Xboxic has a detailed post on Microsoft's response to Xbox 360 firmware modders that I won't attempt to explain in full. Supposedly, MS is now banning users with the easily detected hack. No surprise there, unless you don't happen to have hacked firmware and get the axe anyway.
MS banning firmware modders?

MAC addresses travel on layer 2 only, they won't make it on the internet. Unless the Xbox specifically reports them; which is possible since it scans the hardware anyway.

Sounds very bogus to me. I am sure this will happen soon- but you would hear a much louder wimper on the web about this.
My view is that as long as there is no cheating on live, mod away. I buy my games. Mods have killed Halo 2 online. Such a shame.
Msoft should just make all new boxes have locked down firmware and move on.

How could they detect it? From my understanding, the drive just reports that the disc is correct when asked to check, so the box just has to trust that the drive isn't lying, because the only thing that could know is the drive itself... Unless they can read some info about the firmware itself... but a good firmware hacker could rig that too, i feel like...

I agree... BRICK THEM. None of you are making "backups" to "protect your investment" and you know it.

MAC addresses ARE globally unique, barring address cloning (and you can always unclone).
And I say, ban them all.

Man, I hate the cynisism of a lot of people. Some people, like myself, would actually like the option of making backups of our games, so we dont run the risk of damaging the originals! I've already had a couple of games die due to the 360 falling on its side during play, and it wasnt pretty, not to the wallet, either, I might add. I back up most of my DVDs for fear of having them scratched, or just generally suffer wear and tear to the point where they're unusable.
Ever since I've softmodded my xbox 1, I've not downloaded/copied/stolen one single game - yes, I use it to run backups, but that's exactly what they are, BACKUPS.
It just makes me go, when people think the worst of other people, the cynicists.

Also, I was just considering having the firmware-modding chip installed into my 360 this week... Guess I'll have to wait and see how this story turns out before I do...
