Hockey showdown brings back the memories

The current hockey demo showdown (NHL 07 vs NHL 2K7) on XBLM is bringing back fond memories of EA vs. 2K rivalries of yore. For many grid iron gamers, that old football favorite, ESPN NFL 2K5 for Xbox, still compares favorably with the latest Madden in several respects, especially presentation (Half-time highlights with Chris Berman!). Would Madden 07 really be a better game if EA didn't have a monopoly over the NFL license? How do you think the NFL 2K series would have developed given the chance?

To tell the honest truth I still prefer the 2k series over Madden. This is comming from a person who sayed up until 3am lastnight with my new born daughter and Madden on the 360.
The 2k series was just more fun to me. I even liked NFL Fever better than Madden, but I guess thats because I broke the top 50 in the world on that game.

I still play nfl2k5 because honestly, MADDEN SUX, im not her to show my hate. but the gameplay is what matters and 2k5 stil plays better. There is just so much wrong with madden. this year i tried to like it, i really did. i even rented the 360 version of 07. and i still prefer 2k5. Man i wish they had gotten exclusivity for football, and EA with baseball. or neither gotten either.

Yeah #1, but there were only 50 people that owned NFL Fever :)

2K Football had better gameplay and was a better complete package imo. Big loss for the games industry. Madden has been stagnating lately. Note that Madden for the 360 had LESS features than the XBOX version. This is an old tactic by EA. They need you to buy the next year's version so hold back a feature. In NHL Hockey for Sega, they'd take out fighting then put it back in just to increase sales. A tactic that worked. To me, its yanking around the consumers and I hope they lose money on Madden soon.

I pre-purchased NHL 07 a few months ago. I was so hyper to download the demo. Finaly when it was done, I jumped right into a blazing game of hockey.....hmmm shootup of hockey. What where they thinking. That would like having a demo of Madden with only punting available. I was surprized to see NHL 2K7 demo released the next day. I downloaded this demo, and was able to enjoy my balzing game of hockey...well blazing period of hockey, but it was blazing. As a result of this, I have since also pre-purchase NHL 2K7, this after having decided to skip this year. Good show 2K Sports.

I still play ESPN NFL 2k5 on my xbox. A lot of people still do for a 3 year old game that had ONLINE LEAGUES that EA still doesn't have the technology/brains to make yet.

I keep trying to like Madden because my friends keep buying it for their PS2 but it seems to be getting worse the last few years. The 360 version I rented stutters every time you press a button - this is the most powerul console on the market. 2K5 is still much more polished than Madden 2007. People have got to stop buying this crap until they make it better. Atleast rent it first.

If nfl 2k5 was the same and they realeased new rosters over the internet I would skip school for a week, I mean 2k5 was so much smoother and looked freaking great for a xbox 1 game

NFL 2K5 ROCKED!!! From the first time I played 2K sports titles (football, basketball, etc), I have not purchased an EA sports game since. And I agree totally with Mike Berglund...If 2K5 updated its rosters online every year...The end product would be leaps and bounds over Madden 07!

2K5 was the shit. It was so great. Charging up while running the ball was the best. I also loved the Crib, having to earn points to buy shit for your crib, the trophies, pre-game show with Virtual Boomer, replays during the halftime show (which was only on the Xbox). Too bad this game will NEVER be backwards compatible. Even worse, my Xbox died.

2k will always be number one.... hockey should be the most intense rivalry this year cause 2k has always had the better reviewed hockey game, but EA is really trying this year.

It's hard to compare the 2 demoes though... NHL 07 has wayyyy better graphics and overall presentation, but 2k has always been better at the actual gameplay, and the 5 minute game seems awesome. comparing a shootout and gameplay is difficult.

i'm buying 2k7 first no matter what.... solely because of 2k's kick ass online modes

I just wish 2K Sports upgraded the presentation (menus, non-gameplay graphics) and the graphics in their games up to EA's standards.

The glitch is the only thing EA has going on for them in favor of 2K. If 2K had that, it'd be a no contest.

Oh, and 2K Sports needs to start doing QA on their games (re: MLB 2K6, and all other 2K6 games with freezing problems). But given that nobody else does that either (re: the Far Cry Instincts article), I guess that's just the licks we, the consumers, have to take, for now.

I actually just played 2K5 earlier today. Freaky. I love it. The passing is not as good as Madden though. Why do the wideouts have stone hands? And the quarterbacks can't throw it short range to either side to save their lives. But that's it. Halftime and post game highlights are still freaking aweseome. And SportsCenter at the end of the week? How cool is that! I haven't bought a Madden game since.

NFL 2K5 is still the best and YOU CAN UPDATE IT TO CURRENT ROSTERS see here.

Of course it still doesn't work on the 360.

EA has destroyed the Football games with the loss of 2K just like they destroyed the NASCAR racing on the PC with the loss of Papyrus sims.

Thanks EA for screwing us out of our choices...

Yeah I agree with Chris, the Enhancement Pak is hot!

I can't wait until the finished roster drops. I think it was supposed to come out a while ago, but one of the guy's family members got murdered and his friend's Mother got badly ill. Damn shame man. Life is crazy.
