The latest issue of EGM contains quite a spread on Silent Hill V, and the contents have begun popping up on the internet courtesy of SilentHill5.net. First and foremost, we know a little more about the game's story. The story centers around one Alex Shepard, a 22 year-old war vet. The game begins as Alex wakes up in a VA hospital where he was undergoing treatment for a near fatal wound (Jacob's Ladder, anyone?). In the hospital, Alex has a premonition that his younger brother is in danger. Like any good brother, Alex rushes home to Shepards Glen, only to find that his mother is catatonic, his father and brother are gone, and that the New England town is covered in fog. As Silent Hill fans could probably guess, things are about to get weird.
The Collective, the developers taking the reins from the previous Silent Hill team, promise new gameplay elements, new characters and environments, and epic boss battles (which are largely missing from the series). The game will employ the Havok physics engine to create movable objects that affect gameplay. For example, if you bump into a chair, it might bump into something else, creating a noise that alerts enemies to your presence. There are plenty of new psycho-sexual monsters to test your sanity as well (note the freakish nightmare pictured above. Also of interest, The Collective have opted to make the transition between the normal world and evil world occur in real time. The decision, apparently, was inspired by the recent film adaptation of Silent Hill. All in all, it sounds like the game is on the right track. 1. All of this sounds perfect, Richard! I'm a big Silent Hill fan, and I loved the movie's use of real-time Darkness shifting (Good enough term, I guess?). I was really hoping we saw a Silent Hill game evolution like this...yay!
