We have no idea what to think about Def Jam: Icon. On one hand, it has some interesting, new dynamics for a fighting game. On the other, it doesn't seem to come together as solidly as a good fighting game should. The graphics are nice and the sound is bangin', but something is missing. Read on for our impressions of the demo.
The pace of the game is slow, especially so for a fighting game. Honestly, the pacing is more suited to a wrestling game. The DJ controls are interesting and let you do extra damage, but that doesn't make up for the otherwise awkward controls. Why anyone would use the D-pad in a fighting game for something other than movement is beyond us (it activates takedowns during grapples). One last gripe, there isn't any decisive way to tell who is winning the fight. Yes, if you're doing well, your song will play in the background, but there's really no way to tell if you're close to winning or not. Honestly, we're still not sure if we're winning the fight or if the demo time is just running out. Maybe that's the most discouraging part about the demo, nothing really feels concrete. Apart from the DJ controls, we never really felt like we were skillfully winning the fight. It just feels like button mashing (with a few right stick moves thrown in for good measure). This feeling is doubled without a recognizable life bar or at least a stamina bar.
One thing is clear, this game is aimed at hip-hop fans, not fighting fans. If you like fighting games, you might pick this up for a few minutes to mess around with some of its more novel concepts, but you'll probably end up going back to something better (Street Fighter II, for example). Hip-hop fans may get more enjoyment out of it thanks to the storyline and bling bling of it all. Without seeing the full game, Icon is okay, but it's not great. Bottom line: rent before you buy.

Make no mistake about it though, this will sell buttloads! So, a ton sales doesn't necessarily mean a good game and the same goes for movies. That's where Stomp The Yard comes to mind. It made a ton of money, but what a god aweful movie... (2.0 on iMDB)
The majority is not always right.

Uh, aren't the Def Jam series of games technically WRESTLING games? I know the first two were. That makes this quote a bit silly.

Johnny,
Believe me, the first time I wrote this post, it was very negative. After thinking about it though, I decided the game isn't *terrible* it's just not great. It has some interesting concepts and if the story mode is any good it might at least be worth a playthrough. I don't think it's a game anyone will play for a long time, but it's not awful.
I'm honestly torn. That's why I wrote that.
And, for the record, I like hip-hop, just not mainstream hip-hop.

Maybe they were, but this one isn't. At least if it is, it's not a good one.

The first two were built by Aki, who also developed the original WCW games for N64. This is developed by EA Chicago, makers of the pretty yet mostly hollow Fight Night Round 3.

Modeps: thanks for confirming my suspicion... because this game basically felt like fight night.
and like fight night, I have nothing nice to say about the demo. One game, and it was a case of "GET OFF MY HARDDRIVE!!!!" poorly animated, slow paced, and just plain boring. additionally... I'm not that wild about the graphics... or more accurately the graphical style. the game looks nice... sorta... but what is with the white-wash? everything just looked bleached, and just... ugly.
If the demo is of any indication, I think we're looking at another paltry effort from EA

I was extremely disappointed… They’ve totally ruined the franchise by making a game with a weak character line-up (compared to the predecessors) of almost no long-time artists, repetitive fighting and unresponsive controls.
The fight becomes a mayhem of the same few moves (and the right stick moves with really unpredictable effects) and getting up from random explosions or being kicked across the whole environment.
The demo is also very annoying. The timer goes down way too fast, and when it does, you have to sit through the lengthy loading screens again.
At least the graphics and environments are cool, even though th environments are too small, explodes for no reason and lacks interactive audience.
I loved the XBox demo for Vendetta II, but it seems to me like EA has ruined a franchise.

Wow. Even after reading these comments I was expecting to like it.
No dice. This game just doesn't have it going and the developers have to know it, unless there's something we're not being told. (Is a really old version of the gameplay? It can't be. Are these low-level characters that you can level up?)
I don't even know that it's worth a rental. For the record, though, I love Fight Night Round 3.

i really DONT understand, why all of the HATE? seriously though, the first time i played this demo it brought a smile to my face, it was fun.. i must be the only one who thinks so as well. i mean you cant take as a serious game, and you have to admit that the music backgrounds is a new touch.. and who needs the life bar.. they have visual and audio cues, hence if your covered in blood, the dj says times almost up and the enviroment gets over exposure then u know the match is at its end.. iono maybe its just me but to cause alot of destruction just by waving ur fist at ur enemy is realy cool.. BUT U HAVE TOO LOOK AT IT AS WHAT IT REALLY IS, i mean its got cool music it doesnt take much to play.. its a nice pop a game in and relax to it kind of game, no stressing out try'n to get to the final boss try'n to get all head shots and what not.. jus pop in lis'n to music and bust some heads.. lol I think everybodys over looking it, or it jus had to much hype or something,
also the graphics are pretty nice, and the overall presentation of it is really nice, plus the story be hind it looks promising, if its anythign like the last two the story will be awesome...
also for the people who think its not like the last 2 titles. i thought its game speed and the way characters attacked each other was exactly what the last two played out..
oh and another fav. is when u slam your opponent on ur tv screen, thats cool.
i'd like to see hi-dynamic destructive enviroments in a serious fighter next, like doa serious.. that would be nice....

That's true with every EA release. They leave something out until the sequel arrives.

Well Richard, I think you are missing the point of this game completely. Def Jam has never been a all out fighting game like Street Fighter or Dead or Alive. If you remember, Def Jam Vendetta was mostly just a hip hop wrestling game from the get-go. Both of Icon prequels were great games and sold well, not only to hip hop fans, but generally to people who got tired of games like WWF and Raw. This is a game all of its own so you cant pull points from it just because it isnt as much of a fighting game as you would like it to be. Seriously, street Fighter is exactly what you mentioned, a button mashing game. Def Jam is aimed to the more slower paced think before you act system. You are right when you say that the contols are slow and that is definitly something Def Jam lacks in. But it looks very good and I have to say I had a hell of alot of fun playing it. Thats all that matters. So if you like a game with great visuals, fun enviorments and like things alittle slower paced than SF or DoD, this is sure to be a good match for you.

Aragorn I do agree with you to a certain extent. EA hasnt come out with anything original since....well....forever? But I will disagree with you saying that Def Jam looks sorta good. It looks great. No offense at all when I say this but I think most of you have whats called "Gears of War Graphics Syndrome". Thats when the first time you saw Gears of War in game, you all of the suddenly realised that all other games that dont come to par with it look like crap. Def Jam looks awesome, as did Fight Night. But seriously, if these games are so ugly, let me know what your playing.Sure, there are better looking games. Mass Effect for instance. But I will cut EA some slack because this game looks, plays and is better than that stupid Madden franchise. Thank God thats dead. I will also cut them some slack for C&C 3 because that game looks amazing.
