Heavy Weapon drops a bomb on XBLA

Heavy Weapon, the side scrolling, blast-tastic shooter, is now available for download on Xbox Live Arcade. Another throwback arcade shooter, Heavy Weapon places a, ahem, heavy emphasis on shooting everything that moves. The XBLA version is enhanced over its PC counterpart (which you can try here) in that it allows for up to four players to play simultaneously and includes a new co-op mode. Everyone likes co-op. If you're stuck at work or otherwise indisposed, we've downloaded the game and will post our impressions later today. In the meantime, you can try out the stripped down web version for free.

If you can, try out the XBLA version and tell us what you think.

3. thanks for the link to the pc version, I can safely say to hell with work today!

4. Wow. Even better than the online version. I like the upgrade system. Playing online is hectic and mad fun. 4 tanks vs. a never ending stream of enemies is awesome. Definitely worth the 800 points. Best XBLA game ever. Gonna spend a lot of sleepless nights playing this sucker.

5. I like it but not enough to buy it. It's a solid game with nice art, but I'm saving my money for Worms.

6. Me likey :)

7. So far its pretty fun... but not as good as Assault Heroes. I'll have to give co-op a shot.

8. What am I missing? I would think that the Live community would get tired of these kinds of games after a short time. Particularly at these prices. I love Geometry Wars, but...I'm tired of these games with poor designs (as in hack and slash). There is some slight learning process of how to use your character efficiently and effectively, but after that it's just ... doing it again and again. They have all these other really neat categories on the dashboard for things like board games and strategy...how about using them? Is no onse else getting tired of these games? The above commenters have mostly liked the game, so I dunno. What am I missing?

9. I completely agree with scotious that XBLA needs more diversity. Hearts and Spades were great options, but how about more Yahoo! Games like titles. Games that really take advantage of multiplayer connectivity.

Maybe the problem is the community overall disinterest in innovative titles like Roboblitz?

10. when the hell is worms dropping?

Posted at 12:06PM on Jan 17th 2007 by polly

11. Maybe people would be interested in Roboblitz if it didn't suck.

12. This game is kinda like Assault Heroes meets Geometry Wars - gameplay is simple and repetitive, but for some reason still fun.

I wasn't going to get this, until I realized the co-op mode is 4 player. My roommates and I love the 4-player co-op games...

Oh, and the megalaser is a huge ego-trip.

13. I agree with scotius on this one.

Personally, I think Pop Cap games blows, man. I don't consider these "arcade" games on any level. These games feel cheap, elementary, incredibly unoriginal, and basically a waste of time.

Case in point: Heavy Weapon is available for play through Pop Cap's website, and the PC version requires the use of the LEFT MOUSE button ONLY. That's it. A one button "clicker".

There is no learning curve, there is no challenge, there is no reward, there is no progress. It's just a pretty arrangement of sprites, but essentially it's a simple button clicker. Nothing more.

I wanted to say it's a straight rip off of Metal Slug from SNK, but I don't think these guys even know what that game is.

XBLA needs to bring over some classics, or original titles, not this trash.

14. I played the pc version trial and was not impressed at all. I got bored after 2 minutes. Not even gonna bother with the XBLA version. Where is worms already?

And yeah what is the deal with the strategy and board games? I want to see scrrable on XBLA. Now thats a game I will surly buy
