Rumor: GTA IV to be in New York City?

While we're going to categorize this as a rumor until we get a better insight upon the release of the trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV on the 29th, it definitely is worth consideration. Apparently, word on the street is that GTA IV will be taking place in New York City and have NYC stylized music. When we first got wind of this, the first thing that popped into our heads was, "Uh, wasn't the Liberty City from Grand Theft Auto I, GTA III, San Andreas, and Liberty City Stories supposed to be at the very least an homage to New York City (with a hint of New Jersey)?"

If you look at the map for Liberty City from GTA I (pictured above), it's even more apparent. Or this could be a completely new direction for Rockstar, where instead of doing fictional places that are inspired by real world locations, they cut the middle man as it were, and just use the actual city. Either way, we could see a return to Liberty City, or Rockstar's rendition of the real life counter part. Which would you rather play in?

1. Well, Liberty City was a form of NYC, San Andreas was California, and Vice City was Florida. I'd love a new version, a next-gen version of NYC if it looked like the video of 'The Getaway' shown at E3 for PS3 awhile back. Rememeber that stuff?

They shouldn't waste that graphical ability on PS3 OR Getaway :)

2. If they do it PGR3 style and make it so you can actually recognize everything, that would be pretty badass. If it's going to just be Liberty City with a Statue of Liberty thrown in and Madison Square Gardens, then it probably isn't necessary.

3. The most disappointing part of games that take place in New York City is when the city itself looks generic in the game and landmarks are squished into a small area so you can tell it's NY. Best example - Spider-Man games ... totally disappointing. I don't care how far he can leap, Spider-Man can't make it to the Statue of Liberty from any point on either the New York or Jersey waterfronts.

If they feel they can really make the city personalized enough to pass as "real" New York, then that's awesome. Otherwise, I'll settle for a Liberty City-style NY knockoff.

4. Well, if it has NYC music, the soundtrack is going to blow big time seeing there are no viable rock stations in NY since 92.3 (Stern's former home) when to an all talk format.

5. @4

Vice City and San Andreas were imprints of GTA3.

6. The cities of the latest GTA games come from the cities of the original games. I read this on a fan site before San Andreas came out.

The latest city is a European city. I forgot which one, but I think it was in Italy.

7. My guess is London - remember GTA London?
We've already had all the major places in America, and it would be just rubbish if they used the same style of city as what was already done in GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas.

My guess is London, or somewhere that's not in America (maybe an LEDC like in Mexico, Africa or South America?)

8. There's more major areas in America than what they've done thus far. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Chicago, but I doubt it'd happen. I think that Mafia game already did it anyway.

9. By the way, if you counted GTA London, Liberty City Stories and Vice City stories we'd be at about GTA9...

Posted at 5:48PM on Mar 13th 2007 by Ciaran Gallagher

10. I'd want it to be in Liberty City. I like the whole style GTA has of making cities rather than basing them on the 100% actual real life city.

11. Forget NYC, I'd like to see GTA IV set in Boise

12. Amsterdam. Just think about what the average person knows about Amsterdam: pot and prostitutes. Not a shocking addition to the GTA series, but imagine the storylines...

14. i just hope it has some kind of form of nyc witch the main character as Tony

15. I say why stop at any single city, or country for that matter? The degree that San Andreas grew from Vice City was huge. Who's to say they don't expand to the entire globe, or further! Spore style!

16. To me the only American city that would be a viable spoof after everything thus far would be a washington d.c. spoof. GTA:Capital City or perhaps GTA Beltway City. To me a D.C. clone holds alot of potential promise. Think about how that the secret service could be a "gang" of sorts. Or running and gunning thru a spoof Lincoln memorial, How cool would that be?

Going with a direct NYC setting just doesnt seem very "Rockstar" to me . Since tons of GTA clones have taken place in new york L.A. and london that doesnt seem too edgy or original. And plus all those games have terrible "Uncanny Valley" moments where they seem to try either too hard to be real or not hard enough to "BE" whatever city there are trying to be. If it was just liberty city again im sure we would all be fine with that but for me capitol city would rawk!

17. Whatever they do, I don't care. I just want to know why it's GTA4? We're on GTA6 by my count.

Posted at 8:25PM on Mar 13th 2007 by Gemini Ace

18. I doubt they'll ever do a real city. They're in enough hot water as it is, and I sort of doubt they'd want to attract the ire of a city's government if they ever did a direct translation.

If it's a fake city they can have fake billboards, fake cop logo, fake license plates. But if it were a real city, they'd have to get permission for all of that.

Do you really think the NYPD would appreciate a game as high profile as GTA4 having cops with real NYPD logos on them getting mowed down by 14 year old boys?

I really doubt it.

19. how the city of gangsters, ATTTLLLANNNTA. Althought the only real reason i say that is cause i live there and its kinda funny if i were to see it, althought it wouldnt seem very interesting unless they added somehting in a knock off version of the city

Posted at 9:43PM on Mar 13th 2007 by zourskittles

20. Tony, i'll personally kill a man in order to see a gta game based in a chicago knock-off. it would make my day. but they'd probably make fun of it so much that i'd just hate the franchise after that.

yeah i call total bs on this one. it would kill the whole gta spirit. next they'd have to oust cluckin' bell and bring in taco bell. that just wouldn't be fun.

agdTinMan is right. new york city officials would be pissed with all the controversy, even if it didn't do the city a disservice.

the only viable options in the country, imo, would be chicago (though most probably would think too similar to ny. wrong!), atlanta (though highly unlikely), or dc. i really can't think of any other city with enough characteristics to make the cut. if i had to place bets, i would go with tokyo. london actually seems more plausible, even sydney possibly, but i'm going with the former.
