8:17PM on Mar 16th 2007 by Tim

16. Michael Myers on Rainbow Six?

Posted at 8:25PM on Mar 16th 2007 by Justin U

17. No way, I'm looking forward to it eitherway. Specialized game types aren't usually much fun anyway.

Posted at 9:58PM on Mar 16th 2007 by Icehawk

18. So how much is this game? $39.99? Because I won't be paying any more than that. I can accept the idea of buying a game with no single player, but if thats they route they are taking, the multiplayer better be f*cking solid. I can't even make a friggin custom match? Wow, A for effort FASA.

Posted at 10:41PM on Mar 16th 2007 by Logan

19. Well how does it play? I saw you playing it yesterday, but was too busy with a gears match to send a a message :-P

Posted at 12:27AM on Mar 17th 2007 by Cwolf267

20. If Shadowrun delivers a solid experience, I have no problem with the constraints. It seems that FASA's focus is to provide a fun, balanced multiplayer game, which I support, but with such limited functionality (no LAN, no SP, no custom modes), it's only worth $20 at most to me, even if it is amazing.
