We've just been informed that everyone's favorite space rock shooter
Asteroids will be making its way to the Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday, November 28th. For 400 Microsoft points (and available to all Xbox Live regions) gamers will not only be treated to old-school
Asteroids fun with re-worked HD graphics and purple backgrounds, but will also get to enjoy
Asteroids Deluxe at no additional cost. That's two similar games for the price of 400, which we must say isn't all that bad. This Wednesday asteroids will fall, space will be conquered and purple galaxies will remain ... purple.

According to Joystiq, both games are 400 points apiece, not for both. Hopefully you guys are right though.

@6: The original asteroids did not play like that. Moving the joystick left and right turned the ship, while pushing up fired the engines. Pushing down would warp you to a random spot on the screen. And of course, pushing the button would fire.

Great. While I tried my best to defend Minter and Space Giraffe in a lower post, i have to disagree with him when it comes to this kind of "shovelware". I think it's awesome. As a general rule, i think the more the merrier on XBLA. More new games, more old games, more more more. I'll even welcome more advert games as long as their free and un-shitty. And just adding the basics like Live multiplayer, achievements and leaderboards to these old games can really add the 5 dollars worth of value to these things (graphic updates don't do much for me but whatevs; as long as you can turn them off I'm cool with it.). We have a MAME cabinet at my office and it sucks because the high scores reset every time you switch ROMs.

This is set up like Centipede/Millipede was, essentially. So that's nice. I enjoyed that one despite seemingly no one else caring about it lol

LOL Will Jeff Minter complain about this game outselling Space Giraffe?

@9 Actually, the original arcade ateroids was all buttons but I don't see that carrying over to the 360 controller.

I know how asteroids plays, but I think the retro way should go ahead and play that way while the new one is really something a bit more updated in the gameplay/control department.

@13: I wasn't around when the original asteroids arcade game came out, only the 2600 version which I still love lots.
@14: I don't see how adding robotron 2084 controls to asteroids would make it better. It'd just be a lame copy of geometry wars then.

Probably will pick this up, since i always kind of liked Asteroids and the Deluxe update looks pretty fun, so I think 400 points is worth it.
