What's the big difference between a 90nm and a 65nm processor? Well, a lot of cash if you are Microsoft or Sony. Arstechnica.com has taken a look at the battle between Microsoft and Sony and the journey to get their respective consoles' processors to be smaller. Not only is there a bunch of technical improvements with a smaller die, but the hardware cost would drop significantly (roughly $50 per console). We don't fully agree with the article's "race" argument, but think that whichever company can do the most with the processor change will be the victor. Whether it be price cuts, a sleeker console design, or the removal of the huge power brick, it's all about what the companies do with the new technology. Which begs the question, who would be up for getting a new Xbox 360 if it had a smaller processor?[Via Digg]

A 65nm 360 would mean less heat generated and probably more reliable.
It meansa hell of a lot more to sony though as ~M~S currently makes a profit on each 360 anyway so already has room to price cut (they are just talking the profit in they asctually need to price cut)
Sony on the other hand are losing a lot of money on each console so need to reduce their costs quickly

I'm explicitly waiting for the 65nm CPU before I get one due to all the reliability reports, and I doubt I'm alone on this. Sales should spike nicely once the new machines are out.
PS3? Meh. Only a $200 price cut and a new Sucker Punch game could get me to even consider one.

I'd sell my old Xbox 360 and would buy the new one

Don't forget that all of your downloaded content is tied to your current hardware. Unfortunately you can't get that transferred when you buy new hardware.
I am actually holding off buying XBL content until I get the new hardware, which should be more reliable.

anything you purchase on xbl can be downloaded as many times as you want, once you buy it. so even if you lose your system due to failure or whatever, you can just re-download your stuff for no additional cost.

Also...you can simply remove your hard drive and put it on a different machine - since that's where all the content is stored.

I don't think I'd go as far as selling my 360 for the new one, but should my xbox ring turn red one fateful day I would make sure I get the new version as a replacement.
And whilst I understand people holding off to buy the new version, I do not regret picking up my Xbox last October whatsoever.. I did a bit in November, but there were rumours of price cuts back then (like 2 weeks after i bought it) and that kind of thing can obviously annoy.. but looking back now I had nothing to worry about.

If it means the 360 will run quieter then I'd def have one! If the console can be made smaller then even better.
As for the people holding out for the 65nm CPU - why? I reckon it'll be another 9-12 months at the very least before a product is actually available on the shelves. Think of all the 360 gaming goodness you'll be missing out on while you wait for the next revision!!
I understand there are problems with the current revision. But out of the 10 million 360 owners it's only a small percentage - and obviously you only ever hear when people have problems, not when everything is running fine.

I won't. Also, I don't think a new 65 nm processor will make the 360 quiter. As it is the DVD player and fans that make the noise. Mostly the Dvd player though.

Yeah, unless the revision adds some noise dampening to the DVD drive, the new one won't be substantially quieter than the old one.
I'd potentially be up for buying another 360, but just a die shrink wouldn't really be enough to prompt me to do it. A price drop and form factor change might do it though.

The processor update won't change much with regard to noise or performance. It will, however change the margin for Microsoft on each console sold. There's really no point in selling a perfectly good 90nm console for a 65nm one.

I don't think I'd spend a lot of money for a new box, but HDMI would certainly seal the deal.
Oh, and it doesn't beg the question. It raises the question.

Actually, I'd just be up for a 360 that lasts longer then 3-4 months no matter what processor/power brick is attached.
I'm on refurb number four right now and I bought my first one at launch. Each refurb I've gotten back from repair has been no newer then 11-2005...
When they move to a smaller processor is there going to be a whole other round of hardware failures with the new design? I'd be VERY gunshy of getting a redesigned unit till its been out a year or so.

Apparently newer 360s (mfg 11/06 and later) have new DVD drives which are considerably quieter.

Yeah, just saw that.
That, combined with the die shrink, will probably push me to buy a new one. I'll most likely turn the old one into a Christmas gift.

i have a launch xbox(november 16th, 2005) and have another coming my way from another contest, but as soon as these new boxes with 65nm tech and the new Benq drives are in stock everywhere, i'll likely purchase one just to support the cause and to show that im a xbox360fanboy.

I don't care about that shit. I don't mind a BIG console if it means no fry-outs, etc. One again, people are worried about the wrong fucking things.
