MS patents 360 TV?

Microsoft's 5000th patent intends to make Xbox Live celebrities of us all. Most of us are familiar with the Gotham TV feature in Project Gotham 3, but MS wants to take the concept to a whole 'nother level. Patent No. 6,999,083 concerns a "System and method to provide a spectator experience for networked gaming." From the summary:

The present invention provides a system and method that generates a spectator experience corresponding to an occurrence of an associated game or event. The spectator experience can be generated in real time as a function of the associated game or event. Alternatively or additionally, the spectator experience could include portions of a prior occurrence of an associated game or event, such as to provide highlights, instant replays, or other enhancements for the resulting spectator experience. Each occurrence of a game or event varies over time in response to contributions and/or interactions of one or more participants (e.g., players) of each respective game or event.

...Another aspect of the present invention provides an infrastructure or portal (e.g., a Website) to access spectator related services. The portal may provide information about the occurrence of one or more games or events. By way of illustration, the portal may include a user interface, which presents information about available occurrences. The available occurrences can correspond to real time games or events or to delayed versions of games or events. The portal also can include visual and/or audio information about the available occurrences including, for example, identifying the name for each game or event, the number of active participants, the number of spectators, etc. The portal further includes user interface elements that can be activated to connect to a spectator experience corresponding to a desired occurrence of a game or event.

I hope this means that one day you'll be able to log in at the office and watch your autistic brother impress the universe with his skill at Rockstar Presents Bocci Ball. How far can you see this type of feature going?

1. I know video game television is huge in Asia and everyone in the United States wants their 15 seconds, we all have ADD so it has to be shorter than 15 minutes, of fame so this seems like the perfect fit. I know I'll be logging on to watch others play while I'm trapped at work.

2. Can't believe no one has anything to say about this but me. Should I freestyle or something?

3. I'd like to just watch other people play a game before I personally take it online. Even if I don't own the game.

You can tell a lot about a game by how people react to events in online mode.

4. Awesome, someone else finally joined the discussion and you're definitely right. I would love to watch, if a demo isn't available, I'm looking at you GR:AW, a game being played to get some sense of it before putting down $60 for it.

5. Watching games online would be a killer feature to have, if I could watch someone playing BF2 or GR:AW I would love it...

I often watch Gotham TV to see a race on the F1 circuit, one of my favorite tracks, so if that happens it should become a key factor in selling games...

You really can tell a lot from watching someone playing the game... if that's where their going with this... but if you ask me, don't be surprised if you don't start seeing advertisements for games and commercials on the TV feature.

You know what I would like to see is X360 TV a channel you could watch like a cable channel but from your 360 that would show upcoming games and behind the scenes of whats happen in game development as well as interviews with people and game tournaments and reviews of X360 accessories like faceplates wireless headphones
Just everything Xbox 360 24/7 all day all night why cant we get that.

6. This is great news. Me and my clan have been playing a lot of tournament basketball on NBA 2K6. 2K Sports has done a great job of integrating their Web site with the game for stats, real-time drafts, etc. The only thing missing is a spectator mode so you can watch your buddies duke it out. Hopefully, this patent means such a feature is coming.

One last thought: How about if you could influence the action in some slight way? Or have mini-games for spectators while you're watching the basketball game from a virtual seat? What if fan brawls broke out in the stands?

7. It's an idea rich in concept, but in actuality watching other people play games is touch-and-go subject matter. In the comfort of a living room watching friends dueling it out can be fun. As was the old arcade vibe of watching dudes play a hot game. I still remember the crowds gathered around MK in their hey-day...

... but anything else can tire quickly because it's a lot more fun to play than watch. Spectating while I'm dead in a fps or such is fine because it's a holdover while I wait to be involved again and it holds the atmosphere, but prolonged watching? I don't think so.

With real life friends there is a certain emotional interest attached to watching. They are your friends, it's fun, you swap in and out getting involved, you laugh you swear, you eat and drink shit and talk. In the arcades it was the act of being there - live and real life - watching and being part of something - you were somewhat involved.

Streaming live video over a computer or console can't emulate any of that on a prolonged basis. It would be the kinda thing that would start off as "cool" but you'd soon question why you were watching random people play instead of actually playing yourself.

If it was TV-based (like others have said) then this idea might have some weight because it could be balanced out. It wouldn't have to be non-stop spectating - they could interject a dose or reviews, previews, interviews, hype, etc.
