With Warhammer: Battle March just released on Xbox 360, it's time for a new Warhammer rumor to start circulating. The rumor in question is that an unnamed developer is currently hard at work on a Warhammer 40K third-person shooter by the name of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine. It's not really a rumor so much at this point, as the video embedded after the break pretty much confirms it. The only question is who is developing the game. Joystiq has contacted THQ, the license holder of the Warhammer 40K name. We'll be sure to post any revelations they receive.
The Warhammer 40K universe is really perfect for this kind of game, and the video footage shows real promise. We're digging the "up close and personal" nature of the game, as well as the Gears of War-esque finishing moves. Check out the (very lengthy) video after the break. Oh, and be sure to take note of the Xbox 360 logo at the beginning.
Looks horrible! Reminds me of Double Dribble for the NES--every time you're about to do something cool the camera angle shifts and your stuck in a retarded cinematic. Boo.
I really do hope that developers stop using marketing words like cinemaction. Hardcore gamers think it's stupid and casual gamers will never hear it, so who is it for? As for the game, it looks as if Gears of War was turned into a brawler instead of a shooter. I'm interested, it has nice lighting.
I actually think it looks very cool graphically, though the 1 vs 100 type of gameplay doesn't strike me as particularly faithful to the WH40k universe.
I can understand what they're trying to do with "cinemaction" (cough...), but they better disable the direction inputs while those scenes kick in, as that type of sudden camera change can be really disorienting.
I'll second the request for a modern Space Hulk. I played the heck out of the 3DO version.
"that chaos space marine is basically my equal"
....... 1 vs 3 while the 3 isn't enough to be the one....? why is that? why is there a 1 in the equation in the first place? there's no reason this dude should be alone
"the traitor guard is shooting from a distance cause he's smart"
.......then why is he incapable of hitting is target or moving away when the guy with the chainsaw gets close?
I think this game COULD have potential if it wasn't (What so many others have said) 1 vs all. It would be neat to interact/use some of the more popular Marine vehicles, if even for just one level. All in all it looks like a GoW clone set in the 40k universe... And at the helm? And Ultramarine... sheesh... Hopefully you won't be stuck playing a single marine chapter... But it's early in development, and hopefully will embrace more options. I definitely agree though; from what I've played of 40k tabletop and video games a single marine isn't going to do much against a tide of chaos.... just sayin.
I think that they are on the right track with what they have shown so far and I am really interested in where this could go. I think that if you are allowed to use different types of weapons both melee and ranged then the avenues of gameplay open to the gamer could be alot of fun. I mean who wouldn't want to tear into some enemies with a melta gun or lightning claws. And before everyone tears into it, remember that this is the first build and we're not supposed to be able to see it yet.
It really hard to tell what this is really going to be like.
When I use to play 40k in my young teens (12 years ago). I use to think how cool would it be if they made this in to a computer game.
I always pictured it being on a big battlefield, not like a RTS but 3rd person veiw.
Seeing this it dosn't live upto what I thought. But this could be a opening story that guy has to get back to the tactical squad and then the game shows its true potential.
If it is a great hit you could expect more 40k games and story lines.
It's got potential. I'm definitely not a fan of the "cinemaction" sequences. I think they really break the gameplay in a bad way. I think it will be really disorienting and distracting if they are going to have over a hundred different finishing moves while battling.
The "Overkill" combat looked pretty awesome though. I can see that they really want to take the battle to a face-to-face perspective which I think is pretty cool and something no one's really done yet in a shooter. The environments looked nice as well.
Also, high powered gun + chainsaw sword = Marcus Fenix. Seriously, tape those two things together and you have the gun from Gears.
Except said "High Power Gun" (Boltgun, which really shouldn't be fireable 1-handed normally) and Chainsword has been around for some 30+ years while said Gears of War gun has been around for what, just a few?
Yeah I'm not sure what to make of this, the background stuff looks pretty cool (from what i could make out from the nasty-ass youtube encode), but the combat looked a bit haggard and I really don't think I could be bothered with having to finish everyone off, even after sticking a chainsword through their torso, or even exploding a grenade in their face, seriously, they're dead, they're not going to be getting up again. The running looks a bit dodgy and the voice acting sounds a bit weak. Also if the guy needs to shoot his gun to light up the area so you can see it, maybe it's a little too dark. Also considering he's touting it as a fast paced game, where you go into the cut scenes then jump out into action again, it feels really slow and disorientating.
As has been said, but repartition is fun, the cut scenes need to either disappear or be a much more smooth transition, it's far too jarring at the moment.
There does sound like there could be the potential for fighting some bigger monsters (bloodthirster perhaps?), but who knows.
Final thought, dispense with the lame names for everything. Orchestrating your ballet of death... what on earth where they thinking, it really doesn't sound cool.
Looks kind of cool but it needs a lot of work. I agree that 1 vs. 1000 isn't true to Warhammer 40K. 40K is about massive armies made up of numerous squads tearing each other to pieces for every last inch of territory.
I remember Space Hulk, but I played the Playstation version, it was cool but hard. The controls were very complicated and going solo was a recipe for death. Sweet Tyranid death.

They should just make an updated version of Space Hulk. I had it for the 3DO, and barring the shitty hit detection, it was a badass game!

Chain Sword and Bolter is probably where the idea of Fenix's gun came from.

But yeah as has been said many times, first build so it could change lots. I like the idea of melta gun and lightning claws, they make me think fondly of playing space hulk (not that I was any good at it). They world of Warhammer is so immense that if done right this could be a cool game, but there definately needs to be some improvements and squad based stuff. It'd also be nice to see some cover (is that too cliché now?) as the kinda running around whilst getting shot at trying to get close to people doesn't really appeal to me.
As has been said, but repartition is fun, the cut scenes need to either disappear or be a much more smooth transition, it's far too jarring at the moment.
