Tiger Woods content is cheating

We swear, we don't just come to work wondering how we can hate on EA. Honestly, we don't, but we couldn't help pointing something out. There's a new batch of downloadable content for Tiger Woods 07. Sure, everyone loves downloadable content, but this new "content" stinks.

Unlock Golfer:-200 points
Pro Shop – 300 points
Maxed out Player – 200 points
Unlock Courses – 200 points

As a quick explanation, all of these downloads unlock content in the game. The thing is, it unlocks content in the game that you can unlock just by playing it. What it comes down to is that EA is basically charging us for cheat codes. You want every single golfer in the game, but you don't want to unlock them yourself? That'll be $2.50. Maybe you'd like to have every item in the Pro Shop. No problem: $3.75. Can't be bothered to raise your golfer's stats? Easy, we'll max him out for $2.50. And of course, what good is a maxed out golfer if he can't play on those pesky locked courses. We'll just unlock those for another $2.50.

Now, we're not going to completely condemn this. Many people have complained that they don't have time to unlock things in their games. All they want is to be able to play with their friends, using all the same content. That's all well and good, but we can't help feeling that things like this are chipping away at the soul of gaming. Seriously, why play the game at all if you're just going to strip it of all accomplishment? Put simply, it's bullsh*t. And probably a goldmine for EA. God help us all if Konami charges us for "the code" when Contra hits XBLA.

2. It really is unbelievable, 10 bucks for cheat codes . Next year well be paying 4.50 to unlock the basketball in order to play a game a of live, 2.50 for sneakers or the player will fall down and slip in their socks. Ive been a big fan of EA but their micromanagement is something I just will not support. Im done with it though, Ill go elsewhere or just not play their games unless it comes in 100% out of the box. Paying for "extra stadiums" and alternate jerseys is stupid.

3. Better that than making people download half the courses at launch.

No idea what sasoon is getting at here.

An interesting question is whether downloading the cheat will give you any achievements that would have been related to unlocking those courses etc.

4. I hate to be the one to chime in as the "if you don't want it, don't buy it" guy, but this really doesn't need any criticism. EA is rightfully capitalizing on lazy gamers who would rather not earn the unlockable content in their games. Captialism at it's finest.

What I would complain about is the people who will surely absolutely buy this stuff. Chances are it WILL give you the achievement points if there are any related, and I can see the gamerscore e-penis avengers spending every last dollar to pump their egos quickly.

5. I don't see a problem with it... 2-3 months after the game is out. Release these codes a few months after the title has started collecting dust. And maybe some people would like to get golfers and courses they couldn't unlock in the game playing it without cheat codes. It would freshen up the game and draw new interest. But the week the game has come out. Stupid move. C'mon use your brains EA.

6. For every time EA comes up with something good, like the SSX series, they come out with 100X the garbage. Man, I hate this company.

7. Agreed, empt. I'm not a 16 year old kid with hours to waste after school playing games. I like to finish every game I have that has a beginning and end, but I don't like playing the same level 20-30 times. I'm getting a bit pissed with Dead Rising now, having not played it for about two weeks after numerous attempts to get past one point. Heck, I'd shell out a few points for a quick level up there, just because I can't dedicate my life to a game. More power to you EA!

8. When I first saw these downloads, I was quite surprised... I thought the only way to unlock these players and courses was through the download.

If that is not the case, then I may reconsider picking up TW07 (I want to be able to earn everything, not be forced to buy it). As far as the cheaters who don't earn their characters or courses... I can't say I really care, as I am unlikely to play this game online anyways.

Welcome to MS' new macropayment system, or not... the choice is still yours.

9. Best. Idea. Ever.

Personally, I hate Tiger Woods games because it takes just too damn long to unlock *anything*. I hate playing with weak golfers that can't shoot more than 100 yards. The entire game is just frustrating. I also don't care about career mode. I just want to sit down with my friends and play some golf with characters that don't suck. I can do that for a mere 10 extra dollars?

Done deal.

10. "Seriously, why play the game at all if you're just going to strip it of all accomplishment?"

while the idea of charging for this leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, I also don't agree with the above statement....

There's no reason why anyone should question my motives for playing a game, no matter what the reason. To Each His Own, I say....

If I want to buy a (single player) game, and never play it without a God cheat, that's my business, and no one should be able to stop me.....

11. Stuff like this should be free so stop being so happy that your paying 10 dollars for it as an option. Also number 4 posted an interesting statement about these paid cheats will they unlock the achievements?

Posted at 1:10PM on Oct 16th 2006 by Brian

12. This is lame... soon they are going to charge you an incremental fee just to progress to the next level. Charging for cheats... disgusting.

Posted at 3:08PM on Oct 16th 2006 by joey

13. Guys who are going ot buy these cheat codes, This is WRONG because we have always gotten cheat codes in the past for free. Now EA thinks its right to charge lazy gamers to unlock everything. You shouldent have to pay a mere $10 just so you can play the way you want with your friends from the get go.

Instead, you should have to pay $0 and take 20 seconds to visit gamefaqs for a code.

14. The dumbasses that'll support this tripe are the same schmucks that'll fork over to Fileplanet or Gamespot for "faster or exclusive downloads." Essentially paying for demos. Is it thier right? Of course it is, it's everybody's right to get fleeced if they're too stupid to realize that it's happeneing. These are the first idiots that will be crying when things don't seem like such a good deal anymore. Pay to get matched with an opponent maybe?

Posted at 7:26PM on Oct 16th 2006 by NotOfThisEarth

15. I think the important point here is that game developers now have an incentive to make their games needlessly difficult to encourage their audience to buy the cheats, uber-item, etc.

Posted at 7:29PM on Oct 16th 2006 by Danny

16. This is no problem whatsoever. People have been paying for cheats since the NES days. It was called a Game Genie back then, now it's called an XBL download. So what? As someone who doesn't use cheats, never owned a Game Genie, and would never pay for Tiger Woods unlockables that I didn't earn, I say make the lazy bastard cheaters pay. Maybe it will make them better gamers, after they realize how much they've spent.

Posted at 1:27AM on Oct 17th 2006 by Bob

17. i think its a good idea, not all gamers have the time or desire to want to unlock everything but may still like to play a particular course etc

i think it would be a good idea if they stopped you gaining the achievements for downloading content

EA are not changing or restricting the game at all so not destroying 'the soul' of the game, they are just helping out the casual / social gamer who wants to have a few rounds on a particular course

i don't usually comment on blogs but was so appauled with the narrow minded opinion of this article that thought i should

18. I heard that EA was going to charge a per minute fee on voice chat in there games like a pay a you go cell phone
