The somewhat controversially priced Halo 3 themed Xbox 360 was pegged for a September release back during E3 and today Microsoft made its release official announcing that the console will be available at retailers this Sunday, September 16th. True, Gamestop already had the September 16th release date posted on their pre-order page, but now it's official and when things get officialized it's our duty to inform the masses. Full press release after the break. For those of you who are intrigued by the prospect of owning a Halo 3 themed 360 on September 16th and aren't sure what the difference between it and the other console versions, then keep on reading. The Halo 3 Xbox 360 will be priced at $399 in the US and include a special green Halo 3 paint job, green wireless controller, green wired headset, green play and charge kit, 20GB HDD, HDMI port, and a set of exclusive Halo 3 downloads including gamer pictures and a theme. Again, we pose the question to you; is the extra $50 over the Premium 360 worth the new paint job, downloads and play and charge kit? If your answer is yes, then quit waiting and get your pre-order on before Sunday rolls around.
The battle may not begin until Sept. 25, but "Halo" fans can prepare for the epic fight with the release the Xbox 360 Halo 3 Special Edition Console on Sept. 16 for an estimated retail price of $399.99 (U.S.).
Frags will be even sweeter with the Xbox 360 Halo 3 Special Edition Console, which features an authentic Spartan green and gold finish and comes with matching Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, Xbox 360 20GB Hard Drive, Xbox 360 Headset, Xbox 360 Play & Charge Kit, and exclusive Halo 3 Gamer Pics and Theme available via Xbox LIVE® download.
Xbox 360 Halo 3 Special Edition Console will be available for a limited time and presale demand has been incredible. True Spartans shouldn't wait to get their consoles.
The Xbox 360 Halo 3 Special Edition Console will be the perfect addition to any "Halo" fan's arsenal and pairs perfectly the recently released Xbox 360 Limited Edition Halo 3 Wireless Controllers and Xbox 360 Limited Edition Halo 3 Wireless Headset.
Created by legendary developer Bungie Studios and exclusive to the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system, "Halo 3" will set a new standard for interactive storytelling and social gaming by engaging consumers worldwide in Master Chief's epic battle to save humankind. In November 2004, the world's view of video games changed forever with the release of "Halo 2," which generated a record-setting $125 million (U.S.) in sales within the first 24 hours and changed the way people think about interactive entertainment. Three years later, it remains the most-played game on Microsoft's Xbox LIVE® online gaming and entertainment network, with nearly 1 billion hours of online gaming logged to date.

If they really wanted to sell these things, they’d have made it $459 and bundled it with a standard edition copy of Halo 3 inside. How many people would have bought one just to be able to play Halo 3 8 days early?

VERY TRUE !!
That would be a great marketing strategy... People would be throwin cash everywhere for Halo 3 themed consoles...
Thing that pissess me off though is that Microsoft is making nooooo attempt to create a massive awesome Xbox 360 mother-system...
I would pay TOP DOLLAR for a 120GB, 1080P, HD-DVD playing, HDMI outputted, Xbox 3-6-Muthafuckin Zero !!
Why NOT ?!?!?!? They'd sell tons of them guaranteed... Especially to the market of gamers that are worried about quality and features more then price...
WTF... Seriously...

The Elite 360 already does all of the above, save for the HD-DVD playback (which can be added with the external drive).
