In a surprisingly candid interview with MSNBC Don Mattrick (AKA the new Peter Moore) shared his heartfelt opinion that the Xbox 360 represented the best value of the three major consoles, saying, "On a price per value basis, I think we win ... relative to Sony and Nintendo." He elaborated that his "consumer instincts" told him that the Xbox offered "the best blend of performance, price, online and games - by far." He elaborated further that the Xbox is really starting to rack up hit games, saying, "If you look at our quality ratings, there [are] more 85-plus rated games on Xbox 360, by a long shot, when you compare it with PlayStation 3 and Wii." He then tossed a bone to GTAIV, noting that it could be a "Halo equivalent" when it releases next year. Finally, Mattrick said that the Xbox 360 should be able to compete with the PS3's vaunted ten year lifespan, concluding that Microsoft will push its "fundamentals" and "over-deliver value and satisfaction to consumers." In this world of public relations, spin, and press releases, it's really nice to see someone step up to the plate and tell it like it is. Hit the "read" link for the full interview, which also discusses Games for Windows, Xbox Live, and Mattrick's humble beginnings.

As I posted somewhere else, I agree whole-heartedly about the value. However, I think the only way the Xbox360 will garner a 10-year shelf-life is if its price drops significantly to account for the hardware incapabilities it lacks in comparison to the other system.
Disclaimer: I LOVE my 2-month old Xbox 360. I do think that the 360 is undeniably strong in the present but weaker in the future based only on hardware capabilities. Love the show!!!

And exactly how is it so inferior? Please give details, the only glaring inferiority is the standard DVD drive compared to Sony's Blue-Ray drive.

I, as I believe Mr. Mattrick, was referring to was the Arcade ($279)bundle. That lacks, of course the media (external HD-DVD drive now $129 at Toys R Us), storage (512MB mem card), and wireless capabilities (wireless attachment is still $99, $60-80 on ebay) of the PS3's current base version ($399 40 GB) that comes standard in the box.
Those are all hardware disadvantages facing the 360. Mind you, Microsoft's software has been superior. In 4 years, the PS3 and 360, I feel will become equal and toward the end of the lifecycle, the PS3 will show its superior hardware. That's all I'm saying.

I couldn't disagree more, when comparing the PS3 and the Xbox 360, you have to put the premium in the equation. The gimped arcade console is a joke and we all know that. It is more than unfair to put him against the PS3. With current compression rates and software development DVD-9 is great for gaming. I have no need to enter a format war without a clear winner in sight. Being a network admin, I cringe at the thought of gaming and streaming over Wi-Fi. I know I am in the minority but that is just me. The games look amazing now and will only get better in time. Microsoft has some fantastic development tools in place to keep the 360 viable. I will take my elite, with Live and the Marketplace 2, 5, or 10 years from now over the PS3. With horrible framerates and constant delays nothing on the PS3 hardware side seems "superior". We won't even start on the cell or the shared memory issues. What he was trying to say is the content on the Marketplace will keep the 360 fresh for a long long time.

I agree w/ Phocas, my comment was more on the graphics and processing power of the PS3 and 360, which I think has been proven that both have their advantages and disadvantages. I'd have to say that I'm not looking for a gaming console to be a media hub, the additional features that they both provide are nice but I don't need my console to be a storage device and PC. The storage on the 360 is mainly for games saves, music, and Arcade games I don't need TONs of space for these kind of things, 20GB will do just fine. To me, the main edge for Next Gen goes to the 360 not because of the console but because of the online community they've built with Live and the services that they are able to provide. Currently Sony's offering isn't close.

I never intended to discuss game distribution over the gaming networks. Not even a thought in my mind. Framerate issues and memory problems can be worked around via COD4, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, etc...
Even if adding the elite into the equation, it only adds a storage capability. I believe that to the average consumer, built-in wifi and a hd-movie player as a bonus feature, is pretty alluring.
My point is that developers, in time, always find ways to maximize hardware capability. The PS3 has greater hardware capability than the Xbox 360, right? I simply believe that developers will find directions to take the PS3 directions the 360 can't go.
Hey, I just invested in my 360 about 2 days before the 40GB PS3 hit stores. Do you know why? I like it. After playing it, I LOVE IT. I want it to remain the dominant American force it is. I just think that eventually the market share will become more evenly dispersed and our beloved system won't be able to produce similar game quality. Love it, hate it, it's just an opinion.
P.S.-How do you reply on these threads? I hate starting a new thread everytime I post a comment

Community? What a community of 12 years old bouncing about Cod4 like their are master chief and shouting at their mother in your ear, ya really great community, I prefer the community of adults that play in a civilized manner. Kinda like when I was playing halo with a group of friends and we deiced to be come an half ass clan, we had a bad game and lost by about 10 kills, then the other team proceed to tell me that we need to return the game cause we sucked, although I scored mvp for the game, ok some community, Anyone hear lessen to lex and terri in the morning? They play cod4 on the ps3 because adult Community. The xbox is gimped and will show in the 09 when the ps3 get better and better and the xbox cant keep up. FF13 anyone? Before anyone starts flaming me or labeling me as a fan boy, I own both systems and say it as I see it. Oh the best value things a joke.

The only thing gimped is the Playstation Network. You hear all these promises of grandeur with the PS3, 2009 , 2010.. Screw that. I game for now, and right now the PS3 is garbage.

Kinda funny cause I Game now too. On the psn with less lag and friendlier users unlike your self. There the only difference right now between live and psn is the ability to invite from game, but that will be handled with home, everything else works just fine and for free. Ass hat.
