Halo 3 MP Vidoc Impressions
Wow. After watching today's ViDoc about Halo 3 Multiplayer, that's all we can muster to say. Despite only being Alpha footage, it looks to be very promising, and they showed us some never-before-seen weapons, arenas, and features. The most recognizable of which, is the bubble shield from the "Starry Night" ad back in December. Also shown is a trip mine, in this case, as a last ditch attempt at revenge for becoming roadkill via an oncoming Warthog. More analysis ensues after the break. But for now, we've got the video embedded for your viewing pleasure.
The feature that shown in the latter moments of the ViDoc was the replay videos, allowing you to pause, detach the camera, slow down, and scrutinize your gameplay. The could work as a means to analyze both your tactics as well your opponents, or just to gloat about the headshot or death from above you dealt upon your prey. Either way, it looks like it will change the way people learn from their mistakes, as they can examine the movements of those who get the better of them. It also opens the door for machinima to be taken to heights in terms of production values, should the feature be fully fleshed out.
So, what of the X button? Frankie hinted at it being featured in the video, and considering how it's been described as changing the way Halo is played, it could be either. On the one hand, the trip mines and bubble shields need a means to be deployed on the controller, and they're sure to add a new dynamic to gameplay, such as throwing down the bubble should someone get the jump on you. On the other hand, you've got a means to watch both what you did right, and what you did wrong in a match, and will help you improve your gameplay in the future, also drastically changing the playing field. So, X could be used for either, or perhaps both. During a match one could hit X to place their mines, while after a match could use it to download or record their game for further review. So, what do you think of these new aspects of Halo 3, and how the X button fits into it?

(Page 1)2. The X button is "deploy equipment". Frankie already mentioned this in the bungie.net forums.

3. I don't think the X button is the bubble grenade because you can see it as a pick up on the level when they are talking about the Assualt rifle.

4. "Bubble Shield and Tripmine are just two of the X-Button Equipment deployments. They are not grenades." - Frankie on GAF
At :43 into the video you'll also see a player use an airlift that he threw down. Frankie has confirmed that this is another X-button deployment.
There you go.
Additionally, the videos are recorded for every match. You don't have to press anything to turn it on. At the end of the match you will have the option to view and save the footage.
Again... there you go.

5. I think clearly the X button is not the Bubble Shield but the Recording and Playback feature. We already knew about the Bubble Shield. Although I do think this is the first time they have mentioned the trip mine...ought to be fun. Can't wait.

7. Not so sure about the trip mines and the bubble shields on the X button. When watching the video, my first reaction was that they would be mapped to the right bumper some how.

8. digitalain:
The right bumper is to reload your primary weapon. It has been 100% confirmed that the Bubble Shield and other equipment will be deployed using the X-Button. Bottom line.

12. It's the record mode thing they speak about at the end of the video, I think. The use items (shields, frags) are just normal equipped things as always.

14. For those still doubting that the x button is "deploy equipment", here's a link http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=10495722&postRepeater1-p=2 Look at the post from Frankie. If you don't know who Frankie is, he's one of the developers for Halo 3 and writes the weekly update for Bungie. There is no more speculation necessary, as has been stated, it has been 100% confirmed.

15. LOVE ME SOME HALO

16. man, this is gonna suck!?. They'll put in man-cannons, and a week later no one[smart] will use them because it will be too easy for good ppl to snipe you dead.
it won't be fun for anyone who wants to be competetive, because we'll never be using the man-cannon, b/c anyone competetive will be practicing getting that easy kill.
~if its gonna be anywhere near reasonably easy to make that shot in the air, then BUNGIE aughta not even put in the cannons
^The man cannons will be snobbed and completely ignored in ranked games.

18. FORTUNE[teller], you make a good point, that was my first thought as well. Although I could see it put to good use if you're carrying a Rocket Launcher or are certain that the Sniper Rifle isn't in play (by the other team)

19. The recorder is going to be something you ues out side of game play in lobbies. I couldn't see it being uesing inside game play.
c.c
They have also already annoced the replay featcher also, and gave prety good detailes about it. so it's not that big of a surpris to me.
It's the shield and trip mine that's what the X butten is for, and is big news.
