Weirdest gaming console names ... Xbox 360?

Games.net has a write up about what they feel are the weirdest game console names ... ever. Not only does the Xbox 360 make the list at number five, but somehow the Nintendo Wii came in at the bottom of the list at number ten. Not only that, but according to Games.net the Xbox 360 name is more weird than the GameCube, Dreamcast, CDi, and N-Gage. We just don't get it ... don't you remember all the hoopla over the Nintendo Wii's (I don't even know the plural form of Wii for monkey sake!) name? Ahh screw it, the Xbox 360's name is sexy and we all know it. At least our white box of fun wasn't called the ColecoVision 360 ... we totally dodged a bullet there.

1. I thought the n-gage was a good name. "N" for Nokia and "engage" for the promise of playing against people wirelessly.

Posted at 9:00PM on Dec 9th 2006 by BlessedBullet

2. To me, "Playstation" sounds like a Chucky Cheese retaurant type place. Games for kids, and crappy food. "Hey Mom, can we go to the Playstation? Please please please? I've been good." Either that, or it's a Cable channel. "Hey, did you catch that new show on the Play station?"

3. I would switch a lot of those around. 'Wii' is pretty damn stupid. #1 definitely goes to "Wonder Swan".... What the F*CK?!?

Posted at 9:10PM on Dec 9th 2006 by Slick Rick

4. i think insulting colecovision is highly unnecessary. I owned the adam and felt absolutely content with it until the nintendo 64 came out and the coleco broke down. Just because you didn't enjoy it doesn't mean you should insult it.

5. You know, Wii isn't really that weird. It's not directed at an English audience. It's like the perfect name if you live in Japan.

But it's obvious that that site has some messed up judges :P

6. I like the name of the N-Gage, as gaming is very much engaging! It's such a shame Nokia came up with it. Nokia needs to keep well away from gaming.

Posted at 9:55PM on Dec 9th 2006 by Joe

7. The entire list was just wrong and stupid. Most of the names on there are fairly normal, as far as video game systems go. It's just some loser opinion that happens to be wrong.

8. Maybe Wii came low down because there are more people who actually know what Wii actually means..............look it up numb nuts

9. Where Microsft limited itself is when they named it X-box, theres nothing wrong with that, it just means people will expect it to always be....well....a boxed shape :S If it was circular, it wouldn't make sense, and although the thought of a circular console seems stupid now, sphere shaped consoles could be the thing of the future :S

The handheld would have to be renamed, Nintendo doesn't have to rename, bu they do anyway, but it still is Nintendo, Playstation can leave theres as it is as PSP, but what will Micro call thiers Xboxportable, its not a box :S And as Xbox is the signature name, anything else seems sorta out of place :(

10. Well the Xbox 360 is kinda weird. I mean think about it. Nowhere on the unit do you find an X, and it's not exactly a circle or sphere either, so where does the 360 part come from? Moreover, its shaped like a giant I when stood vertically. Therefore, shouldn't the 360 be called i-box?

Posted at 1:08AM on Dec 10th 2006 by corey r

11. @pulse

uhhh, just fold in the bottom right appendage on the last x

it's a y

xboy

&since when have boxes been automatically cubical in any sense? ever heard of hat boxes? i'm pretty sure box just means it holds shit, not that it can be stacked up to build a fort or something.

&yes, a circular console does seem stupid. it would probably have to take up three-dimensions.

try using "cylindrical" or "spherical" next time unless you actually meant a round flat object.

&@corey r

umm, what dude?

if you're going to be a bitch about it, there are two x's on the drive tray. but that's a cop-out. the x comes from direct-x if you know your history. and the 360 is used to mean (purportedly) a revolutionary approach (though a bit of a stretch). and there's the circle of light.

granted, john q public won't understand/know any of this, but at least there's rhyme and reason. they didn't just pick the name out of a random number generator or play drunken blind scrabble.

&to make this comment as long as possible,

the article really pissed me off. ignorance upon the 360's name (see above). clunky sounding or clunky looking? fix your bias, bud.

the gamecube i think is a good name. not the best ever, but much better than most upon this list.

&i got really pissed about the dreamcast thing. it has a great sounding name and flows with the manufacturer's name too ("sega dreamcast" rolls off the tongue better than "microsoft xbox 360", but that's an irrelevant point). granted, the system failed financially, but mainly due to cynics like this guy and this has nothing to do with the name.

&the swirl comment really threw me over the edge. the swirl is a godsend. it would be hard for me to decide btwn this and the 360 x logo (both dead sexy in my book). the swirl looked great on every product and the startup sequence was very very enthralling. overshadows everything else (save the 360, and the gamecube's was pretty nice).

sounds to me like this guy is just biased against a few consoles and wanted an inconspicuous way to show it. thought by including the wii he could make it without a hitch. wrong.

12. Nintendo's devoted fanatics abound. The media adores them, despises Sony and has a love/hate relationship with Microsoft's games division.

"Wii" is hands-down the most ridiculous name ever applied to ANY electronics product, let alone game device. Period.

Note the angsty, knee-jerking Ninty freaks getting aggro about their Wii-name. How DARE anyone imply that's a dumb name! Why, it's PERFECT if you're Japanese 'cause, uh, well it just IS.

Fanboys = lose.

13. I think XBOX 360 is the perfect name for our console....They really thought this through think about it X is the signature letter for us. that will never change. Box is written b/c our console is a box. And I think alotta ppl have forgotten that 360 deals primarily with the Ring of Power. 90 180 270 360.......
Its the perfect marketing name...I really dont think we should doubting Gates on how he should develop his consoles, the guy isnt kutaragi...he actually has a brain.... so enjoy it ppl we're on the winning team.

14. I'm not sure how you pick on ColecoVision (which was a cool name at the time) without mentioning Intellivision or Microvision, both which preceeded it.

And I question the mention regarding the leather business. Yes, Coleco started life that way in the 50s, selling leather craft kits, but that business was sold off by Coleco by the 60s. Coleco was then known for making plastic kiddie pools. By the 70s they expanded into electronic games, and by the 80s they were invovled in console games, a home computer (which destroyed the company) and dolls such as the cabbage patch kids. By the time the company went bankrupt, they were primarily known for still selling cabbage patch kids. Hasbro came in and bought the assets, and Coleco was no more.

As far as strange gaming names...

I'd probably include Channel-F (from Fairchild Semiconductor) or Nintendo's Game and Watch series.

15. For those who dont know, Xbox isnt a stupid name at all. It makes a tonne of sense. DirectX Box, thats the nature of the name.

16. instead of monkey's sake, a pun could be made by using for moniker's sake
just my two cents

17. Why the hate on the Dreamcast, that name was awesome.

Posted at 9:57AM on Dec 11th 2006 by Raziel

18. I thought N-Gage was a great brand name.

Xbox was cool too. Jaguar + Nomad were strange and so was Wonderswan.
