PSU info emerges

The opening of the official English Phantasy Star Universe website managed to get lost in the shuffle last week, and for that we apologize. As punishment for our tardiness, upper management has released the weasels. Believe me, the weasels ... they are merciless. Putting our freshly lacerated fingers back on the keyboard, we found that the site has lots of info for fans of the series. It's unfortunate that all of the available media on the site (apart from the above shot) more or less completely fail to display the game's lush environments -- a Sonic Team trademark. There is however, a plethora of information about all aspects of the game (except monthly fees or a lack thereof), much more than can be listed here. Some things to look for:
  • Weapon customization and crafting
  • Each player gets a personal room that also serves as a shop for others
  • Each race and their abilities
  • Mission system explanation
  • Info on new lobbies
  • Info on both multiplayer and single player games
  • Vehicles
  • The battle system
  • A spiffy, though tiny, video (in English, no less)
  • Lots, lots more
Any Phantasy Star Online fan worth his or her salt owes it to him or herself to check it out. The game is scheduled to hit American shores on October 24th (Europe on November 24th) so, you'll have plenty of time to soak it all in. Is anybody else crazy excited for this?

Excited? Of course. I love PSO, but I'm not too happy that there could be a fee... it better be reasonable... like $8 or $9 / month

They have a page setup where you can get your account subscription setup so you can play the game, but the page is meant for setup of Playstation 2 and PC owners specifically, not Xbox 360, they don't even mention the box. Maybe they'll handle the subscription through XBL and they dont need the extra facility like they do for PS2 and PC, or maybe, just mayber, there is some truth to those rumors afterall.

I could totally see it, PSO was originally a title free from monthy fees on the Dreamcast afterall. Perhaps it will have no fee on the Xbox 360, but they'll charge MS points for additional missions they will no doubt release.

Matthew,

I was trying to figure out how SEGA could make money off of PSU on 360 without a monthly fee. I completely forgot about Marketplace goodies! Here's hoping that's enough for SEGA to offer free play...

I really hope this game lives up to the regard that a lot of the series' fans holds for it. I, for one, would love this game to live a long and fruitful life on the Xbox 360, as I will be definately investing a lot of time in it.

Despite this, I can't ignore the fact that the extra fee is very likely hurt the game's community - especially if the 360 community is seperate from the PS2/PC's as it has been in past incarnations. Many, many people are already dissatisfied with the fact that they have to pay additional money on top of what they pay Microsoft, and if FFXI is to be any indication - as it's the only pay-to-play game on the 360 at the moment - then this game might just flop.

I thought FFXI was a flop on the 360 too...until I saw MajorNelson's latest live numbers and FFXI was in the top 10 list "based on World Wide Unique Users on Xbox Live." (It was #10.)

I dunno what kinda numbers that means, but it beat PGR3 and DOA4...and I assume those numbers take into account all the people logged into live but playing single player.

So, maybe FFXI apparently has a solid core following on the 360. News to me.

I have to say, I'm pretty much on the fence with PSU, and a monthly fee would pretty much make me fall off altogether. if this was a port of city of heroes/villians, or WoW for 360, then I'd have no problem with a fee.

Honestly, I have actually never played an MMORPG and I hunger to, which is pretty much the only reason I have any interest in the game at all (I however, am not going to touch the single player, AT.ALL). But I'm gonna need an awful lot of convincing before I do get the game. if it turns out that's it's your basica hack n's slash... or worse... turn based online rpg, I'm out. even moreso, if there's a fee... well...

I'm under the impression that this is gonna be a very rushed title.... released multiplatform with a single player component, and an mmorpg... from sega? they've been smoking rocks since the second gen dreamcast titles, and it's really going to take a lot to get me back to the Sega camp.

as far as the fee goes... well... perhaps microsoft will help with the costs... as it is the first mmorpg offering for the 360, and it'd be nice if they established another genre to the wider console audience.

also, anyone remember this one?

You know I thought the 360 version wasn't an MMORPG, just an ORPG with probably lobbies that have lots of people in them, kinda like guild wars but on an even smaller scale. If so there should be 0 problem offering it with a free monthly fee and even if it is an MMORPG it should be free regardless. Bandwith/fiber is cheap and so is maintaining servers. I know first hand considering it's part of my job. As consumers we are getting royally screwed on what we pay for broadband (which isn't true broadband anyway) and MMO makers are forging gold out of thin air.

Anticrawl,

You're correct. If the previous installments of PSO are anything to go by, then PSU will be much closer to Diablo/Guild Wars than it is to WOW.

Frankly, that's what I've always liked about it. You don't have to devote hours and hours of your time to feel like you've accomplished anything. I seriously can't wait. Like, seriously. You guys will probably get sick of me posting about it.

"X360F announces that Richard Mitchell has reached level 100 in PSU" :)

BTW, would you recommend Guild Wars to someone who can't devote entire evenings to it?

With the aid of an expansion pack yes, I did enjoy my time in guild wars, though I never bought any of the expansions. More specifically about PSU is that it is 6 players online.

I'm interested in the idea of an MMO on the XBOX360, and the sci-fi setting appeals to me. I'm a graphics snob, however. I just can't justify paying a monthly fee to look at PS2 graphics on my Xbox360 or PC. If it were free to play online I'd consider it, but if it's an extra fee on top of the XBL fee then I'll just wait and check out Huxley.

WoW has already ruined my life anyways. I'm in recovery.

@aragorn - "I'm under the impression that this is gonna be a very rushed title.... " nope, they've been working on it for years now, and for the record, the previous entry in the PS series, PSO (first release in 99 I think?) was Sega's first MMORPG, so technically they've been in the market longer than most mmo devs, including Blizzard. Now, the 360 version obviously hasn't had as much development time as the PS2/PC versions; but then again, as transparent as porting between PC/360 is, it shouldn't be an issue.

@Richard - Guild Wars is the MMO for people with ADD, so yes :) I log in maybe once a month or so whenever I get that mmo urge, and it's great for satisfying that. And who can beat the price? $50 gets you the game and, well, no monthly fees :) I probably wouldn't play any mmo's at all if it weren't for that.

@AoE
Guildwars is the mmo with people who have real lives and have other things to do than spawn camp for magic pixies that appear only once a week, randomly.

Anyway I was pleased with the first PSO, boy I can still remember the first time I played that game on the dc... but I became unsatisfied with the games release for the gamecube, felt like it was a rehash with nothing new added... hopefullt PSU will be something great... I don't mind the monthly fee, if the game is good and kept fresh.

The game could be free if the use the market place to sublime the server costs... I read somewhere that each player has his/her own lobby and store... maybe they can sell stuff on market place to decorate them..

AOE - Just because a game has been in development for a few years, doesn't necissarily mean that it hasn't been rushed. This impression of mine has actually been based more on how much content SEGA is trying to cram into one disk. A single player, plus Online role playing game... for three platforms... simultaneously... and this factoring the potential for cross platforms (which i don't if they're doing that). that is a HUUUUGE undertaking... potentially crazy one. How many online roleplaying games do you know that have had a simulatenous multi platform release?

Also: "and for the record, the previous entry in the PS series, PSO (first release in 99 I think?) was Sega's first MMORPG, so technically they've been in the market longer than most mmo devs, including Blizzard."

Ummm... not sure why you decided to add that. and 'for the record' Blizzard is a relatively new mmorpg in the scheme of things. cuz you know... ultima online? Everquest?

@Aragorn, You make Good points, but I'd argue that there's still a good bet it's not rushed. Sure it's a huge undertaking, but it's safe to assume they weren't starting from scratch when they created PSU. PSO was previously ported to PS2 and PC, and the ammount of system-specific code required isn't nearly as monumental as you might think. Also, artists aren't coders; and since this game is a sequel and the visual style was set by the previous entry, I'd guess they spent most of the three years it's been cooking working on the content... Granted that's all wild guessing by a sega fanboy; but in all honesty Sonic Team is one of Sega's better development studios; if anyone at Sega can pull it off, they can.

I only mentioned Blizzard because, among my gamer-friends at least, they seem to be pretty popular... yes, I know that there are several mmos that predate PSO, but there are a greater number of mmos/mmo developers that came after Sega/PSO; my only point was that Sega's no noob to the mmo arena.
