For some of us, we've experienced a bricked Xbox 360 and had to call the semi-helpful customer support people. During launch Microsoft kindly shipped out a box, paid for shipping both ways, and were cheerful if you had a defective 360. All was right in the universe. But now you have to supply the box and pay for the shipping ... dirty devils. The creator of the Big Box Project has a similar story, he too had a broken 360 and wasn't happy about having to pay for the box and shipping. So, he decided to turn the tables on Microsoft. Customer service promised that they'd use the exact same box sent to them to ship back a fixed Xbox 360. Now he is raising money to send his 360 (and possibly others) in a ginormous container so Microsoft has to pay big bucks to get it back to him. You know, shipping freight size containers costs lots of cash. And we ask, what's your opinion on this little project? Is his plan going to work, should Microsoft use the same crate sent to them, or is this one big money making hoax? Vent, discuss, and speak your mind.
[Thanks, dpcough]

I'm guessing Microsoft will just take the Xbox out of the shipping container and put it in a normal box to send it back.

If you complain enough to Microsoft, they'll send you a shipping box. This guy is an idiot.

I have been waiting since DEC 3RD/07 for them to send me a box. I also have an extended warranty. went through about 20 supervisors and support people...wrote letters to department heads, and finally got sick of waiting and sent it in myself. They said the order kept resetting on Canadian orders and didn't know how to fix it?? Now, what I find interesting is this - I was out and out lied to several times - given dates that a box was shipped, yet when I called back an hour later, someone else tells me there is a problem and the box hasn't been shipped. The lies came from supervisors personally guaranteeing they will make sure the problem is fixed. Never got done. I just hope I get a fixed one returned.

I'm all for any events that are exploiting poor customer service/satisfaction. I was one of the many lucky people who purchased the holiday 360 bundle and received a faulty copy of GRAW. Which I may add no one seems to be talking about. It isn't even on the Ubisoft support section. So Ive been waiting for my working copy since just after boxing day, no sign of it. Sent in a comment to Ubisoft about this and got the typical robot response "Please allow 4-6 weeks...". Hearing what I have heard about how many XBoxs seem to become faulty I am becoming concerned about not purchasing the in store warranty at Future Shop where I made my purchase...

FYI... I pre-ordered my 360 from Circuit City (yeah, I was one of the lucky ones that actually was able to check out while the site was crashing that fateful day)and therefore got one of the first run boxes. Up until a couple of weeks ago, my 360 worked like a champ. Nothing weird, no overheating, just pure gaming bliss. Long story short, I got the RROD (red ring of death) 2 weeks ago. I called 18004MYXBOX, they said my console was covered under warranty and shipped me a box and UPS label to send out my Xbox, free of charge. Keep in mind, I've had my console since Nov. 2005. That makes it approximately a year and 2 months old. Great news, right? Well, it gets better, because they sent me a brand new unit the day they received it. 3 day shipping, both ways, and a one day turn around at Microsoft means I got a brand new console one week after I got their empty box in the mail (about 3 days after I called them). Now that's customer service. The best part is, I got the quieter DVD drive as well as an added bonus. THANK YOU MICROSOFT!!!

Microsoft refuses delivery and the guy is held responsible for the return freight as well.

MS XBX Customer Service sucks. That little firm in Texas is full of idiots. Trust me, I know. To tell you the truth, even if he does send the big box to Texas with his XBOX 360; those idiots will not find the console for months.

Mine died on me two days ago. I spoke with the customer service with very little complaining, and they are sending a box for me and paying shipping both ways. I believe it’s the nature of the defect that determines if they will pay for the packaging/shipping costs.
I see why people would complain for having to foot the shipping bill. Years back my PS2 died on me and I went to Sony for repair and had to drop about 40 bucks in packing and shipping to get the beast there and back (plus the actual repair).

Its a funny idea, but there are two things that bug me:
1 - Microsoft can probably find a much cheaper way to ship the crate. They could probably just get a truck to drive it somewhere for much cheaper then it cost this guy to send it.
2 - The money raised to ship this crate could be put to much better use. Give it to a charity or something.

H3RP35, your story of getting a brand new 360 from M$ service and repair makes me want to shoot you in the face! ;-)
I'm on my fourth refurbed console from 'service' and each one I've gotten from them has had a manufacture date no newer then 11/2005...f'ing BS. I'm so pissed off with service right now I'm about to have a coronary. I'm the kinda obsessed game whore any console maker wants to have at launch. I bought my 360 at launch, I've bought 16 full-retail games, 15-20 arcade titles, craploads of themes/gamerpics, HD-DVD player, Vision cam, wireless headset, and faceplates. What does this loyalty get me? Customer Service ball deep in my hind quarters.
I called service mid-December for getting codes to re-associate all my marketplace content to my latest console so family members could again play the full versions of arcade games under their gamertags. I was told 3-5 days and they'll have a code. Right. After FIVE calls and SIX WEEKS of the run around I finally got my codes. WTF is up with that?
I also had issues with the wireless headset buzzing and dropping out as you've read about in the past. Even in Major Nelsons podcast he said if you're having issues, call up support and they'll get you taken care of...right. First time I called which was right about Xmas time they told me it was out of warranty. Um, ITS ONLY BEEN OUT A MONTH! After I got that through their head they told me they where sending me a box to return mine in and shipping out a new one. I was foolish enough to believe that. After 12 days I called back and was told thats not how it works, it'd been nice to be told the process the first time I called. Now I've shipped my headset away and I have ZERO confidence I'll ever see it again.

My story is similar to H3RP35's. I too had a launch day 360 and had no problems. Suddenly the video went weird on me (not a cable problem and no r.o.d) I called them up on Dec. 28 and they sent me a box and of course they paid for shipping both ways. Because of the holidays, the box took almost a week to get here, but once I sent it in the turn around was quick. Within a week they sent me a brand new Xbox (dated Dec. 27). I don't understand why so many people say they have to pay for shipping or provide a box. I didn't complain, speak with a supervisor or anything. Yet, I experience great customer service.

@7 and @13.
Wow, there seems to be a common theme here. I also had a Day 1 Xbox 360 (manufacture date Oct 2005) that recently died with the dreaded 3 red rings. I called 1 800 4MY XBOX, actually had a pretty good customer experience with them and was told I was covered under warranty. I had the box within 3 days and sent it back the this past Friday.
I'm patiently waiting for the return of my Xbox, or a refurbished one, or a new one, I don't care as long as it works. But while many people have horror stories about calling Customer Service, I didn't have any problems.
While I can understand people may be angry if their Xbox dies, but if you treat the person on the phone with respect and just follow their instructions, it is a very simple phone call and process. I had no issues whatsoever and I feel bad for those who had a bad experience. But I have to give it up for Microsoft for realizing the manufacturing problems that they hand and CHANGING their policy so that people can enjoy their system.

I sent a broken 360 back to MS back in may (i got the red ring o death)shipping was free but it took 2 weeks to get it back. The one they sent me works but the lights are wonky they switch from vertical to horizontal at will. I called customer service and they were no help. So I figured it was too minor to wait another 2 weeks for and kept it. Now its REALLY irritating me and they wanna charge me for shipping.does anyone know a quick fix for this light issue?

I think you guys are missing the point who say the "PS2 cost more to fix so this MUST BE A BARGAIN!!!" or "shippings not that much".
The 360 has been out for a little over a year now, NO consumer electronic that you paid $400 for should crap out that soon.
Microsoft is a multi-billion dollar corporation, and they can more than afford to pay for their mistakes.
If people just start accepting as consoles shitting out as the norm, no ones going to bother to do serious testing before they push these things out the door.... kinda like what microsoft did to keep the lead they needed so badly to be a competitor in this round of the console wars. So, they cut corners and they should pay.
I don't think trying to hold a corporation responsible for their actions is all that crazy, and coming up with a creative way to do it is all the better. This sits in the same boat as the guy who sent the court summons to Dells kiosk, instead of corporate.
