David Edery talks XBLA and its future

Longtime X3F reader, LunarDuality has posted an interview (also posted at XBLArcade) with David Edery, Worldwide Games Portfolio Planner for Xbox Live Arcade. The interview (part one in a series) focuses on the recent string of Live Arcade titles and the future of XBLA. Readers will recall that Live Arcade only recently began to deliver on the promise of a new game every week. Edery notes that this trend is likely to continue, with the double releases occurring "more often than not." He admits that it's possible we might see the occasional week with no release, though that possibility is "very remote." Edery also takes time to answer questions about Microsoft's portfolio strategy, the possibility of Xbox Live Arcade Unplugged Vol. 2, casual vs. hardcore, and many other topics. Hit the "read" link to check it out.

2. I'm curious as to whatever happened to Midway's presence on XBLA. It would be nice to have MK2 come around to play over live, instead of the craptastic net play on the PS3.

3. I really think the service has improved since it started. I remember those weeks chained together with basically nothing of note, only to then see a bunch of Namco retro ports (which are generally especially lazy -- at least Konami and Midway update them somehow).

I really can't complain about it anymore. Sure, I don't want something on it all of the time, but I don't think that's even really possible.

4. @2 - That's a very good question, actually.

5. @4 Where were you when I started a thread in the XBox forums? Maybe we'll get more announcements from Min-E3, from other publishers as well, but I'm going to be really disappointed if Midway is not longer publishing titles to XBLA. I personally like the retro releases and Midway has one of the best retro catalogs.

6. That is true...I am a longtime X3F reader. Since the inception really. Keep up the great work! And thanks for the link.

7. I'm hoping at the mini E3 that MS will introduce some sega arcade titles. It'll be nice to play VF or Daytona USA over live.

However, in regards to what's currently on there.. I'm far from disappointed. I find myself playing more games there than the retail versions. (Pacman CE, PoP, et al)

8. I like the sound of that 'Undertow' game.

And yes, the XBLA has improved bigtime over the last few months. Nowt to complain about these days!!

Thanks. Yeah...I've been creeping around working the angles. (^_^)

I'll hopefully have a bunch more interviews in the near future too.

Last I checked with Midway,
They claimed they were "researching" MK2 for the 360, that was over 2 months ago.
