Video: Meet the Ronin gang from Saints Row 2

A new trailer has been released showcasing one of the new gangs in Saints Row 2, the Ronin. Hailing from the Far East, the Ronin have a penchant for flashy jackets and swords. Honestly, if people can walk around in broad daylight with swords on their backs, we'd say that the game's city of Stillwater is in bad shape. It looks like the Saints have their work cut out for them as well if all the action in the trailer is any indication. Check out the trailer after the break (NSFW thanks to some language and some pretty nasty violence).

Red Faction Guerrilla beta drops

Not too long ago Fileplanet announced that the Xbox 360 beta for Red Faction: Guerrilla was being offered exclusively to paid subscribers and we ignored it. Who wants to pay for a beta, anyway ... except for everyone who initially bought Crackdown, that is. Today we finally want to talk about the Red Faction: Guerrilla beta because it is now available for anyone who signs up for a free account and completes a short registration questionnaire on Fileplanet.

Download the 652MB beta today and let us know what you think!

Tera Patrick takes it off for Saints Row 2

You may have heard that Tera Patrick -- do not Google her name at work! -- was "hired" as a "special" "producer" on Saints Row 2. It looks like we now have an idea of what she'll be "contributing" to the game's development: developer diaries. The first dev diary is really just a tease of future Tera Patrick dev diaries. She gabs about the game's features and takes off her clothes, all with the kind of forced sexiness that only a porn star can deliver.

We miss Gary Busey. Find the (slightly NSFW) video after the break.

THQ: Saints Row 2 and GTAIV are 'very different'

Saints Row 2 will be releasing on August 26th October 14th and THQ wants everyone to know that it isn't just a GTAIV clone, that Saints is its own creation and is an experience "totally different" than what Rockstar offers. Or so says THQ CEO Brian Farrell who, during a recent conference call, admitted that "we're always concerned about GTA as a competitor" but mentioned that with Saints Row 2 they "have a very differentiated product in this open-world genre" that has more "tongue-in-cheek ... silly, over-the-top gameplay." And we have no reason to doubt Mr. Farrell. We like Saints Row for what it is, not trying to be overly serious and focusing more on the gameplay shenanigans rather than a serious, deep storyline. Heck, with Gary Busey peddling your product, you have to have some amount of humor. Right?

No Saints Row 2 for you until October 14th

We have sad, sad news for all fanboys who are lil' gang members in training. THQ just announced that Saints Row 2, which was originally set for release on August 26th, has been delayed until October. October 14th to be exact. THQ cited "marketing issues" and overall "product quality" as reasons for the delay, saying that Saints Row 2 "is done" and that now "it's about polish." Humph ...

Polish is always good and we'd rather take a two month delay then see a Saints Row sequel that plays like utter crud. But saying that that doesn't mean we have to be cheery about it. So, our official stance on the delay is anti-cheery acceptance.

Gary Busey returns for more Saints Row 2 vids

You may recall Gary Busey's Saint's Row 2 videos from earlier this month. They are, to say the least, insane. That is to say that Gary Busey is insane, but that's okay. It works for him, makes him money. What we're getting at here is that Uncle Gary is back with more Saints Row 2 videos, and he's as crazy as ever. We know the purpose of these videos is to advertise Saints Row 2, but we just can't get over Gary. Frankly, "People don't like getting shot in the face" may be the best line we've ever heard. Find another video featuring Tulsa's insane favorite son after the break.

The tools of Saints Row 2 destruction

Thanks to Uncle Gary, we already have had a chance to preview some of Saints Row 2's arsenal of weapons, but nothing too in depth. Now, thanks to IGN, we have been graced with a rather extensive list of Saints Row 2 weaponry brought to you by helpful folks at ULTOR. You have your standard Annihilator rocket launcher, AS14 Hammer machine gun and stun gun, but also included in the mix are more interesting tools of destruction like a chainsaw and a (very hot) flamethrower. Make the jump to get all the deets and view a preview of the weapons and vehicles you'll encounter in the vid embedded after the break. Dual wielding shock paddles FTW!

First look at THQ's thuggish Saints Row 2

IGN has the first look scoop on THQ and Volition's gangster sequel Saints Row 2 and all things said, we think the game has some healthy potential.

It's obvious that developer Volition took the criticisms of Saints Row and were determined to fix everything possible. For the sequel, they've revamped the game's look, bumped up the amount of dialog, added all kinds of new rides and added the ability to fully "trick out" your character with customization options. You'll not only be able to change your thug's appearance, but you'll even get to change the way he walks and celebrates. Also, your "crib" can be customized to your liking as well. Saints Row 2 sounds to be carrying its own attitude (car bombs FTW!) and its own brand of sandbox style fun, but we cannot help but fear that GTAIV's massive wake will all but drown out any anticipation for Volition's baby. But THQ is confident that it can hold its own, so we'll just have to wait and see if it's a fresh enough experience to pull us away from Liberty City and into Stillwater.

Red Faction III announced by THQ

The first Red Faction was one of the few FPS games last generation that was console-exclusive to PS2. This was made even more interesting by the fact that the game was well-known for its physics and destructible environs. The sequel saw release on all of the last gen systems, and the third game looks to be on the way to 360 and the PS3. Announced last week, Red Faction III is being developed by Volition Inc, (the developers of the first games, as well as Saints Row) and published by THQ.

Not much is known about the title at this time. Whether the story will be continued, how current-gen tech will be utilized, etc, is all up in the air. Though we were teased with the idea that the tech will allow for "More exciting destruction technology," the only other real facts taken from the announcement were the news that the game is running (albeit in early form) and that THQ's target release date is April of 2009.

Saints Row goes off-Broadway

Sure, Saints Row is full of thugged out gangsta' pimps, but it's full of something else, too: bugs. Cabel, a man known for his DS review videos, has put together something very special to commemorate these bugs. Along with a friend, he's put together a musical, Buggy Saints Row. Well, it's really more like three vignettes, but it's still funny. With songs like "Where's my F*cking Car," you really can't miss. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the softer side of Saints Row.

Follow the "read" link for Cabel's thoughts and a higher quality video.

Santa's Row: reindeer up, ho ho hos down

Just to put everyone in the holiday spirit, Volition has rolled out some new content for Saints Row. Download the "Ho Ho Ho Pack" from Marketplace for access to a brand new Santa suit. We suggest you reenact the movie Bad Santa to your heart's content. Have your character drink himself silly, mistreat a few prostitutes, and go on a shooting spree. Is there any better way to spread holiday cheer? We submit that there is not. Merry Christmas, everyone!*

Saints Row: Pimps up, patch down

Despite widespread reports that a release was imminent, the long-awaited Saints Row patch is still a no-show as of 4am October 31 and -- as you might expect -- the pimps are getting restless. Do you think trying to issue an update in the same window as the Fall Feature-for-All might have been a bad idea?

Saints Row Updated

People have been complaining about Saints Row multiplayer for a long time. Good news, it may be time to fire up Saints Row again, as Volition has finally released a patch. The patch fixes and updates a number of both single player and multiplayer issues. It does enough things that we won't bother to list them all here. Besides, we're pretty sure that most of you just want to know if the lag has been fixed. Supposedly, the patch will help out in the lag department, though we are unable to confirm this. Anybody out there gotten the patch yet? Are things running more smoothly? Leave some comments and let fellow thugz know what's up.

Saints Row demo joins the XBLM gang

If your world view is obstructed by the rock under which you live, you may not have noticed that a demo for Saints Row has hit Marketplace. Go get it and tell us what you think.

On a side note, posts might be a little wonky for a while, as technical difficulties (my Evil Office Webfilter ®) prevent more timely posts. Please bear with us as we get back up to speed. Of course, if you don't live in America, the posts might actually be more timely.

Anywho, grab the Saints Row demo and tell us how Krunk it is.

Down under Saints Row playtest

Our Aussie friends at My360.com.au got a chance to playtest a near final build of Saints Row. In short, it sounds like great fun.

"Gamers will be pleased to know that Saints Row, from what we saw from the preview code, is far from a GTA-clone. It offers so much more in terms of customization and interaction that it really makes a run for the best GTA-type game out there, considering GTA is pretty much a genre in itself."

Some of the high points:
  • Solid controls
  • Lots of side missions (insurance fraud? Sweet!)
  • Create-a-gangster and ride pimping
  • No loading times
  • Lots of multiplayer modes
The multiplayer modes in particular sound very cool. Big Ass Chains mode has players killing each other and then stealing the bling off of the bodies. Take the bling to a jewelry store, fence it, and get money. The first team to a certain score is the winner. But the best of all modes has to be Protect the Pimp. I'll leave it to you to figure out the objective, but this is the important part: the pimp is controllable and has the "Bitch Slap" ability, which is a one hit kill. That's got to be the best idea ever.
