Update: Bungie's Frank O'Connor, under his NeoGAF alias, Stinkles, has debunked part of this rumor (twice). According to Frankie, Brutes will not be playable characters. The video may still come to pass, though. We'll just have to wait and see.
We get tips from time to time, some of them small and some of them big. The tip we received this morning, however, is a doozy. Coming from the blog of YLA G -- creator of the kickass Google application, GooMGC -- the info goes something like this: Brutes will be playable in Halo 3. Not only that, but a video confirming this fact should hit Marketplace on December 20th (I knew Bungie wouldn't forget my birthday). The video is supposedly seven minutes long and gives us backstory on the Brutes and tells us what skills they will have at their disposal. Even better, 2 and a half minutes of the video should be actual gameplay. This is strictly a rumor at this point, as the article has no source listed, but it wouldn't surprise us if it's true. In fact, it makes perfect sense considering how many new Brute weapons have been announced for Halo 3.
Playable Brutes opens up many questions of course. Will they have berserker attacks? Will they still have their dome protecting, headshot deflecting skull caps? Will Brutes be in the beta? Does this mean that Elites are no longer playable? Oh the possibilities. Assuming this is true, what do you want to see from the Brute class?
[Thanks, lollersticks]

The weapon additions don't have a direct relationship to whether brutes are playable. If you kill a brute, you're likely to be able to get his weapon...thus the announcements about the new weapons. I wouldn't read into that too much.
Brutes could certainly be playable as they are more the focus now that they've taken the place of the Elites in the hierarchy of the Covenant. But maybe "playable" is only in multiplayer?

Brutes suck. I don't want to play as a Brute. Lamest of all the Covenant races if you ask me. I don't want to play as a gorilla in Halo 3 or in any game for that matter.

NOOOOOOO!! This is getting ridiculous. I had been hoping the Brutes would be killed off by Halo 3. This is absurd though. Not only do I not want to play as a brute, but I don't want to see others playing as brutes. There's several options here. If it's for single player than you're either playing as the enemy or as a *friendly* brute. I don't want another tale of how a covenant soldier learned the truth and blah blah blah. if it's multiplayer than you either have altered gameplay mechanics to compensate for their strentgh, size, and lack of shields or they play exactly the same; to which i ask "why, then?" whats gonna happen when you customize your brutes color? have some fuzzy pink and green apes runnin around? WEAK

Nothing's wrong with playing Brutes. I would be very disappointed if they removed Elites...I like them better than Spartans. Humans are over-rated ;)
AVP2 pulled off the 3-species thing very well, so I'd imagine that Bungie could do the same. Granted, Aliens and Predators are a bit more interesting than Brutes and Elites, but Bungie will figure it out.
This time, they just need to differentiate the 3 more so they have strengths and weaknesses that even the 3 races out. It could work, but people fear change.
stop it! LOL

Bungie said in their Weekly Update in Mid-November:
Shortly after the commercial airs, we'll be treating our fans to the next installment in our "making of" documentary series on Xbox Live Marketplace. This next "VIDOC" is going to give some new insights into elements of the campaign and will peel back the curtain on a certain prominent character in Halo 3. We'll talk more about this in the coming weeks.
It looks like this rumor may have some weight after all!

I'd personally rather keep an even playing field rather than incorporate classes. I don't have any problems with brutes being a skin like elites were in Halo 2 but I really don't like the idea of strengths and weaknesses, at least not for Halo. It leaves an open forum for bitching and complaining that one class is better than another for some cheesy reason. It's not broken so no need to try to fix it. Just my humble opinion.

If Halo 3 has a class system, I'm not buying it. Why has the halo franchise turned into some dumbed down CTF game??? First vehicles now (maybe) classes? I just want a good ol fashioned deathmatch in an indoor level without vehicles- halo 1 style. For the love of god, bring back Chill Out and the Magnum!
PS: Does anyone actually enjoy oddball??? What about Phantom Team Covenant Sniper Sword Mulitball Clusterfuck???

footlong,
Sorry, it was the M6D pistol. And vehicles were only in two of the multiplayer maps for halo CE (which we never played) while Halo 2 has a lot of maps that were designed around vehicles. For me, Halo 2 was a departure from the way I played halo CE. We played straight up deathmatch which was based solely on skill, not vehicle whoring and weapon whoring. I am just hoping that Halo 3 doesn't continue this trend, but from what I am seeing it looks like I will be disappointed again. That Halo 3 map where you assault the bunker is exactly what I don't want to be doing in Halo. I did that in RTCW on the beach.

I liked storming the bunker on the beach on RTCW. That was one of my favorite early xbox games. I think Halo 2 was more even, between vehicle maps and non-vehicle maps. I think there were nore non-vehicle maps than maps with vehicles..
